    Awesome vid. I never thought of the difference between standing and sitting. I USED to only play standing . I was too fat to be comfortable sitting and playing. After losing 90 lbs, I love sitting and playing now. I’m going to really look at how high I keep the guitar now. Probably raise it more so I can do like ya said and keep the wrist straighter. Love the new guitar ya got. Hope ya are liking it. Thanks again for all ya do for us out here 😀

    Playing standing up tip one, raise your right foot up on a box or guitar stool and play like the classical players do, get away from using the left leg. It feels weird at first but you will get used to it, and it's closer to the standing position. That said also practice standing, some licks are just harder higher up the neck and also if you have to stretch, oh and play in front of a mirror.

    Your advice is so much better than the others. Explaining more of the "why" instead of just the "how" makes all the difference. Btw, Paul Guilbert's fingers are also ten feet long 🎸 👍

    I struggled playing standing up. I did one single thing that transformed my live gigs and it meant I could enjoy them and feel in control when playing. I simply shortened my strap length almost funk but not that bad. It was a game changer and I could look forward to playing standing up instead of dreading it because I didn't feel I had the same control as sitting down.

    Hi Carl, could you do a video on preparing to join a (rock) band as a guitarist? What things should we be able to play, with regards to both the bare minimum requirements as well as optional things that are beneficial?

    Props to Carl for being a pro and answering these very beginner level questions sincerely. I figured this out pretty much as soon as I started practicing standing up. No hate though, I have my own beginner level questions that others figure out on their own

    Thank you, Carl. started playin in 2012...no plans on gigging...so I've always sat when I play. However, you should be able to play standing up as well. It isn't easy for me, standing up obviously lol...all them yrs sitting....for me, you all can low sling all ya want...it is hell on the wrist...no way is ur wrist in proper position if you are playing low...I don't see how. If you have any desire to play live or jam with a band...you have to stand up...find what works for you and be kind to ur wrist lol. Great channel Carl...you are an inspiration.

    Great video! This was very helpful!
    But, one thing, that is pretty much a nit pick and not so important. What you mentioned about the fanned fret guitars... That's not really supposed to have an effect on your play style, but to change the scale length of the strings. Metal guitarists like to tune low, but still do a lot of shreddy stuff. To tune low, you need a longer scale length to support the proper tension of the string, but this also means that your higher strings are going to be really tight. So as a solution to this, you use a fanned fret, or multi scale length guitar. The lower strings will be longer nut to bridge so they are tighter, but the higher strings will be shorter so they will be looser and easier to bend.
    Anyways, you're an amazing teacher and have taught me and many others a lot of things, thanks man!

    Great video Carl. I just started playing guitar 1 and a half year ago. I always play my guitar in standing position and my guitar is just on my hips but the bad thing is i got injured my wrist until really hurt. But i saw Nuno Betterncourt the he play thats why i keep my guitar low. But anyway, to all out there, its totally different standing and sitting position.

    Thumb thing was incorrect generalisation. Thumb won't exclude scale choices (and played them successful) and are those pentatonic players only vibrato and (boomer) bending users to you. And barre chords is beneficial to play with thumb doing E and A and with that you can mix lead and rhythm efficiently.

    @9:17 fanned frets were not created because they keep your hand in a more comfortable position. They vary quite a bit themselves and have different neutral points. some people find them easier others hate them. The real purpose/ benefit is that they are multi scaled and allow for better tension on individual strings especially on lower tunings. Standard 6 strings don’t get a great deal of benefit but the difference on 7, 8+ etc is significant

    Most players want to look cool like Jimmy Page & Slash and have their Les Paul around their knees, not everyone can do that, although it helps to have long arms and fingers. Had a teacher years ago tell me if I want to play fast and accurately raise the the guitar higher, his example (& his hero) was Rik Emmett of Triumph who use to play with his guitar at belly height. I know it helped me out Big Time.

    I've been looking all over for a solution to this exact issue, and this was the only video I found, about the issue but also that had an explanation/solution to it. Thank you Carl for all your informative videos and also of course your lessons. I do have a question, however, although I doubt you will see it. When I try to play jump in the fire by Metallica I have this issue when reaching 4 frets on the low e string. Would the solution to that be to still raise the guitar higher? Because I'm all but injuring myself straining my wrist to reach (though I do probably go to far, even when it starts to hurt I keep on playing until I almost can't, physically)

      make sure ur guitar is high enough...that position you describe forces the pic at an angle, should be easier to slice thru the sting. Make sure ur using the tip if you want speed...a sharper pic help as well...the Jazz III comes to mind

    Been playing a few years seriously and practice a lot of alt picking. When standing and playing alt picking runs up and down the neck, the base of my thumb hurts like hellfire in a pretty short amount of time. I try not to "dig in", but if I don't I feel like I don't have any control.

  • @nutellaking734
    @nutellaking734 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Take guys like Synyster Gates for an example though, he kinda has his guitar really low but can shred and sweep like nobody's business. Of course getting the guitar up makes sense and works 100%, but what if you wanna play and look cool at the same time? I can play quite fast with the guitar at lower thigh height, also 3 NPS stuff, but sweeping is killing me because I cant reach the lowest note... any advice for that?

    • @royalcat10
      @royalcat10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, it's very common problem. Almost all the guitar heroes everyone knows plays with their guitar strap really low, so many newer guitarists feel as if that is just the way the guitar should be played. It's natural, and usually smart, to attempt to mimic people that are clearly very good. It just doesn't click for many people that it's a fashion-over-function type deal, wearing your guitar lower.
