2023 Mazda CX-50: Is It Still As Good As We Originally Thought?

- It is not often we get to revisit cars after we have sampled them once here on the channel. Let alone do we get to see them four separate times within a year. That is the case with this 2023 Mazda CX-50.
The CX-50 signals a new direction for the brand. Aiming to move more upscale, the CX-50 adds premium features without breaking the bank. The design of the CX-50 is also the language that will be used on other, forthcoming vehicles from the brand. We have already seen the next vehicle to be launched by Mazda, the CX-90, and there are familiar themes between these two.
Unlike the CX-90, the CX-50 is not currently slated to replace its single-digit counterpart the CX-5 (which we are driving this week, actually). Set to be sold alongside their best-selling vehicle, the CX-50 compliments the CX-5 with a little more rugged and aggressive style.
Getting behind the wheel of this CX-50 once more after seeing it last spring in Dallas for the first time, driving it last summer for a week, and off-road testing it last fall, the real last test we could think of was big-city traffic. This was our ride from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to our hotel for the 2023 Chicago Auto Show. Sitting in the driver's seat, I had to reorient myself to the feeling of closeness to both the dash and the rearview mirrors. I did not remember the mirrors being quite as close as when I sat down to drive this one. That feeling quickly became a non-issue as I quickly settled in for the 40-minute drive south.
I really like the powertrain in this. The 2.5L turbo makes the right amount of power for this crossover, and the six-speed transmission was quick to find the right gear, especially if I had Sport Mode engaged. Even with 40º temps in February, this Texas boy quickly shifted from using the heated seats to the ventilated option.
We only had a few days in this one, but it reminded us of everything we had come to love about it in all our previous outings. If we were in the market for a new crossover, this would definitely be on our shortlist.

Thanks. Appreciate your take on the Mazda CX-50. I bought mine (CX-50 GT Turbo in Canada) in October 2022 and I’ve really enjoyed driving it. Never had a single issue with it at all.
👍🏼
Same here! It really feels like a quality vehicle!
Great review. First time I've watched your channel and just subscribed.
Thank you!!!
I love my CX50!❤️
👍🏼
GREAT to "revisit" the testing---- I'd love to see it tested in DEEP wet snow on a NORMAL road for a bit-- not just a straight stretch of flat ground like some do... :) (that's what I'll have to deal with here some in the winter-- and they're giving a LOT more of for this year.)
I would LOVE to help you with that. We just took delivery on a 2024 model, but here in Texas, snow is hard to come by, especially in May... lol. We will gladly answer any other questions.
It's a touch screen when you're using apple carplay or Android auto.
👍🏼
I wish it had a hybrid system available
Same
hows the MPG combined??
This or outback?
For our use? This. But the outback is great too
Good looking vehicle, so-so review.

@@GTGarageTalk Nothing personal, and I’m not trying to be mean - I know that talking to a camera is not easy.
The bar on TH-cam is pretty high (Sarah ‘n’ Tuned for instance) and comprehensive reviews can be done within a fifteen minute time frame.
If you were to take it for a drive and put it through its paces a bit, your review may’ve felt more dynamic.
Keep it up!
Mazda CX50 Turbo or Buick Envision Avenir? (most dealers have just reduced the price by 5k on all Avenirs)
The Mazda feels more sporty, and the Buick feels more luxurious.
Curious. Did you decide? I drove both a couple weekends ago. The Buick was like driving a cloud. My old rear would probably appreciate the ride and seats in the Buick more, but the fun and hips (I'm a sucker for a car with hips) won out.
Hows the range on the car based on your experience? im seriously considering this car and wanna know how good it is with gas.
in our week with one here on our home turf, we observed 22.6 mpg over 400+ miles of testing. With its 15.9gallon/60liter fuel tank, that comes to about 360 miles of fuel range. EPA rates it at 23/29/25 (city/hwy/combined) so your results certainly could be better. Our testing time with them does include a lot of idling.

I've heard that a hybrid version is supposed to be coming out in 2024. That'll be much more fuel efficient. I have one and The fuel efficiency is the only thing I don't like so far.
@@Musicheadmantha Yea i got mine and the fuel efficiency is fine on long stretches of roads (27mpg) but in the city it’s atrocious (13mph). gonna get the hybrid the second it comes out.
@@danreal7275 I will be trading mine in for the hybrid when it comes out also.
Better without the hat dude.....
So I should ditch the hat in future videos?
