On a rainy day, Yoseob's voice is like a violin
"HIGHLIGHT" is a four-member male dance group, a very popular kpop group in Korea and Asia. Originally, they debuted as a 6-member dance group with a team called "BEAST" in 2009 and are active until 2017. And the contract with the existing agency was terminated, and the team name could not be used due to copyright issues, so the group name was changed to “HIGHLIGHT”. After that, two existing members left the team, and the remaining four members reunited after completing their military service. This group has a high level of both vocal and dance.

Wow thanks for reacting to their killing voice video! Yang Yoseop is their main singer, sang a LOT of OSTs, sang in a lot of singing variety shows, has his own solo career and does musical theater. He's a busy man haha. He was crowned 2nd longest running King of Masked Singer, 1st as an idol singer in the show with his 8th win streak! A vocal beast!
14:30 yes! On Rainy Days is originally their song when they were BEAST. It's a very popular song with a meme worthy (but amazing!) stage performance. Haize sang a cover of it for the Blue Birthday OST.

They have so many great songs, it's not a surprise they brought in over half of Cube's revenue until they left (at the end of 2016 indeed). I agree going independent was the best thing they could have ever done though it has had its own share of difficulties for not having a big label behind them for promoting etc. Though as they said themselves, they can do what they want and this freedom is what makes them thrive so much.
I have no idea what the deal they made with Cube was but they have the rights to sing their songs as Beast as much as they want (most of them after 2012 were written by Junhyung who left in 2019). They just can't use the name Beast when promoting.
Dujun used to be lead rapper, it's a shame they don't have much rap heavy songs since they became four members (Gikwang is really decent at rapping as well btw). He was a rapper and dancer for Gikwang when he was a solo artist under the stage name AJ back in 2009 before Beast was created together with Yoseop and Junhyung.
The one you don't know much about (Yoseop) is indeed their main vocal, he's basically the equivalent of a cheat code for singing there's no style he can't do.
The song they just released, Daydream, is really nice as well hope you'll have a chance to listen to it.

I guess the deal is that they can sing their old stuff but half of the money goes to cube, and like you said no ownership of their former name and music. It's Cube so I doubt they budged much.
Yeah, I heard about him being AJ before on their Amazing Saturday episode :) Yeah, I usually don't use "Swear words?" But Cube has been shit for a long time now...Beast, 4Minute, CLC, G-Idle :( I always find it funny when people says that SM is the worst lol When there's companies like Cube, TS Ent, MBK and so on
@@Soshiworld0805 Yoseop has done some acting as well indeed, but he's also done a lot of OSTs and featuring and has been a musical actor for 10ish years now so could be where you've seen his name.
AJ era is cringe history for Gikwang but nobody is letting it die and it comes up almost every time they go on entertainment programs it's the funniest thing. They've always been no nonsense so super close to a lot of groups regardless of labels but since becoming self owned I think it's had a lot of impact on their place in the kpop industry. They're one of the most if not the most neutral group when it comes to the politics of the music industry (unlike Shinwa or JYJ for instance who have SM baggage) so can appear in lots of entertainment programs without any issues. I hope more newer kpop fans can get around to enjoying them in the future.
The sad thing with Cube is that it was a good company when Hong PD was the decision maker but it went downhill when power struggles started around mid-2014 I'd say. I base this on the terrible scheduling of Beast's end of the year performances (esp the one where they were coming back from a Japanese tour and had to go on stage without any pre-checks, barely having enough time to get ready before the performance: th-cam.com/video/sSmq8NbSOnY/w-d-xo.html).

Yes, they seem to have been able to get not just away from Cube but keep their reputation mostly intact, so they can promote on shows :)

No, they don’t have a deal with Cube to sing Beast songs. Cube doesn’t own any Beast song: songs are the property of their writers. Beast songs in the first 2 years (including Fiction) were mainly written by Shinsadong Tiger; since Junhyung provided rap lyrics for them he gets a share of the songwriting credit. So when Highlight sings those Beast songs, royalties go to the writers, not Cube. From 2013 on, most Beast songs written by Junhyung and his songwriting partner Kim Tae-joo (The Good Life team). The other members have written other Beast songs as well. So they need not ask permission from or pay Cube: they own the songs they perform.
@@litozulueta6013 I am aware of the songwriting credits for their songs, I also happen to have a master's degree in intellectual property specialized in author's rights, not particularly for Korea but most countries have similar rules. IP rights touch on more than just who wrote the songs and while they could possibly cut Cube totally out with their claims they would probably have needed to go to the tribunal and considering they changed their group name because they wanted to come back quickly rather than fight with Cube, there's a very high chance they signed some type of contract with Cube for either one time payout or splitting of revenue. That would also be supported by the fact that as far as I know BEAST's channel is still managed by Cube.
Though they've never actually talked about it in anything that I've found so it's purely speculation anyway.
