I remember how I figured out where the save files were located, and i started making copies of my save file at various points during my 'leveling up' and then named them all after Rogue Squadron pilots. Then in my missions I would assign them to the other ships. Also if i died, I would copy my General Profile back into the game and keep going.
I love that there is an A-Wing for some reason, that the explosion is smaller than the Death Star, and that the guard dude in the tower is nonchalantly checking his smart phone as you come in to land.

Strange. I was sure I fought against those Tie Advance and there were 3 of them. Shielded and were a real pain in the ass with 6 minutes to reach the exhaust port and fire the proton torpedoes.
I remember challenging my friends to see who could get the farthest down the trench at top speed. That did involve fully charging the shields, setting them to double-front, then routing all the power to the engines. I've also wanted to legitimately use that last sentence somewhere for a while, now.
If you are like me and trying to do this level on the 1998 version, consider destroying the TIE Fighters, flying along the trench, far above it so you are out of range of the turrets, and once you are close to the exhaust port, swooping down and firing. The port is 40km from the nav buoy entrance, so when you are 35 or so km from the nav buoy, you should be able to fly down and fire if you have your shields fully charged. Its not guaranteed, but at least there's hope now, instead of rage quitting.

I remember playing this game on my 486DX. I had the floppy disk and CD-Rom version. It turned out that CD-ROM had me stuck on a level for a few weeks. When I played at the same point on the floppy disk, I passed it. Strange but true.
Actually, the CD version had a few redesigned/patched levels like C1M4 which was super hard when the game came out. In a later patch they toned it down a bit and let the Tie Bombers spawn at a slighlty greater distance so you had more time to intercept.
If you like this one, you should see the one posted in 2009 (a year earlier) by Naceo. Dude CRUISES THROUGH THE TRENCH with all power set to Engines...AMAZING!

I could never get pass the mission that was before this one, so I´ve never saw this until now ..., great memories playing x-wing and the original Doom on my IBM 486.

In the cut-scene where the ships pull into the Pyramid Temple, the guard manning the watchtower is seen doing what looks like an SMS text on his touchscreen to notify the High Command that Luke and Farlander's strike teams are accounted for.
I think the wildest thing about this mission is the game isn't gonna just guide you into the trench for that standard iconic transition sequence. You gotta do *ALL OF IT* yourself. You make your own path into it.
There was an editor for the DOS version that made it possible to increase the blaster fire rate...made it more screen accurate, and a lot more fun! Blaat Blaat Blaatat Blat! Xwings are cool.
I remember cheating this map through... run outside the trench at top speed (ships in the trench got a speed boost) and entering it only at the last moment to launch the missiles. Never got to complete it the "normal" way.
I used to fully charge my shields then transfer all my energy to my engines, then switch the graphics to the lowest settings and blast along the trench full speed!!! Far out i miss playing this game! I could have made a career out of it with the mount of time i played it!!
the only thing i never liked about the x-wing series was how slow the gameplay was. i know its a flight sim but the craft and gun fire was way too slow, still a great game. i just like the rogue squadron games fast paced, mix them both and you have the perfect game
There's an error there. The trench is not in the equator. The trench actually is in the upper hemisphere of the Death Star and the pilots flew towards the north pole of the station. 😅
First time I beat this mission I couldn't make it down the trench so instead I coasted high above the trench and once the exhaust port was in sight, I then entered the trench. Makes me wonder WHY they didn't do that in the movie once they figured out where the exhaust port was. Just form a conga line and each guy takes turns launching torpedos at the port hole.
Well, from a movie-making point of view, that wouldn't have been nearly as exciting lol! But I think it was either mentioned, or assumed, in the movie that the attacking ships were better shielded from the Death Star's defenses while in the trench. Flying high above the surface would expose them to far more defensive capabilities, and you'd have to believe that even the tractor beam could have been used to stop the attackers.
@qwester285 Acording to StarWars wiki those are R-22 spearhead fighters (wich would became the A-Wing RZ1 later) and there were 2 in the Battle of Yavin
I usually "cheat" and fly above the trench until I get closer and then drop in. In the movie, the whole trench part is neat, but you'd never run the op like that if you could avoid it. The attack on DS2 made more sense. Just nit-picking...love them both.
Why couldn't they just fly high above the surface until directly above the port, then dive vertically downwards and fire into the port? Why fly down the trench at all?

i think this is a latter version of the game when they released an easier version...I remember playing the first version which at the start you got 3 tie advanced fighters on your back which were so hard to destroy...and then you couldnt really navigate the trench you would get killed very fast...you had to lift the craft above it and descend at the last moment....this looks easy peasy...

So is this intended to be somewhat modernization of the original 1983 Wireframe Star Wars game? Because it is exactly that. I SERIOUSLY want to play this. I was the man on this game in my neighborhood back in the mid-eighties however, I haven't played it since then. I wonder how badly I would suck at it now LOL
It was far more involved than Star Wars Arcade. You have to actually fly the ship not just move the cursor. You have to manually role, monitor and re-route your shields, and power to different systems. It's an "X-Wing Simulator" is what it is. It's amazing!
I remember playing this as a kid and discovering that all the obstacles went away if you set graphics detail to the lowest setting xD
