Good thinking J Tac, nicely done. I am setting up an old radial arm saw from my father. These ideas are great! THX pw

Great idea & very nicely done! This is now on my to-do list for my next set of radial arm saw add-ons.

In time I'd like to do a 2.0 version. I want to get rid of the radial arm base by making a wall bracket for it to sit on instead. This means I can make the downdraft/dust catcher a bit larger!

I hope you do! I just bought a radial arm saw so need to set up dust collection

Very innovative concept. I have seen downdraft table tops in a multitude of applications, this is the first for RAS - and i have been doing a LOT of research into dust collection methodologies. Nice additional. Good for dust and hold down.
For the "holes not being used" - on the top of your base table, route shallow channels from your hole to the large opening. This will allow for a bit more airflow from the further holes on your spoil board/sacrificial top. Every little bit helps.

That’s a good idea. I think I may try that. Thanks for the comment.

That is an issue with most Radial Arm Saws- that is the base frame. I have a 10" Dewalt Radial Arm Saw from 1958 that I restored. The frame on mine is just a large steel square, so I imagine with each new generation, Dewalt change those frames. There are also several model types. I keep a dado stack on my RAS so I am not constantly changing out the tablesaw blade. Nice shop and great job!

Very nicely done! I'm in the planning stages of a new bench for my RAS, and I'd been trying to figure out better dust collection. This looks like it. Between a downdraft table and a catch-box behind the blade, it ought to catch pretty much everything that can be caught. Thanks for the video!

Building a RAS and miter station now. Will add the down draft DC system you made. Very nice!!
    Well done

love the concept..as i'm currently still building mine i think i'm going to try 3 slots maybe 3/8"...1 about 2" either side of the blade and one right under the blade..really enjoyed the video

      Thanks for the comment.
I think on my new table I might take this one step further and 3D print removable plates.
That way I could experiment with different grid patterns, holes and slots!

Thanks so much for this video, I watched it awhile ago, but finally did it today. I think it gets about 90% I will continue to fine tune it. Again thanks.

I'm so pleased that it helps! Have you also noticed that is sucks the work piece down, holding it in place a little?

J-Tac it actually holds paper quite firmly

I don’t understand all the bad press these saws get, all saws are dangerous and need respect but this is so versatile and easy when you understand it, you would be a fool not to use it. I think the table saw is far more dangerous.

Thanks.... It really threw a curve ball at me. I honestly couldn't remember what the base looked like.
I'm considering making a wall mount base for the saw giving more room for a bigger air box underneath.

I'd love to see how you are using the tracks and table setup for your saw. Looks interesting!

This is a good idea! Perhaps it would help to use some type of plastic grid instead of all the holes(?). I am thinking about the plastic grids you might see used as a light diffuser in a fluorescent light fixture or I have even seen something similar used as the overflow catch on a fountain drink dispensing machine. They are usually about 1/2” (11-12mm) thick and have a grid of squares about 3/8” (9mm). I think it could really help to catch more sawdust and the plastic wouldn’t harm the blade and could easily be replaced. But thanks for the proof of concept video! Now off to the shop to make it work on my RAS!

That's a great idea... Maybe something could be 3D printed. (I will look into that when my sacraficial top needs replacing!)

The mod is great, but let down when my shop vac gets more than 50% full... I have recently purchased a propper dust extractor and will be upgrading the whole shop system soon!

So did you finish that upgrade ? Id be mighty interested in how you went about that and your findings/advice upon usage. I just got the same 1251 secondhand so eager to learn from you. Also : how do you "tune" your table for flatness ? Thx
