  • In this video I make a custom dust collection setup for my Radial Arm Saw . I had a idea that will make using this saw for 90 deg cross cuts a pleasure to use with no dust making a mess of the shop or getting air born and messing up your lungs .
This is the best design I could think up to eliminate this huge dust making machine that I have
Please tell me what is the biggest mess maker in your shop ?

I just built something using your guidance but made the top out of clear acrylic so I could see if the sawdust was flowing freely and to catch any clogs in the system. Not perfect, especially when the blade is some distance from the fence, but it wicks much better that the home-brew version I had before. Thanks for the suggestion!!

Patrick's work shop I love RASs too. I like your dust collection design, it may be the best I've seen for cross-cuts, which is about 50% of what I use a RAS for, then 30% for ripping and the rest for miters and bevels. Is it easy to remove if you want to move the fence to the back to rip plywood? Without some sort of dust control RASs are the biggest pigs in the shop.

For a long time I used a radial arm saw for what most people use a table saw for. Now I have a table saw but still have the radial arm saw. Hope to get more use of the radial arm saw in my new shop I am building in the back yard. I also hope to use the same design you have for dust collection. Great job Patrick!! Love seeing Steve Carmichael's head spinning around :)

Just got a Craftsman 10" RAS at auction for $100 --- years ago my Dad bought a DeWalt RAS and it was a great saw for accurate cutting. We always had it at building sites. I really got used to it for quick and easy cross cuts, making identical length short pieces for various projects, etc. So when I get mine up to speed now, I think it will be my favorite tool also. I really like your dust collection idea - it is what I will need because I don't want a lot of dust in my shop.

Cool idea! Especially ducting the port at the top of the blade guard into the suction box. I'm probably going to borrow some of your ideas. Because I do a lot more than just crosscuts on my Radial Arm Saw (a Sears Craftsman from the mid-1970s) I will have to make adaptations. I need dust collection for rip cuts, miter cuts, shaping and jointing, and other operations. Your system is a good clean start for my ideas. Thanks!

I have had that same RAS since 1975. I just refurbished it and plan to build a new dust collector. Thanks for the ideas. I also make a lot of 45 deg. cuts so I'm trying some other tunnel configurations. BTW, this model qualifies for the $100 recall but NOT the upgraded parts. The 4 sealed bearings will determine when I scrap this for a new model (originals no longer available and substitutes are way too expensive).

I have an old Craftsman RAS. I found there was a safety recall available for the saw. It comes with a better blade guard which also changes the shop vac port to the rear of the guard. Check out www.radialarmsawrecall.com for more information.

Jesse Fast this saw dose have the recall but since it works so well and even if it didn't i wouldn't never give the carriage to them for the lousy 100 bucks they are offering

I found your site thanks to Frank Howarth. My favorite tool in the shop is my sliding miter saw.

Yeah! RAS owners of the world unite! Can I confess? I'm a little bit afraid of mine - how about a vid about tuning up your RAS? (Or did I miss that already.) Great vid mate, love your voice over work.
