- Massive rains from powerful Hurricane Helene left people stranded, without shelter and awaiting rescue Saturday, as the cleanup began from a tempest that killed at least 56 people, caused widespread destruction across the U.S. Southeast and left millions without power.
“I’ve never seen so many people homeless as what I have right now,” said Janalea England, of Steinhatchee, Florida, a small river town along the state’s rural Big Bend, as she turned her commercial fish market into a storm donation site for friends and neighbors, many of whom couldn’t get insurance on their homes.
Helene blew ashore in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane late Thursday with winds of 140 mph (225 kph).
From there, it quickly moved through Georgia, where Gov. Brian Kemp said Saturday that it “looks like a bomb went off” after viewing splintered homes and debris-covered highways from the air. Weakened, Helene then soaked the Carolinas and Tennessee with torrential rains, sending creeks and rivers over their banks and straining dams.

I went threw this in pa my basement was flooded. Worse part is that flood insurance takes for ever.
Most of these people don't have flood insurance. Flooding is not covered by homeowners insurance.

I was looking for property along the East Coast in 97, and I felt like Asheville, North Carolina was in the clouds, I guess my memory is playing tricks as I was surprised this area flooded Elevation 2133 ft
It was a beautiful drive.
Pity the people with winter coming on makes everything harder.
It's high elevation but the hills funnel the water down to the valleys below. On the map, those raging waters were just creeks.

+30 push hours since I got a message from my Mum in Asheville and that was, she lost power. UGh... this awful. At least my Sister was getting supplies just in case the night before...... So, between both of them, they are probably ok for a bit. But boy is this hard to take. Back when I was in the National Guard, I went off to do some flood relief stuff but that was nothing like this. But it did bring the best out of most. There are lots of good people in the US and it comes out when this sort of thing happens. I hope that is the case right now in Asheville....
One of my wife’s sisters lived in the mountains around Hendersonville, but passed away a few years ago. This would have been devastating to her. Her other sister lives farther north in North Carolina,..and lost her husband just last week to pancreatic cancer…..and now this. Her husbands family is trying to get to her, but is having difficulty arriving to help because of this devastation. Life can be almost unbearable at times…yet we go on, with God, one day at a time.

My cousin is in Asheville and I have been able to hear from her at all.
You may want to contact Crowdsource Rescue as they are conducted rescues and wellness checks in the area there. You can find the hotline on their website. It will be a while before any infrastructure is restored, help is there. Emergency services were concentrating on evacuating people and air lifting them to churches and schools.

But there are actually policies and practices we could do to "change the nature " and of both the intensity and frequency of these climate events, because we know with data and evidence, that the increase in temperatures making the water warmer, makes these storms more severe and last longer than previous storms and hurricanes. All of these people should invest in reducing the impacts of climate change - because this is happening because of human activity and the use of fossil fuels for energy. They should support renewable sources of energy and over time can reduce the severity and frequency of flooding, fires, and degradation of the natural world. It isn't just "all chance" but in our ability to change the behaviors and practices that make it worse.

Climate change WILL MAKE storms stronger and more frequent and the 'conservatives' in the southern bible belt just laughed at the climate science.
