Bloody hell I wished I had watched this video before. The connections on the connectors look like mouldy cheese, so I will re-crimp and see what haooens. Love the way big bad bob just rides across your grass lol !!

    Great video as ever!
I was having intermittent charging issues with my R80/7 1979. Gen charging light staying on. After an extensive process, checking alternator, regulator, etc.. I found the issue was poor connections on the starter relay and corroded wires. Cleaned everything up and put some new connectors on and so far all is working fine!

I thought I'd fixed charging issues once I cleaned up the corroded replay connections! But no, the problem is back. It's very intermittent.
Today charging gen light went out as revs went up as it should, but later on when I started the bike it wouldn't go out. I did notice that most of the relay wires and blue/blue wire that sits alongside relay are corroded when you cut back the plastic housing.
I wonder if this is causing issues?
I was told that the alternator needs an "excited charge" to start working properly. Maybe the corroded wires are affecting this.
Can a voltage drop cause alternator charging problems.?

love it! but I hate crimped terminal connectors... the achillies heel of the bike is that starter relay. I ordered some new parts from vehicle and wiring products to overhaul the lot in there. keep up the videos, very useful. pity Chris Harris is not doing so many now. Cheers James

Thanks for the comment. Yes I always enjoy Chris' videos. He's very knowledgeable and I have picked up some very useful tips from him. Unfortunately I think he has not been in the best of health, so here's hoping he returns to full health and starts making those videos again soon.

Thanks for the video. I have a doubt: Is the gas tank the same as the R80RT/R100RT with the rubber pads in each sides? I would like to change my R80RT to that's Bad Bob one's. Do you have FB account? Would like to follow you, please.

Some BMWs only turn over the engine when the clutch is pulled in. So before taking everything apart, try pulling in the clutch lever while turning the key. Although saying that my bike turned over without the clutch being pulled. maybe it was an electrical glitch.

Why is the starter motor bendix slippery? I have 4 of each times doing that.😊

Gotta love Bob's bike. I suppose those squarish additions on the tank side are extra fuel? How many extra gallons? Looks like an RT fairing with the side pockets removed. Any other cool mods?
    Thanks for the vid!

+Edward Jones Yep, the idea was to get some extra fuel capacity, but not as much as was hoped for, probably 2-3 litres. I recon there is an airlock.
Cool mods: he recons his best mod is the frame brace that runs at a slope from below the headstock on the front down tube to above the swing arm pivot on the rear frame loop (painted red) on either side of the frame. Recons it has worked wonders for the handling. He also likes his Harley turn out mufflers (not fitted when this vid was made), apparantly the engine breathes much better. Then there's also the home made rack and panniers.
      Glad you like the video.

+Moto Phoenix Guess I'll stick to putting a 5gal(19L) fuel cell on the rear seat, but I love the idea of tank saddle tanks!
Interesting about the frame supports, are they welded or bolted?
      Thanks.

Drilled tags welded to the frame and each brace is bolted to these.

When I turn the key on my bike, nothing happens at all. no lights, no starter, no nothing. No idea where to start looking as this is my first bike.

Hi, sorry to see your troubles. Okay first thing to check is the battery state of charge. If you can get hold of a volt meter that will read DC voltage and preferably has a 0-20 volts scale. Place the connections on each terminal (if the meter reads negative, swap the leads around) and note the reading. If you see between 12-13 volts, that is good. If you see less than 12 volts, then your battery will need attention, possibly charging. Assuming you can read 11+ volts, but there is no sign of life anywhere else in the system, then it is most likely you have a bad connection at one or other end of your battery leads. Start by removing the battery leads at the battery; neg first. Clean them up and then refit them; neg last. Try your switching again. If you don't have any luck after you have charged the battery and checked the battery connections, then I suggest you call a motorcycle electrician. Good luck.

@@motophoenix5951 I have a new battery, and using a 12v test light, I have verified that both leads make solid contact (pos to the charger and neg to the ground)

I also have traced a few leads on the wiring diagram and it still just looks like spaghetti

should probably also mention I have an '88 r100rt that's been sitting for about 10 years. Internals all look good, carbs were fairly clean, I just need to fix these electrical issues to get it running

It’s a testament to the superb design of the BMWs of this era, getting minimum sporadic maintenance. It sometimes gets washed, that’s usually when he thinks I will refuse to do a repair because it’s filthy. Nevertheless it has done 300000 miles on the original engine, which still runs sweet.

What the hell is going on here ? Nobody is meant to use these anymore. They should be stripped down, butchered, have cheap and nasty tat added, fitted with a useless seat, crappy paint job, useless headlight (preferably with an insulation tape cross on the lens). Then after this, the bike is virtually un-rideable. Only then, can you call it a "Cafe Racer" and try to sell it on ebay for around nine thousand pounds.
