We have an exterior storm door that we use. We’ve never used the solid door, actually.
I was worried about that and drafts.
Love the way a man cleans a shed, just enough no more. When I have cleaned a shed it every thing out, clean the whole shed that's spring cleaning!!!

We fenced a small section of our property and you aren’t kidding, it’s pricy. When my wife and I drive anywhere and see property with tons of nice fencing we often say “wow, that person is loaded!” 😂
...or you could say, "Wow, that person WAS loaded"!

Yep, fencing and feed - typically costs more the the purchase of the animals - but we all love those animals so we all are broke ranching / farmers!!! blessings n sunshine always!
I have watched you from the beginning in California I wish I was young again and could live your life I was raised on a farm here in west Virginia I enjoy you so much keep it up.
Great job on the cleanup space for your chic brooders..... Another great recycled project. Using your own sawdust is great too. And today you have a start on another bag. I'm so glad you saved the saw dust..I looked as you were showing your work on the lumber and I thought it would be like throwing away money , not to utilize that! You have a true homesteaders mind!
They are truly one of the best! And so kind.
The chickens and especially the chicks will get splinters in the lumber dust if they play or sleep.

I use a string and a couple nails that really makes it easy.

I raised chickens commercially and had number one flocks. I gave them vinegar and found that they did much better. Vinegar also tightens the gut and helps them to assimalate the food and get more out of their food. All the things you said are also true. If the chickens look like they might be getting sick give them vinegar and you will see the that they will soon be better.

You guys are a clear example of following through what your heart is telling you and seeing the results blossom right in front of your eyes, it's like you were made for handling everything that comes up there at the homestead, facing the challenges head on and doing what needs to be done like you have been doing it your whole life, like a boss, the examples you are showing your kids is going to carry them through the rest of their lives, it is a beautiful thing to see and I really want to thank you for sharing a glimpse of your lives. If that tree is alive now, it could hang up there for a couple of years without going rotten. Don't worry about that part of it. Clean off one side of the hanger then pull it sideways to the ground. A party to take that down sounds like a good reason for a BBQ to me. Good luck.

Get a large tarp and put under the log that will make saving all the sawdust much easier.
I was thinking the exact same thing! Watching him cut that log with sawdust flying everywhere, l was thinking 'how's he going to get all that up?' Don't wanna waste it! And l thought it would be much easier to use a tarp..
so lucky to have the trees to make the wood for your raised beds.

A lot of hatcheries actually put it in their chick care guide to add some ACV to the water as well!
colloidal silver water...that's a good all-round for animals, helps with everything and very easy to make...
If you put those bins up on a stand or shelf, you wouldn’t have to bend so much and you would have storage underneath the chicks and theoretically it would be warmer up higher. I have seen other homesteaders use the ACV in their animals water.( I think Justin Rhodes called it magic water). Your place is really taking shape.

I am always amazed that you can do that with a chainsaw. And the more often you do it, the better you're going to get. Practice DOES make perfect.
I just showed David how you made the garden bed boards, hint hint hint. We were at Lowes yesterday and saw the current prices for 2x10x16's and I honestly can't believe how they are charging that much for boards. I need 3 more beds for my garden and we have felled trees in the edge of our woodline. I refuse to spend that much for edges for beds. sheesh! How are people building all these new houses and who can afford them with the way things are looking in our near future?
Same thing for humans...ACV is a natural antibiotic, cleans the urinary tract.

Fun fact: The odd layout of the pedestrian paths in the old yard at Harvard University came about by observing the natural paths of travel of the earliest students at the University and constructing the walkways accordingly.

You need to add a mule to the homestead with some old time logging tackle. That would be perfect to pull a log or two out of your woods every so often.

I am using pallets that I am breaking apart to build my raised beds. My little rinky dinky battery chainsaw could never do what yours is doing. But, you just do the best you can with what you have to work with.

BEN FYI I LIVE IN NORTHERN MAINE..... we have winter from usually november to april around here. down south they get spring alot earlier then we do.. as for your step building.... i STRONGLY suggest NOT USING WOOD, as much gully washes you have , rot will excel. i suggest you use stone like solid cinder blocks./.solid patio stones textured. they have texured surfaces and last longer...and you can bury them into the hill side. normal brick are too slippery when wet...and move alot, im not sure how you could work this..but here in maine having wooden steps etc.. we use shingles nailed onto the steps for traction.. or cover the steps with that green artifical grass/ rug. that ppl use for their campers to set out their chairs etc...thats pretty tough and much easier to brush or or break up ice...when frzn. the only downside - it HOLDS MOISTURE;[;[;[ and steps rot faster. also ... maybe you could get those metal traction ramps to load stuff on beds of trucks and make that into steps;];];] it has the holes all through it .. anyways glad your doing great and the boys are a huge help for you;];];] stay safe and stay ahead of the spring ticks/ chiggers etc...have a great wk;];];]

It's pretty cool how paths organically tend to form on property over time - there's something very feng shui about it.
I cut in a random skid steer path to deposit stumps toward the back of our property and I just did it by 'feel' - now that accidental path seems like it was perfectly crafted to be an integral part of the flow of our property.

Steps made from simple box frames filled with small stone and weed cloth are great for hillside access. Don't forget to add wheel barrow or in your case hand trailer friendly ramps along side each section of steps, so you don't create a workflow frustration by adding in steps that make it difficult to wheel barrow stuff about.
Ben,think about putting axel on back of chicken tractors n put removable wheels on when u want to move tractir,... then take them off n put them on shelf in ur shed or on nail on side of TRACTOR ( more handier that way ) ...small 5 inch tires that r wide n easier to roll thru hilly grass areas !!!

Ben, I love watching you saw the trees into lumber. You have a great eye. And look at the lovely beds you have that are free except for gas for the chain saw. People are paying hundreds for raised beds. Your pigs are looking great, very healthy and happy. Boys are growing like weeds, I guess it is the time in development where if you make a mark on the wall you could see growth over night. LOL. Love that the saw shavings is another by product of making lumber and another free product for use on the farm...twice. Doing great in just the short time on this homestead. Here in Australia central coast NSW we have been a bit wet still nice temp around mid twenties Celsius. But we have had 578mm of rain (almost 22 3/4 inches) up until the 23rd of March.😳
when sawing the tree trunks place a tarp down on the ground to catch the saw dust easier cleanup and you collect more for your brooders and compost

I've been adding the vinegar to the water for my budgies and cockatiels, it's made a big difference in their health and they have bred better than last year. Thanks for the tip! Your new garden beds are going to be gorgeous! The timber you've cut is beautiful. The piglets have doubled in size already, they will be enormous in no time and you'll be looking for more piglets! Are you going to breed any of your Guinea pigs? They must be old enough now.

Ben, On today's video you mentioned that you had wanted to build a portable chicken coop. You stated that you would want to be able to move one to get your birds on grass and out of lot. Well I have something that you might be interested in, its a framework thats mobil and has the support 2x6 for the floor already bolted on ready to cover,with plywood or wire. I had plans to do that with it but heart issues has meant a reevaluating projects. I would be glad to explain it in more detail or answer questions. Thanks GOD Bless
Canned beef is THE best! Mom would can mucho jars every time we butchered. It made a fast meal and the best gravy. We didn't can as much chicken as Dad wouldn't eat it but, boy! that sure was good too.
Started my parsley seeds indoors today! Spring! Yes, I try to clean at the end of Fall so Spring isn't so tough. The little greenhouses we start our seeds in I wipe down and clean the washing machine trays so next Spring will be easier. Yes, everything is a shuffling game. Where we keep the hay over the winter opens up in Spring! Yeah, your brooders are set up! Wow, that should collect mister tea!my well! Love your use of everything, including chain saw dust! Yes, improve immune system for animals with ACV. You have to have the mother in it too, right? Your place looks wonderful! That hung up tree does look dangerous! We are still having a rainy day but it is a bit warming in the Raleigh NC area.
Possible idea for you. Put a tarp down before cutting the logs. Make cleaning up the shavings easier
