It is because of these2 men I'm starting this system with my girls. I'm a 67 ish single oldie but I'm still working my garden and chickens the best that I can. I have watch both channels and this is my year. I trench my kitchen waste during winter. I'm working on planting tree guild which is taking me a minute but slow and steady. Proof one is never to old to learn. Blessings

Notice how much more grass growth is right next to the wood chips rings in wich the trees are planted. This speaks to how the compost and compost tea spreads out and helps things grow

Hey Billy great to see you guys developing community and in doing it this way your demonstrating it to your audience. Great job. I've been watching Ben and Meg pretty much since they started. They are an awesome young couple that saved their marriage through selling out and Homesteading. Ben tackles everything with common sense and roll your sleeves up and get it done work ethic that is so refreshing to watch. I absolutely love that they are teaching their kids how to love the land and do it yourself attitude. They are definitely an asset to any community. We still love Billy, Michelle and William. Y'all do awesome job of teaching folks how to live. If I wasn't rooted in Alabama so deep ( five grandchildren so I'm here to teach them)

Hey Billy, I don't recall you ever doing a video on potting up or field planting your comfrey. I see you making large divisions and planting that but the root cuttings need a bit more finess. Show them how it arrives, how to grow it out in pots and how to field plant it. Then you can refer them to the video with each shipment you send out.

Good morning Billy and Ben! Love watching both you and Hollar Homestead. You'll have convinced me I need the chickens to make my compost (and some bug control) for my garden. The eggs and meat won't hurt anything, either. Now I just need to find a chicken butchering class close to Nashville, TN. So inspiring, Ben! I’m going to implement this system over my sandy fields to help build soil for growing grass, for my cows. Chickens are little miracle workers when used well on the permaculture homestead.

One thing I do appreciate about the way y'all do it Billy, from what I've seen ( haven't watched every video 😁), is that the "lost" fertility gets spread around the property/pastures that way, plus the chickens get to eat more variety which you aren't bringing to them, although obviously there's a work trade-off with having to care for them afield, have the infrastructure for all that. I know Ben has their pasture flock as well, besides moving their meat birds on pasture, plus there pigs and cattle also helping fertilize the whole place. So, I'm appreciating all of it, and it's always cool to see what healthy things can be done in a static pen, not just mobile ones. But I just had to mention that I like that about the pastured version - having the fresh ground for the birds while also the excess juices being spread around the property... . Maybe also colonizing the compost with more variety of soil life at times from the earth in those areas... . I'm still newer to doing these things ( grew up on a dairy farm, & have had chickens, just haven't been on the land much since learning more about some of these systems) ... just thinking !
BTW folks - something I never had heard of or imagined could work, melons ( cantaloupe ) can be preserved and successfully used after ! I don't even like it, but had a bumper crop from the 2 plants I grew for my hubby & landlord last yr. . With it not keeping long and my being really busy, I wasn't getting around to finding others to give it away to either, and wondered .. then checked online. Sure enough, cantaloupe can be frozen and used in smoothies, which btw - I love the taste of ! I prepare it per normal and cube it up, freeze it as-is. Then use in smoothies with any kind of milk or yogurt and orange juice ( I use frozen concentrate, w no sugar added). I often add a tiny splash of vanilla too. Sublime !!! Now, I'm super excited to grow more cantaloupe this yr, got some amazing sounding varieties to try too. I usually grow MN midget, due to living in zone 4 WI, but these aren't too long of season varieties : Petit Gris de Rennes, & Emerald Gem I think is name of other. They're around, but I happened to buy these from Seed Saver's Exchange. They're not the lowest prices, but do important work and I could afford to get a couple things from them. My internet is slow and MIGardener's website kept not working for me, but I'd advise people to check w him 1st, cus he's a great, giving, Christian guy and has better than industry standard germination plus best value prices per seed amounts, that I've seen. I do otherwise support Pinetree as they've been a great stand-by for me in the past and have a great selection of herbs. My friend's cousin's company (also Christians last I knew) Everwilde, features re-sealable mylar bags & bulk sizes of many things.

Billy, I really enjoy your interviews. You've been all over the place lately. I really enjoyed this Interview, because I have been following Meg and the boys when they were still in the LA area. Somewhere along the way I ran into Justin and his family, which brought my attention to the Fit Farmer and Sow the Land. They really came to my attention because I have a Niece that lives and works in Asheville. Another family or two joined them and then you came along. I have wanted to start a homestead for an Eternity, but so far it hasn't happened. Now my age and lack of money is preventing me. I've learned a lot from all of you, but not as much as you might think, because I have been into organic gardening, compost, solar, chickens etc. I belonged to Master Gardener and an organization called Iowa Center for Local Self-Reliance. When I was 10 yo, I spent the summer at my Grandparents farm in Nebraska. My Dad was transferred from Texas to Des Moines Iowa so I was driving a tractor when I was 10. I went to get the milk cows at milking time, gathered the eggs, and even help take a pig (dead) to the Vets to find out why several of them died. My Uncles were surprised how a city girl would handle seeing one being slit from throat to his privates. Haha! There have been times I have been able to answer a question that was posed to a newer homesteader....like how can you get eggs from a chicken without a rooster? Keep up the good work and maybe one of these days, God may bless me with a way of having a homestead too!

Ok, I’m using doubled up regular fencing so I’m gonna have to try hardware cloth now because my crazy rooster got his head stuck a few weeks ago in my ring and almost took his cone off and he can’t get his head in hardware cloth.

Have ton of oak leaves and pine straw to rake thinking of dumping this in my 20 x30 run let my girls work it for a month then put it in a compost bin.

I have an extra 3 acres on my homestead that is scrub grass a few pine trees and the soil is a loam/sand type. I would like to turn it into a grazing pasture. What would you recommend I plant or do to the ground to achieve this? I have no problem waiting an year to let it develop but I do want to start grazing it the spring of 2024. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I have a story: While at a feed store in NC to purchase a pallet of dog food for my 150 greyhounds, a local dairy/cattle farmer asked me why I would raise dogs. I replied, because they make me money, and I love each of them. He replied, my herd also makes me money and I love them as well, but I can eat them.

Do you get alot of flies? I live in town and have neighbors. I'm going to raise chickens and will make a compost pile like this. What can I do to control flies?
The chickens themselves control flies. Many people move their chickens in 3-4 days after cows or sheep so the chickens can eat the fly larvae out of the manure.
Come on let’s get a good mic spend a couple dollars. You do a good job. Get some good equipment.

Im obsessed with compost I make Johnson su compost my mom has chickens and we used to just dump the manure straight in the garden until I took over and started to mske compost I have 5 piles on the go I like to age the piles for 2 years before I use them make the piles with pallets 4 feet wide 8ft long 7feet in height and use a variety of different ingredients like soaked wood chips and leaves as the main ingredients then chicken bedding mixed with wood chips and leaves I add wood and bone char insect frass kelp meal chicken fetters and guts fish waste variety of rock dusts including gypsum and I add sea 90 salt homemade fish hydrolysate bamboo vinegar leaf mold aged compost I’m going to be collecting IMO indigenous micro organisms from a nearby forest to inoculate each layer green hay from my moms yard the compost is amazing!! You don’t have to use a ton of it if you make 2 huge piles a year after two years you will always have enough to go around but you can also just use chicken bedding leaves and wood chips and it will be an amazing product!
