As a grizzled longbeard, there wasn't much in this video for me. I thought it was great though! I especially liked how you demonstrated your deployment with actual models on the table and really explained your reasoning. Great for the beardlings. Can't wait for more videos from you.
I came here for the dwarf content, but it's a good video format and I'd like more people to get into playing the old world, so a how to start vid for every faction is a great idea.
Very nice demonstration on deployment and reasoning for why you deploy that way. Deployment has always been my biggest weak point so this helps very much.
Production quality is improving, your lighting is looking much better Richy! 👏💡 Great approach using real-world situations that beginners find themselves, in regards to building an army with your first purchases. The Dwarfen Mountain Holds have such a great variety of units that it's tough to commit, so getting these great recommendations is super valuable especially when it comes time to expand. The deployment demonstration was a nice addition, and I would suggest the opposite angle (your POV) since players won't be looking at their own army from the other side of the board (though I recommend players do that during their games, as it helps you see your force from your opponent's POV). Fantastic video and I think it will give a lot of new players exactly what they need to succeed! 👏

Dwarves are always going to be known as a gunline army, but they have some very useful, but expensive combat troops! I'll send this to my friend, who's just decided to build himself a bearded army and see if he picks up on some of the things you've said here 😄
Yeah the problem is with the low move you need the range projection , don’t get me wrong you can yeet a unit a turn but then it’s undefended out in the mid board , I’ve been to events with purely melee dwarves but it’s a hard day with some match ups haha
Love this, and I just hope to remember it when it comes time to play! One thing I would love some advice on however, alternative models to GW. I've been printing the Steelhill Dwarfs from Dakkadakka and came across so many different mini ranges and files for variety

@@Dawiafterdark Played my first game today, 1k points vs empire, I had your shieldbearer thane (non bsb), fireball thane, 16 rangers, 10 ironbreakers and 11 hammerers and I got very lucky, only losing 4 dwarfs total but getting I think 1250 victory points vs my regular opponent, wiped his army plus general plus 3 banners, and we're STOKED to play more.
This list is simply perfect for the Dwarven Hold Mountain Battalion, only a small extra investment required. What do you think about Longbeards? are them better than warriors in cost/performance? And one more question, what to do with a box of hammerers? does it worth building 10 of them with 1h and shield? they look awesome.
@@tehgriefer9317 so if your running royal clans , or a king in your list then 100 percent as they are core. If not I wouldn’t run Longbeards . But if they are in core they are amazing ! So I really like hammerers , drakes are a more competitive option but hammerers are awesome
My plan for my initial Dawi list is a battalion box, Miners box, cannon+organ gun box, and then the engineer box. planning to run them as an expeditionary force and upgrading them all to the tits. The "fun" is going to be the 2 units of 10 miners with steam drills and the rangers + copters getting nice and up in everyone's business. No idea if it will be good but to be honest I dont care xD It will look like a Dawi army but should give me a few more options than static gunline.
@@Dawiafterdark Also bringing a miners cart so that my warriors can stand and shoot with blasting charges (but mostly because if it blows up and wipes out a huge chunk of my frontline I think it would be really funny)

Hopping other example of list for royal clan and xpedition! Highland miniatures are very very nice :). I print all my army from them STL ^^
Thank you ! Have a go with it you’ll be surprised how well it works as the units that pop stubborn survive and you keep the points so it’s a really good points denial tactic . And me ! Have you seen white angel miniatures ? I’m going to print some dwarfs from that range too

I was wondering, as starting TOW with my old dwarf army, how can we deal with ethereal units? Ive seen really few things that give us magical attacks. Just the rune for the guns on the thane, the hammerers and the anvil can do magical attacks. Im I missing something? Green Knight is starting to drive me crazy.
So , any rune gives magical attacks we actually have the most access to magical attacks of any of the armies . You can give champions magical attacks with any rune , any rune on artillery gives magical and the fireball thanes :)

Hey Richie great video! Quick Q: You only mention the role of the breath weapon on the gyro for skirmirshers, but the clattergun I assume is for weak chaff units of infantry?

Yeah so for the clatter gun would just be pot shots at lightly armoured infantry or trying to make units with evade use it early , the point of the steam gun on skirmish units is you can usually position where you can hit most of the unit and it doesn’t suffer any negative modifiers to hit like ballistic skill shooting into them .
Thank you so much for the videos, it's been really helpful. I play daemons in 40K and AoS, but Dwarves have always been my favorite fantasy race, so I'm making this my project for the year. I do have a question; I'd like to do an emphasis on the engineering aspect of dwarves (artillery, ranged infantry protected by elite melee infantry, etc.) As such I was thinking about using the 4 engineers you get in a box as opposed to kings and thanes for the time being. Would you advise me to build the starter box any differently to how you put it together here? Any thoughts on longbeards as opposed to warriors? How about subfaction/ follow-up purchases? I'm reading up but don't quite grasp the rules yet
I've just received my battalion box this video has been so helpful. My local club is doing a slow grow to introduce TOW to new players, we're starting at 750 points how would you trim the 1000pts down to 750?
@@METAPHYSICSOFEVIL so I would just scale it down the hero points , at that level I would take a gun thane , and runesmith with two spell breaking , you won’t need a bsb as badly as there shouldn’t be dragons :)
Thank you ! So as you can’t fit in a anvil really at those points I would surest one so you have some agency in the game , being able to tech out and touch your opponent really helps
@@sebastiandominguez2601 so I did say that this was the cheapest way building up but if you wanted could add an anvil , but luckily most damage spells are fire which the irondrakes have a 5 up on are too , and illusion shouldn’t bother you too much as you won’t be charging with this list
I think the more competitive you want to play you will need to be able to stop some spells , but with the magic resist built in and the anvil only being a level three for dispelling you can’t dispell most of the time anyway , luckily most spells don’t do too much to us apart from pillar of fire

Hi ! So in grand army you can have both and choose , the in the journal army the royal clans you have to pick one to have all game so the warriors in the grand army and x force are much for versatile
On top of the damage push through being higher, grudge throwers just need to see the target. Cannons still need to have LOS to the spot they are placing even with large target.
@@Dawiafterdark Yeah but a grudge thrower only got a 27% chance to hit while a cannon gets 67% chance to hit. If you include an engineer grudge thrower only 33% chance to hit while a cannon gets 88% chance to hit. Sure the cannon only AP2 but it does have AB2 and alot more likely to hit.
@@Dawiafterdark Great mate! I have tried to have one smaller unit of 8 to scout up the field to get some early kills/harass. Have worked good in some games. But from now on i will try using them in open order instead.
@@Dawiafterdark Small recap: Had a small 750p test game yesterday against nomadic waagh. 14 rangers in open order, 9 drakes, some warriors and a gyro. After 6 rounds i had lost 1 drake and a single wound on my gyro. The greenskins had a bigboss on boar left on the table. And it was fleeing. Great fun to try for me, not so much for my mate. Next time i will try Royal Clans with less shooting more combat.
Great video mate! The thane with shiedbearers is only unit strength 1? It does say in the rules though that it's actually 4 models, so why wouldn't it be 4?
@@BenGoodvachDraffin so it counts as four models for the amount of models in the unit , but it only counts as unit strength 1 as it’s an infantry model
Hmm ok yeah the rule does say '...a model with shieldbearers hhas a split profile and follows the cavalry rule. In all other respects, this model is heavy infantry' Seems like an oversight though
I've tried this deployment but without the hill I've found the the grudge throwers won't have LOS due to the wide lines so they will need to fire indirect. How do I get around that?
@@Dawiafterdark ah yes duh good point. I play against an alarming amount of Bretonnia players who run the Duke on peg which has clouded my brain as of late. Normally I run both on extreme opposite flanks for brets.
Great video! Love the practical examples! Without a hill where you put an organ gun in this set up? I don’t have two grudge throwers atm. I have 14 rangers and 10 iron drakes to make the gun line with iron breakers and longbeards behind waiting.
@@RubenSanchez-b2l tanky as shot heros to challenge them out while you have static combat res 7 units so you win combat , double outnumber them so hopefully they flee and if they roll bad and roll well run them down I’ve done that a fair few times now
@@Dawiafterdark the problem i saw is that, if you want to have at least a +5 in combat with double banner, etc to match a -5 in a dragon duel challenge, you have to resiste first charge, and have a lot of multiple charges later, if you do so, you dont expend enough points on range to try to kill big dragons or something, bad times to be a dwarf player in dragonhammer because is ease to have a charge by 2 dragons, or dragon + phoenix+eagle...
@@RubenSanchez-b2l if you have banner of hesitation they don’t get first charge :) as it’s an ability that procs from charging :) so personally from lots of experience we can’t kill triple save dragons with ranged attacks , but what we can do it table the rest of the army around the dragon and lock the dragon in combat , then with abit of luck beat it in combat , rune of smiting definitely helps , it’s a hard game initially multiple dragons . But most armies struggle it’s not just us :)
I got made to order stuff. Expet kings and slayers. (Dragon company with comand; helga. Engemers .comand? )all metal and one even got DC paper baner. I happy with them as i pla it 3rd army in future. I sad i miss cards becose same sneke goblin send my local shop it "could"o order cards. Before like before pre order.. but it turns out he cold not and he even talko to represantive. I was sad bacose that day i visit gw store. At least i got dwarfs dice.

I was wondering, as starting TOW with my old dwarf army, how can we deal with ethereal units? Ive seen really few things that give us magical attacks. Just the rune for the guns on the thane, the hammerers and the anvil can do magical attacks. Im I missing something? Green Knight is starting to drive me crazy.
So , any rune gives magical attacks we actually have the most access to magical attacks of any of the armies . You can give champions magical attacks with any rune , any rune on artillery gives magical and the fireball thanes :)

Hey Richie great video! Quick Q: You only mention the role of the breath weapon on the gyro for skirmirshers, but the clattergun I assume is for weak chaff units of infantry?

Yeah so for the clatter gun would just be pot shots at lightly armoured infantry or trying to make units with evade use it early , the point of the steam gun on skirmish units is you can usually position where you can hit most of the unit and it doesn’t suffer any negative modifiers to hit like ballistic skill shooting into them .
Thank you so much for the videos, it's been really helpful. I play daemons in 40K and AoS, but Dwarves have always been my favorite fantasy race, so I'm making this my project for the year. I do have a question; I'd like to do an emphasis on the engineering aspect of dwarves (artillery, ranged infantry protected by elite melee infantry, etc.) As such I was thinking about using the 4 engineers you get in a box as opposed to kings and thanes for the time being. Would you advise me to build the starter box any differently to how you put it together here? Any thoughts on longbeards as opposed to warriors? How about subfaction/ follow-up purchases? I'm reading up but don't quite grasp the rules yet
I've just received my battalion box this video has been so helpful. My local club is doing a slow grow to introduce TOW to new players, we're starting at 750 points how would you trim the 1000pts down to 750?
@@METAPHYSICSOFEVIL so I would just scale it down the hero points , at that level I would take a gun thane , and runesmith with two spell breaking , you won’t need a bsb as badly as there shouldn’t be dragons :)

Thank you ! So as you can’t fit in a anvil really at those points I would surest one so you have some agency in the game , being able to tech out and touch your opponent really helps

@@sebastiandominguez2601 so I did say that this was the cheapest way building up but if you wanted could add an anvil , but luckily most damage spells are fire which the irondrakes have a 5 up on are too , and illusion shouldn’t bother you too much as you won’t be charging with this list

I think the more competitive you want to play you will need to be able to stop some spells , but with the magic resist built in and the anvil only being a level three for dispelling you can’t dispell most of the time anyway , luckily most spells don’t do too much to us apart from pillar of fire

I love the idea of Fireball Thane, but why not give those great runes to an Engineer with BS 5 ?

Hi ! So in grand army you can have both and choose , the in the journal army the royal clans you have to pick one to have all game so the warriors in the grand army and x force are much for versatile

Why Grudge Thrower? Isn't it inferior to Cannon?
@@piotrtylkowski388 grudge thrower being ap 3 and d3 plus one damage is load better at dealing with monsters than the cannon
On top of the damage push through being higher, grudge throwers just need to see the target. Cannons still need to have LOS to the spot they are placing even with large target.
@@Dawiafterdark Yeah but a grudge thrower only got a 27% chance to hit while a cannon gets 67% chance to hit.
If you include an engineer grudge thrower only 33% chance to hit while a cannon gets 88% chance to hit.
Sure the cannon only AP2 but it does have AB2 and alot more likely to hit.
Do you ever use rangers in skirmish formation?
Not really mate as if they aren’t in one line they obscure themselves , and when you get charged you get less attacks , I prefer them in lines

I have tried to have one smaller unit of 8 to scout up the field to get some early kills/harass. Have worked good in some games.
But from now on i will try using them in open order instead.
Yeah try them in open order I’ve had Mich more success you can still scout in open which is good !
@@Dawiafterdark Small recap: Had a small 750p test game yesterday against nomadic waagh. 14 rangers in open order, 9 drakes, some warriors and a gyro.
After 6 rounds i had lost 1 drake and a single wound on my gyro. The greenskins had a bigboss on boar left on the table. And it was fleeing.
Great fun to try for me, not so much for my mate. Next time i will try Royal Clans with less shooting more combat.

The thane with shiedbearers is only unit strength 1? It does say in the rules though that it's actually 4 models, so why wouldn't it be 4?
@@BenGoodvachDraffin so it counts as four models for the amount of models in the unit , but it only counts as unit strength 1 as it’s an infantry model
As in it takes the space of four models and fills two spaces on the tank behind

Hmm ok yeah the rule does say '...a model with shieldbearers hhas a split profile and follows the cavalry rule. In all other respects, this model is heavy infantry'

I've tried this deployment but without the hill I've found the the grudge throwers won't have LOS due to the wide lines so they will need to fire indirect. How do I get around that?
So if you fire at large targets you can see them over your units and large targets are what you want to hit with them :)
@@Dawiafterdark ah yes duh good point. I play against an alarming amount of Bretonnia players who run the Duke on peg which has clouded my brain as of late. Normally I run both on extreme opposite flanks for brets.
Brets have a super rough time against us to be honest , yeah 100 percent the tactic , just clipping the back of a wood aswell if you can haha

@@RubenSanchez-b2l tanky as shot heros to challenge them out while you have static combat res 7 units so you win combat , double outnumber them so hopefully they flee and if they roll bad and roll well run them down I’ve done that a fair few times now
@@Dawiafterdark the problem i saw is that, if you want to have at least a +5 in combat with double banner, etc to match a -5 in a dragon duel challenge, you have to resiste first charge, and have a lot of multiple charges later, if you do so, you dont expend enough points on range to try to kill big dragons or something, bad times to be a dwarf player in dragonhammer because is ease to have a charge by 2 dragons, or dragon + phoenix+eagle...
@@RubenSanchez-b2l if you have banner of hesitation they don’t get first charge :) as it’s an ability that procs from charging :) so personally from lots of experience we can’t kill triple save dragons with ranged attacks , but what we can do it table the rest of the army around the dragon and lock the dragon in combat , then with abit of luck beat it in combat , rune of smiting definitely helps , it’s a hard game initially multiple dragons . But most armies struggle it’s not just us :)
