I honestly loved the hell out of this. It's kinda cool to be able to see how many places you'll go back to and floods of gaming memories hit you like a truck. Especially the businesses that just aren't there any more :\

The feelings you talk about when returning to your old gaming hangouts feel happy and sad at the same time. I get that every time I go to my grandmothers as I used to love there. When I go in to my old room (which is now empty) the scent in there reminds of of gaming on the PS1, Mega Drive and N64. It even has the same carpet and I can see the indentations in it from me sat on my chair playing the N64. It creates a mild flashback sensation. Sad and happy all at once :)

TheGebs24 I totally understand what you mean! Going back to those places is indeed a happy and sad experience. They're sad because it was such a special moment in time that we can never quite go back to. It's almost like a lost friend. It's also happy because in takes you back for a brief second to that time and makes you feel connected to it again. I've also heard that smells give our greatest connection to memories. So if it had a unique smell it certainly triggers your emotions even stronger.

I have a lot of memories playing games for the first time over at friend's homes. I had one friend who lived down the street, and he had an NES in his bedroom. I would go over to his house and play his NES and games like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, The Legend of Zelda, and Double Dragon, before I even had an NES myself. Once I got my NES, he would just let me borrow his games.
I had another friend who lived on the other side of my neighborhood, and his mom picked up an SNES for him and his brothers just shortly after it was released. I remember him calling me and telling me the news, and me jumping on my bike and racing over there. They had it hooked up to the TV down in their basement rec room, and I remember going down there and laying eyes on Super Mario World for the very first time.

This was a great episode and I love how you skateboard to your old neighbourhood. It's fun to go back and feel the memories in the same places. I have a few different game playing places I would go to as a kid and a few friends and cousin's houses. So I'll share my first memory of the very first place I played a video game, which is where I grew up in Tasmania and it was Space Invaders at the local Fish n Chip shop when games were 20 cents and I was about 5 at the time. Last time I went there, the Fish n Chip shop still exists too :)

Ahh man I can relate to this quite a bit. Although I still do in fact live in the same neighborhood where I spent my entire life living at, the many friends I had that lived in the same neighborhood either moved away or grew up and moved on. All that's really left is the memories that I cherish very much. Most of my neighborhood friends had family issues but I seemed to be the only kid with a nice 'normal' family. Especially when it came to my mom since she was extremely kind to everyone and would even treat my friends like her own children in a way and they all loved being around her for that since she kind of felt like the 'true' mom that they never had to them. Because of this, my house was always the hangout place where we would all gather and play Super Smash Bros.

That is such an awesome video. This is one of the best things about gaming is the memories from them and the people you're with. Nowadays it's just not as personal since everything is about online and streaming and etc, it's still cool because it's easier than ever to share those moments, but they aren't quite as unique of an experience either.

I can definitely relate to the feelings of nostalgia you had from visiting your old neighbourhood. I took my wife for a tour of my old neighbour, that I haven't lived in for 25 years, when we were back in the UK this May. So many feelings and memories came flooding back; parks that I'd played football in, trees I'd climbed, places I'd ridden my bike, and of course, friends houses at which I'd played video games. I guess it would be odd to most people the way we associate places in our old neighbourhoods with the games we'd played there but those are extremely strong memories.
Thanks for sharing this tour of your old stomping grounds, it was really interesting to watch.

I'll never forget my childhood and formative years growing up in a small rural village in England. When my friends and I weren't pissing off the local residents with our skateboarding, we were round each other's houses playing videogames. It was also a great thrill to visit the arcades at the nearby seaside resort and play the likes of Space Harrier, X-Men, Outrun, Strider, Golden Axe...the list goes on. Great times.

I’ve watched your channel since the very beginning. My account used to be called “RobinHoodFox74 “ but I lost access to it long ago. But man I just had to comment how bizarre it is that after hearing all of your stories about Andrew and the Katos where you first saw Phantasy Star. I weirdly imagined a street that looked something like this! How is it possible that my imagination and the reality match so well haha. I think I once emailed you this video of two Brits talking about the SNES Street Fighter II, doing a guide and you told me that it was a fun little video but they knew nothing about how to play Street Fighter lol. I laughed so much I’ll never forget that. Your channel is still what I watch the most on TH-cam. The positivity you have is one of the best things for sure. So glad Rob is doing better now too!

I'm lucky since my mom still lives in the same house that they built in 1979 so when I go over and visit her it brings back all the memories of all my gaming I did as a kid up until the mid 90's. We got an Atari in 80, my NES in 87, SNES in 91 and the house still looks almost the same as it did back then with only a few changes. The neighborhood is still the same, what I should do is hook up some of my old systems when I go over there and play them in the old school / retro house lol. I can drive around the area as well and have so many memories from friends houses and walking to school and skipping school too lol

My fondest video game memory was from my best childhood buddy. He had 3 older brothers with parents divorced and they all lived with his dad. Dad was never home during the day so we would swim ,BBQ cheeseburgers, drink beer, smoke cigarettes, and listen to 8 tracks with his brothers. We played the Atari 2600 to death and would have tournaments with all the Intellivision Sports games. In 1982 his father had a special B-day party for him and a truck pulled up to deliver his present. What was under the tarp was something that would leave me stuttering in disbelief. It was a brand spanking new Donkey Kong arcade machine. The neighbor down a few blocks owned the only arcade in the area and he bought it from him. Never played, never plugged in. I'll never forget the first time it powered on and the look on my buddies face. We were two of the luckiest 8 year old kids on earth that day.

  • @zborgerd

Wow! The G. Darius Kimera II track was a surprise. I love Zuntata, that game, and the soundtrack.
Would always play NES / SNES / Genesis at my friends' places. We'd even marathon SNES RPGs with everyone taking turns at the controls. We beat Dragon Warrior II / III, Final Fantasy II / IV, III, Secret of Mana, BoF, and even most of 7th Saga that way. Good times.
Used to do a thing at Putt-Putt Golf and games called "Super Saturday". About $7 would get you hours of unlimited games in their arcade, and they would cater in pizza. My friends and I did that on many weekends in the mid-'90s.
I'd walk several miles just to play Street Fighter II in a 7-Eleven. That was before we could play it on consoles. Now, there is an arcade (more like a museum) about 20 minutes away from me where I've brought my son to play games and pinball. Nothing compares to arcades in a world where online play has lost that truly social aspect of gaming.

Cool to see man. Did this with a friend of mine a while back. We were driving in our old neighbourhood seeing it completely changed. When we drove through the old street of ours reviving painfull but also the awesome moments at the same time.
Here in the Netherlands around the 90's it was completely different next to the States. There weren't any arcades in my hometown at the time. Yes one but it was too far and you had to be sixteen to get in. So there was a lot of borrowing going around.
One time round '92 ( I was like 7 ) there had opened a gamestore in our town. Purely selling games. This was first timer for me don't forget that. Damn I spasmed for about an hour ( I couldnt believe myself "I thought I was dead, landed in heaven" ), my dad always smiled when we talked about that moment. He thought I got a stroke.
Seeing all those statues of Mario. I can still remember Altered Beast Flag/Banner against the wall. But for some reasons I hated being a gamer in the Netherlands or the rest Europe because we always cut short of really good games or release date that were set back like half a god damn year ( MGSII). All Because the Germans and French are to lazy to learn Anglais...

TheSolMike Ooh btw the game I got from my dad was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Time with a SNES USA converter. Because the Europeans got screwed over that one too :P

I've gamed at so many places. But my Sega Genesis days started in Corpus Christi Texas. Saturday Morning Cartoons, sleep overs, the smell of Pine Sol as my mom cleaned and pancakes as she cooked and playing SONIC THE HEDGEHOG while "come out and play" was on the radio. Beautiful times :).

I remember as a kid, there was an arcade in Brentwood Mall (where the Starbucks is now) where my dad used to take me all the time. I don't really rememeber most of the games that were in there but being as young as I was I stuck to things like skeeball and some of the older racing games like Final Lap.

The local arcade in my town was the only decent hangout place every weekend but when my parents wanted to go shopping in the mall they let us go to the Arcade. I remembered every kid was around the MK3 machines a lot.

We had a convienience store near my house that always had at least 1 arcade game in it. Me and my friends would come up there and play all the time. The owner/clerk would challenge my older friends to arm wrestling and if they won he would give them chips or a drink. Im going back to that town as soon as I can and visiting all the old stores like you did and see how everything has changed. Been gone since about '92.

The arcade I frequented as a kid was in a mall that doesn't exist anymore. Played such gems as Soul Calibur, Time Crisis, House of the Dead, Daytona USA, and they even have a few older games like Galaga and Xevious. I remember my cousin and I would take turns on the floor working the pedals while the other would shoot in Time Crisis because we were so little.
