7th Saga was one of those games I loved quite a bit when it came out. I even beat it twice with two different heroes... There are very few JRPGs I have actually liked so much I went through it twice. I am sure it doesn't hold-up today, but I liked it back then. Enix was one of my favorite companies in the day.

+SuperDerek RPGs I was really enjoying Quest 64. But at the time I was renting it from Block Buster. Remember when that was a thing. So I never got too far in the game. I always wanted to go back and complete it. I could see why you don't like the game. I had some mix feelings about it and it was nowheres close to as good as Ocarina of Time. I think the fact that I never finished it is what makes me really curious about it.

Faxanadu for NES. That game was hard as hell, damn. I wanted to get into so badly, because the game has wonderful music, great graphics, and for what I could tell a decent story. But the brutality of the game was just too damn much for my twelve year old self. I should really try this again someday.

I'm pretty open-minded about every RPG I played, but one series I'm trying to like is the Persona series. I can't stand the high-school setting, the dating sim mechanics, and just about all of the characters. The music is amazing, but everything else just doesn't click with me :(

    • @unagisauce
      @unagisauce 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Honestly, this series was hard for me to transition into, as well. I came from SMT: Nocturne, and the dating sim aspect put me off of Persona at first. Just stick with it for a couple of months (in-game, of course) and the gameplay will start to become second nature to you. In no time at all, you'll find yourself planning out all your social links for the coming days without even thinking about it.

Hmmmm. One Christmas when I was like 8 years old my dad tried his darndest to pick me up Dragon Ball Final Bout but games like that were much more difficult to locate so he got me a few other games that Christmas instead.
Namely one called Beyond the Beyond. To this day I have a certain degree of fondness for it, but at the same time I recall just one liking it very much at all. I also had a gameshark back then and I used it to super overpower my characters. This caused me to get stuck in a never ending loop within a battle I was supposed to lose, but the enemy couldn’t kill my characters hahaha

    • @collinz126
      @collinz126 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Ben Russell Yeah, it was very generic. Kinda cool tho, in a weird way.
Rogue Galaxy is a game that could be called "generic" in terms of how it has such a by the numbers cast and situations/scenarios. Yet Rogue Galaxy is also an awesome game, which Beyond the Beyond is not lol

Maybe "Immortal" on the Sega Genesis. Still find it to be a great visually looking game, but is was just too difficult for me at the time. A couple of months ago I saw a walkthrough of the game and it still seemed to be too dificult a game :)
That's I think the only RPG-ish kinda game that I've never completed and I've played a lot of RPG's like:
Sega Master System: Golvellius: Valley Of Doom, Golden Axe Warrior, Mirracle Warriors: Seal Of The Dark Lord, etc.
Sega Megadrive / Genesis: Sword Of Vermillion, Dungeons & Dragons, Shining Force I & II, Shining In The Darkness, The Story Of Thor, Landstalker, Flashback (dunno if you can call that an RPG?!), etc.
NES: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Zelda, The Legend Of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link, etc.
SNES: Zelda: A Link To The Past, Secret Of Mana, etc.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, FFX-2, FFXII, FFXIII, The Last Story & Bravely Default. FFTA because of the law system, that was annoying. FFXII people like but I didn't, the characters (Basch might of been ok), the story and the way they changed the gameplay. FFX-2 & FFXIII make fun of themselves, so nothing to say there. The Last Story, played a few hours and didn't care for the characters or the clunky battle system that's trying to be like a western game. And let's not forget Bravely Default, it was an awesome game! Battle system was back to being awesome for an RPG, music was good, characters were so-so (you could do worse), job system and customization like setting percentage of random battles were terrific (that's how you do a random battle style RPG). But what ruins the entire thing you may ask??? Having to do the game over and over and over and over and over and over and over again! It's what killed it for me!!! Also the story wasn't anything special.

    Final Fantasy X
FF7 was my first RPG and I loved it and played through it and beaten the final boss by accident.
FF8 was also pretty much ok... never beaten it, but maybe some time
FF9 was also great. Loved the chars and the whole story, but at the end, I gave up... was a time, where I never really grinded and just got underleveled through the story, mashing "attack"... xD
FF10 was just uninteresting. Maybe cause I hated the beach-boy looking main char and the lack of an overworld killed it for me.
And... the stupid... ball... minigame... (loved the card-battles so much more).

Final Fantasy VIII; I absolutely hated all the random encounters as you moved across the map. It put me off any RPG incorporating the random battle mechanic.

Though it was quite recent, for me it was Final Fantasy IX. I always loved the style from an AMV I saw many years ago and finally could get to play it on game pass. I loved the story, the characters (Zidane not so much) but what I think killed it for me were the ATB battle system and the camera. I just can't get used to that style of battle system, and the camera is sometimes on weird angles that makes it uncomfortable.

One game comes to mind for me, and it's considered to be one of the greatest RPG's of all time to most. I'll never understand why that is. Anyway, the game is Chrono Cross. Chrono Trigger was absolute perfection, and so I was really, really looking forward to this. I didn't bother renting it first like I normally would have. I thought to myself "Why bother? It's the sequel to freakin' Chrono Trigger, of course it's going to be incredible!" Imagine my horror when I stuck it in my PS1 and quickly discovered that everything that made Chrono Trigger so amazing had been chucked out the window. The fantastic battle system had been replaced with a new shitty one, the fantastic characters were replaced with loads of very unlikable new ones, and the very innovative, cool, and exciting time travel gimmick was replaced with a boring parallel world. I've always really wanted to like it, so every once in a blue moon I'll pick it back up and give it another go. Unfortunately, I never get far before giving up on it. Playing that game is like torture for me. I feel the same way that most people do when they play Action 52.

j06 The thing is, they still could have made almost exactly the same game without it being a Chrono Trigger sequel, and that's what they should have done. Apparently they don't believe in the popular saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

+chunkymonkey Last year, bought it from the PlayStation Store to play on my Vita. Never got around to playing it before on the original PlayStation. On having a Vita not not a huge amount of games to play on it I decided it was the right time to play this game. The only other Final Fantasy game I have played was FFX on the PS2 and not bring able to get into that back then I was a bit skeptical if I would be able to get into FFVII. While it was a lot better then X it still didn't really gel with me, not really sure why. I still have it on my Vita so will probably try it again at some point. I do tend to prefer RPG's like Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. Think it might be the heavy Japanese sense of humor that's usually in the Final Fantasy game's that doesn't sit well with me. I do like the look of the early FF games on Super Nintendo, have heard FF6 is brilliant.

I played the heck out of that game, beating it many times. Despite the upgrade in graphics and some wonderful music, the game was a total SLOG ( ! ) for me. I didn't like how long it held my hand, I didn't like how often it forced me to it's linear path, I didn't like how often it forced me to switch characters.

I remember playing Might and Magic 2 way back in the day on my friend's family Macintosh. It ran in a small window and it was in black and white. It was head and shoulders above any other rpg I had played up to this point despite it's shortcomings. I had a gold box game on the C64 (Curse of the Azure Bonds) and stuff like FF1 and Dragon Warrior on the Nintendo. MM2 blew them all away with it's complexity and difficulty. The Mac also had the ability to reproduce almost cd quality music and sound effects which I had never heard up until that point.
MM2 has such a rich and strange world it pulled me in. The genesis version is close to the Mac version but the PC version is pretty flat. What I wouldn't give to get my hands on the Mac version.

So, for the NA release of 7th Saga Enix actually slowed down, significantly, the exp and money rate from combat. Furthermore they reduced the stat gain bonuses from higher levels too. The gains were always random, but every 10 levels your min and max stat gains for every stat increased by 1. Worse, they didn't remove those values for the other apprentices if you fought them, which is why they could be near impossible to beat them. That said, I still love 7th Saga.

Chrono trigger. Man I really tried. Many things were totally unacceptable - kazzilion endings, I'm forced to leave some of characters aside, getting stuck by not knowing where to go, everything seems seen already, etc. If there is no nostalgic value and you played many rpgs, this game is just meh and tiresome. I just could not get myself to care. Forced myself to spend like 25 hours in it, because it is a classic I must complete, or at least be familiar with, got to the late game and dropped. Not interested, don't care.

+robert hebert It's just my personal opinion. I totally get, how people would enjoy multiple endings, how that adds to the replay value and such. But for me, I want to have all that game has to deliver in one setting. It's like I want to read one full story, not to discover, that there are multiple possible endings, choose Your own. Mostly I play games once. I do not want to replay 3/4 of the game, so I can just discover different animation at the end. Only way I can tolerate multiple endings, is when the whole game can be played differently. Like in Uncharted Waters, where You choose different character (piracy or trading) and that changes all the rule set and changes whole game. Would you like to see a LOTR trilogy, where third part is choice from 5? Beginning with one, where everyone becomes dwarf lords and ending with one, where whole story is just a program implanted in Neo's mind? Me - not.

+Afig24 I have never played game with requirement to grind, except for some MMORPGs. It's new to me. I do not see how that adds to the game value, it's just a repetitive actions to prolong game play hours. But I'm starting to feel it, may be that is the way player is forced to appreciate the achievements. Not the coolest thing tho, today it would be hard to explain to younger audiences (or me), where is the fun in that. But the story and execution of cinematics is amazing.

    • @Afig24
      @Afig24 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmmm well you must be very talented in the strategic aspects of RPGs because I have always had to grind to advance beyond many points in older games haha. Props to you my man. I do love the dedicated hard work feeling after grinding hard and accomplishing something, but yeah I do agree it does get repetitive fairly quickly at times. Especially if you are just getting into battles because you want to steal/drop that certain rare item in order to alchemise it. Shit gets so old you're not even happy anymore when you finally get it.

You have to grind in 7th Saga, that’s for sure. If you read the manual, you’d learn that you have to defend-attack. Weird mechanic but it’s seriously the only way to beat it.

FFX. I don't like the romance between Titus and Yuna. Also Tales of Zesteria. The protagonist is annoying IMO.

I did a full playthrough of Arcana on my channel gosh like, 4 years ago now, and I remember the most annoying thing about it was that there was no button to strafe left and right when walking around in the dungeons.. >.< So everywhere you went, you'd have to turn and then take a step EVERYWHERE if you wanted to fill out the entire map and that just felt like a slog.

FFX. Insufferable character, horrible writing and dialogue with even worse voice acting. I did like the Sphere Grid tho.. almost everything else.. lol no.

It was actually the other way around, Johnny. Penfold had Hydlide and I never played it (that's still true to this day). I bought Super Hydlide during the same U.S. trip that I bought Mystic Defender.
Since I'd never played the first Hydlide, I had no idea how it dealt with weight/encumbrance (I'm assuming it did; again, I never played the original). So I grinded at the beginning to get enough money to buy some sweet armor. I was so proud of myself! When I exited the shop, I literally couldn't move my character. I had no idea why, I just knew that my dream of loving this new RPG was shattered. That's been a running joke between Johnny and I for YEARS now...
Much later (this century in fact), I did go back and finish Super Hydlide - but it wasn't enough to erase the brain stink of that first day playing it as a kid...

I really wanted to get into Phantasy Star 3. Basically I had played and liked 2, forgot where I put my genesis collection, rediscovered it, was told to try PS4, it has been blowing my friggin mind so far (doing and posting a blind ironman run), tried 2 again, liked it, then tried 3 and...just...the description sounded really cool, but even the collection said it was the black sheep but uhh...dang, that translation and bizarre music though. I might re-re-re-re-re-re-try it, but man that was jarring.

Lunar. My god I can't get into Lunar. I tried, I really did but it is just so BORING. I'm convinced the fanbase for this game consists of only people who were impressed by the PS1 cutscenes. I just don't get it.

People are going to rage at me but whatever. I tried and tried to get into FF IX and FF VI, couldn't do it. I would keep going back to them because people would say how amazing they are but I found them boring and couldn't get hooked. To each their own, I guess.

ff ix was odd, there were so many missables (annoying), so many minigames for the missables (annoying) and combat system was broken
i'm sure it was great, but it wasn't fun

I've tried, unsuccessfully, to like the entire genre over the past several years! I intently listen and become entranced by something like your Phantasy Star review and think this will be it, it has to be, but it never is. I simply can't connect :(. As for the ones you're mentioning here, I get what you are asserting, that they're missing something, the "je ne sais quoi" that elevates the game to something truly special. I've been looking for it across consoles & celebrated series (e.g. Final Fantasies, P. Star, Chronos, Shining Forces) and have yet to find it within the genre. Excuse the rant, love your videos.

When I saw the box for 7th saga at the start I was like "nooooo!" I get it's a slog and very tough but it's one of my all time faves. Infact it was opening into RPGs, guess it goes to show how different ppl have different tastes

Final Fantasy 13 was the first final fantasy game that I ever bought and I tried so hard to love it and put a whole lot of hours into it. Take a wild guess how THAT went.

I had this issue with NieR. It looked cool, and I got it for a great price, but after a few hours I never went back.
I also have this issue with Valkyria Chronicles. It's just so long for a battle!
Great video as always Johnny. I've actually recorded a HappyConsoleGamer-related video, and I'll be sure to share it when it's done.

7th Saga, you really have to do defend -> attack, every time, or defend -> magic. I liked the challenge of it and being able to pick multiple allies.
Dragon Warrior 2. I tried, but it's such a grind. And a giant world with only the vaguest idea of how to explore it or where to go. The first one was grindy too, but the first one was much shorter. I can appreciate that it was a huge improvement over 1, but I still can't like it. Three was awesome, though, and I don't dislike any of the others.

Final Fantasy Tactics...the plot is great, but between the archaic combat that makes pre-Awakening Fire Emblem look easy: enemies level up with Ramza, so everyone else is underleveled, balls hard job system, you can't cancel a move if you're out of range, no mid battle save, not to mention every guest character's story ends when they join the party (SF3, FE13, Wachenroder, etc have much more fleshed out side characters.) And the translation is either engrish shakspearian, not normal English. To a lesser extent, Bravely Default.

Mine have to be either Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World or Final Fantasy X-2. Dawn of the New World reminded me more of a fan service game rather than a proper game. The original cast not being able to level properly and the way it was written did not feel like a tales game to me, don't even mention having to make certain choices to be able to access new game plus as I consider the grade shop is a staple of the tales series, and flashbacks of things that happened less than 5 minutes ago. X-2 once again felt like fan service and I hated the dress sphere combat.

Lunar Dragon Song. Although I played it through to the end, what a joke that was. I bought it knowing it had a bad rap but I figured critics were being dumb because how can you mess up a great game like Lunar? But lo and behold, they did it... sadness

Guardians Crusade - I remember it being in a display case in computer exchange, it was about £10 more than all the other titles and it was there for months, not really any internet back then and I had never heard of it but I had bought Alundra on a whim and loved that so I thought I would roll the dice. It was probably back in that display case within the week.

Ultima exodus for the nes! It was the first rpg party based game that i got and played and it made me weary of rpgs that were based on a party system, like final fantasy or phantasy star. My purchase of phantasy star 4 changed my opinion about party based rpgs.
Ultima exodus wasn't your typical rpg of grinding and leveling. It is a totally different type of game. I've seen playthroughs of the game and it's a very fascinating game to this day.

Boy, I bought the German big box version of Secret of Evermore because I expected it to be like Terranigma, a fantastic JRPG released in Japan and PAL regions for the SNES. When I first played Secret of Evermore I was disappointed to the point that I cried like a baby because I had just spent 150DM (like 70USD) on a game I hated. It was so tough for me to get into it. That said about two years later I picked it up again and started playing. Eventually I grasped the concept of a little grinding at the beginning of the game and really fell in love with it. The environments were gorgeous and I liked the grim story. I didn't finish the game back then because I got stuck at some point. I kept going back and finally, ten years after buying the game, I finished the game on my first save and I still remember most parts of the story even today :-)
