  • Marcia Franklin talks with Idaho writer Esther Emery about her first book, "What Falls from the Sky," which chronicles her year without the internet in 2009. The two talk about what precipitated Emery's experiment, the challenges involved, and what she learned.
Emery, the daughter of Carla Emery, a well-known back-to-the-land movement proponent, also discusses her 'off the grid' life in the mountains near Boise.

Esther, as a young person who just bought 19 acres only three years ago and am still in the first stages of "struggle" and learning skills while working double shifts to pay the mortgage, I want to say thank you for being such an inspiration and model of encouragement. It might be hard right now but you remind me to find the joy in small moments and relish the satisfaction of achieving my goals one small step at a time

great interview. Love the fouch-a-matic channel. even a city-dweller that lives on grid can take so much away from their videos. Their family's vlogs are so heart-warming. Great interviewer, Ms. Franklin as well. lovely.

This was so great. Esther, i envy you and am letting go of technology a little at a time. I can give it up for about 6 months then i start feeling the same as you did about how if its not posted maybe its not happening. I cant seem to get past that mark. Hearing you in this has definitely helped me understand what i am going through. This was so helpful to me.

Great interview with Esther. I have been a fan of her journey since discovering her from a Seeker Daily video. Since then her and her husband's youtube channel have become my favorite homesteading channel. Then she started her personal channel that has also become one of my favored channels.
Esther's williness to share her journey is great, and inspiring. The unplugging from the internet is a telling story of how important the internet is in this day in age. The dependence people have on tech and internet. I have lost friends because I do not necessarily immediately text them back if they text me. So many people expect others to be on demand 24/7. I am also a Facebook and Twitter resistor and refuse to join those social media sites.
Oddly it is the very internet that Esther unplugged from before that likely has made her (and other modern homesteaders) homesteading experience so successful now. The internet helps link and unite distant homesteaders forming a community of like minded people. This was something the older back to land movement her mom was involved in had troubles with. The disconnection of people from community when they build a homestead was very trying. But with internet the modern movement has built a way for homesteaders to share and help each other either with knowledge or even just moral support.

Lovely in every way. As I move from an on screen personae to a more true identity as a faithful, delightful abiding sheep in a peaceful pasture. . .seeing your glimpse of the other side is instructive and real. Simplicity, silence, Spirit-following are ingredients to a recipe that seems to move from bland to complex flavors of life as I sprinkle the recipe with grace and forgiveness. This interview confirms my journey and adds to my hope.

What a wonderful interview Esther. I've not been following any of the back to the land experience of today, but I stumbled upon the resource in TH-cam features quite by luck. I also stumbled upon your videos with even greater luck. What drew me in was the obvious good nature revealed by five good people of your family. You fit together so well, and your story sings with an equal joy and satisfaction throughout, and that is a treasure of the heart not altogether common in life today. Your children are extremely fortunate to have two parents providing them with a childhood of happiness that will make them strong and loving people for life. For them, you are creating documented memories that will be with them for all their lives, but it will also extend to their children as well.

I've been watching fouch-o-matic for a while, and recently found your own channel. This interview has given me a new appreciation of your life. I lived through my parents marriage crisis. They are now in their 90's. I love to see their love and kindness to each other. In those times of crisis, if people are willing to work together to find those things that brought them together in the first place, they can find a stronger bond then they realized. I can't wait to read your book.

I want to hear more about this anti-existential philosophy where meaning is received rather than constructed (as the existentialists would argue). Is this a Christian thing? It feels to be in the tradition of Henry David Thoreau.

I gave up internet phone cable TV and a perfectly running car. to get ahold of me you had to write a letter or honk and shout outside of my 3rd floor apt.
I read 4 books a day sometimes (1500 pages) and did just things. I rode my bike and/or took the bus or walked.
I did this for over a year until my mother wrote me she was Ill. cancer. so I was forced back to phone internet and car while she was dying to communicate asap with all.

I have been following Esther and Nick on their TH-cam channel and one thing is clear. Living 'simply' is NOT simple. Grow your own food? Sure, but what you can grow depends a lot on where you live. You can't grow whatever you want. And don't expect much from your first crop, either. It takes a while to figure it all out. And 'simple' is almost as expensive as the alternative, at least at first. You have to invest in tools, equipment, and seeds. You have to prepare the ground properly, balance the chemicals in the soil, get the water right, and each kind of plant requires different levels of watering. Live 'off grid?' Now THAT'S expensive. You need some sort of electrical source, but whether you go with solar panels, wind generators, or some other way of making electricity the initial investment costs a LOT of money. And the technology to control the current is not exactly easy for beginners. Heat your home without a furnace? If your home is not already set up for an alternative heat source converting it is very difficult and, again, the investment may cost more than it's worth. If you want to go for it, then do it, but it will take years of preparation and more money than I make.

What the HELL am I watching? Someone's dirty laundry?
First this woman promotes her book,
then she throws her on mother under the bus - calls her a dirty hippy,
then she throws her husband under the bus - calls him a dirty cheating fornicator,
...and that's just the first 3min. Whoa... So glad she's not my wife - unruly disrespectful and harried woman!

    • @caitrappel1532
      @caitrappel1532 6 ปีที่แล้ว

First of all, there was infidelity on both sides of the marriage, and she addresses that pointedly and humbly in other videos. Secondly, she has a deeply complicated relationship with her mother (both in her mother's relationship with the public and her relationship with her and her siblings). If you watch her other monologues about it, you can see how much she vacillates between love/admiration/pride and resentment/regret/confusion when she unpacks her feelings about her mother. This isn't unique to Esther. I think just about everyone has complicated feelings and relationships with our parents and our memories of childhood. That's not throwing them under the bus--that's telling our stories honestly. Esther is a writer and a storyteller. Her stories belong to her and they're hers to share as she pleases.
