    @dexluther It had one. A swinger "Bar" would deploy out of the shuttle in the event of a needed abort. The only problem was you could only use it at a low altitude. In both the Challenger and Colombia, they were simply to high up to allow its deployment.

    @dexluther I guess. But almost any Astronaut of the Shuttle era would say it was NASA's fault. Excessive hubris, they called it.

    All this complexity, extra mass, and cost. Dragon would just use the landing thrusters.

    wow were going back to the way it was in the 60's ..we are landing in the ocean again...i dont get it..

    • @johnhyll8070
      @johnhyll8070 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because a tactic is from the 1960s does not necessarily mean it is bad and inefficient. While landing on the ground is more cost effective, having landing engines and a fuel tank in the capsule could make the capsule more expensive the manufacturer, requires the launch vehicle to be more powerful than otherwise, and could compromise the crews safety during reentry.

    much better the escape tower of apollo 11

  • @ti994apc
    @ti994apc 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Dragon escape system is far safer. With Dragon you only need to abort a few hundred yards away from a chemical explosion. Since Orion is mounted on Ares1 which uses solid rocket fuel, you need to get much further away (miles) to have a chance for the parachute to survive. Also, Dragons escape system can be used all the way to orbit, Orion's cannot. Also the jettison process is added danger, Dragon has no jettison.

      Acctualy the russians build leading rocket engines and at the moment the americans are paying the russians
      to use the soyuz spacecraft to get to the iss. china has manned rockets and so do japan. America doesn't do it better that everyone.

    That thing is huge, and looks much more expensive than the dragon 2. It looks as if the never even seen the concepts Elon has made public. People need to learn how to learn from other people even if your not working together.

    • @blindlemon9
      @blindlemon9 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Joe Schutt . The Dragon 2 is designed for low-Earth orbit and transfer to orbital space stations. The Orion is designed for deep-space exploration. That is the reason for the markedly bulkier and larger design of the Orion. The Dragon abort system is a pusher system. Orion's much greater mass makes a puller system far more efficient and accurate in bringing the capsule away from danger. You are trying to compare apples and oranges. Learn before commenting, for god's sake.
