- NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, an Expedition 37 flight engineer aboard the International Space Station, demonstrates how astronauts run on the COLBERT treadmill in a weightless environment. Station crew members exercise for at least two hours every day to keep fit and to prevent the loss of muscle mass and bone density that occurs during long-duration spaceflight.

You can still 'fall' as in you lose footing and the springs pull you to the treadmill. But a fall ending in scrapes and bruises? Yeah, not really possible up there.

well, astronauts absolutely HAVE to exercise. because of the zero g environtment, they lose a lot of muscle and bone mass really quickly, so have to work out to stop that muscle and bone reduction. on earth we have gravity.
Yea the gravity requires so much strenght to overcome that you get better workout than the astronauts do just by sitting by computer all day and taking a walk to your local convenience store once a day to restock on snacks.

Personally I feel like I'd go insane in that space station. I'd want to feel the fresh air and environment around me. Any ideas to implement virtual reality headsets to treadmills with headphones of 3 dimensional surround sound? I feel like this would be great for the long term astronauts.
they are already living in a 3 dimensional space.. if you show them video of things falling.. it would give them vertigo. we have to build artificial gravity with spinning capsule, (ring would be better). but the whole point of going to space is to observe physics in micro gravity.. so.. we just bring them back before they get hurt too much.
I'd love to be up there! sure I'd miss the environment and fresh air, but the fact I'd be on the space station would make all that missing things go away. The only thing I'd miss would be my dog...
That's why you couldn't be an astronaut, these peoples mental strength is about as good as it gets. You'd also be busy practically all day every day, they have so much work to do all the time. Plus you can't really beat the view.

The ISS travels at 17,150 mph, so if she jogged for 30 mins she travelled 8575 miles which is a third of the Earths circumference or 327 Marathon's.

For those complaining about the Windows OS. Most windows operating systems are very reliable, especially old ones who got improved over the years. The reason most operating systems fail is the constant modifications the average user makes to them(installing software, surfing the internet), if you only install the necessary programs and don't connect it to the internet then the os isn't going to fail easily.
Familiarity breeds resentment. Most people hate Windows because "it's the thing to do."
I'll take pragmatism over being "edgy."
I can tell you everytime I update Windows 10 something goes wrong with my computer lol. Windows 98 might be the answer!

Cody Raskin LMFAO. It is sort of odd though. Just about every video they show there are those dead pixels. Yet, they seem to have many different cameras on board. So it seems cameras are affected by the micro gravity environment.

+Naomi Gary So the implication in this comment section is that high energy ionising radiation (ionising radiation is a specific type of radiation that can strike and interfere with the atomic structure of something from a camera detector to your DNA, that's what gives a person skin cancer) has struck the CCD (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge-coupled_device) of the camera and damaged the receptor for that particular pixel. So if you look at the vid carefully you may notice pixels that just don't show up properly, which create spots on the footage. These are dead pixels, because that part of the CCD in the camera is no longer functional.
For example, if you look at a frame around the 0:53 mark, on all the green surfaces you will notice white spots. Those are dead pixels. Whether they are actually caused by ionising radiation or simply from ageing camera equipment is a topic of speculation, although I am sure people in this comment section will have some strong opinions....
Maybe they should add a variable speed fan that worked alongside the treadmill for a better experience. :3
(Incidentally that is why I don't use treadmills, since the best part of running for me is feeling the air.)

There is medical supplies, and I would assume everyone has training in first aid ( I know they do drills for if somebody is incapacitated during a space walk) So they would do alot of the care on station.

You can see the harness is really critical to keep her down enough to make contact with the treadmill. Her posture would compress her lumbar if she was in a gravity-based environment. And her arms are so light they flail about and don't stay by her sides. Fascinating for a small woman in a zero gravity environment!
Ice noticed everything in the space station looks fragile and always lots of exposed cords, tubes, and wires. One would think the engineers would take cues from Star Trek. No, not being funny.

Each block of the ISS was made on Earth separately, launched into orbit and just assembled there.

Oh man...why everyone complain about that laptop and windows OS etc... you can't understand that they don't need to play battlefield 4 in space, so they probably don't need some super ultra extra performance? And what is wrong with windows OS? Windows are the best know user friendly OS in the world and most of the programs run on this OS... I have relly no idea why they should use linux or something else...

Rofl, like, have these kids even used Linux when they make these comments? These guys are astronauts, not programmers. If the treadmill program breaks, you don't want them spending 6 hours figuring out how to re-install the package and all the dependencies. You want them to be able to point and click. They are astronauts, they have better things to do than to troubleshoot a stupid Linux program.
I have a programming background and I stopped using Linux because it was a waste of time getting anything to work the way I wanted it to. I have better things to do than to play around with various Linux packages. Most things on Windows install and work with the click of a button.

I designed a special bodybuilding weight set for astronauts. It consists of a bar surrounded by 2 other bars. To use, select how much weight to lift; then, workout. The weights are actually just a bar that is held by an electromagnet. I would suggest; of course, a channel slim enough to prevent the bar from flying away.

She is running on a wall, relative to the lights in the ceiling, next to a bathroom, the white object behind her, behind that is another exercise machine, the little blue bar that can barely be seen in the background, and that is above the coupla, the famous window that looks onto earth where we get all those great pictures from orbit. Franklin Carrasco No the reason periods happen is cause once a month an egg is released to be fertilised in your uterus. If it’s not fertilised, then your uterus lining sheds hence the bleeding. Your uterus lining still sheds in space but I am assuming because of no gravity, it doesn’t exit your body like on earth (like you said)...I am assuming the female astronauts are either on birth control or use the same suction thing they use for peeing to extract the blood out of their bodies.
@@tweakheir6093 Fluids behave differently in space though...so the blood and tissue maybe wouldn't stick to the tampon. There's a video of Hadfield squishing a wet towel, all the water stays on the towel or on his hands.

in space you're pretty much just falling, so if you were to go skydiving you'd have the expirience of being in space i think, the only this is; in outer space you would be in a station that as big a 2 soccer fields falling with you xD

Not really. As well as physical fitness, they are also tested for their mental health and fitness. If environments like this would pose an issue for them, they wouldn't make the cut and wouldn't get the job.

You mean the "Hyperbolic time chamber" ,I think. ---- That machine is ment to increase gravity in multiples.... which unfortunately could hurt or, kill people depending on what setting and who you are. Up there in space, it's opposite, more weight can be lifted than on earth, I think.
No he means the gravity chamber which had controllable gravity settings, from 0G to I think in this model 100G but we never saw it go further. he almost crashed into the sun tho so dat G chamber is stronk
The only way you could imitate gravity would be to turn the ISS around quite quickly and I hope I don't need to talk about all the risks that would cause when trying to connect it to the supply ship.

Congrats I guess... I love space as well, by the age of 6 I had already surpassed the knowledge my parents had about space and had started teaching them, haha. The internet can be a wonderful thing... As long as you don't live in the countryside where the internet speed is beyond slow and makes you want to make an angry phone call... Why don't they focus on getting existing internet speeds into the countryside and not making faster and faster speeds in the city? Annoys me a bit in case you hadn't guessed.

NASA relies on technology that is tried and tested. That means old technology. As long as the job is done, they have no need to upgrade. With new software, there are always new problems, problems that they don't need when they are up on space. Here on earth we want speed but up in space, all they want is reliability. Maybe, in 5 to 10 years time, they may upgrade the OS. Or maybe not. I have no idea of the current software requirements of their programs. I am pretty sure they have it all sorted though. Pretty sure.
Actually they would love to upgrade their systems but the space station's core systems are built in a time where digital technology especially was far less developed. In order to upgrade it they would have to replace large portions of the physical space station, which simply isn't going to happen with the budgets that the space station is assigned by the governments participating. However in this specific case, yes there's no need to have a special Linux OS or something fancy for a treadmill and a old windows OS does fine

In space things don't float "up" they float in whatever direction. However, the sweat, like water, sticks to her skin via surface tension. This works on earth too, just not as well

I first became aware of it in 1996; there was a "vacuum treadmill" in development, which early tests were showing to be more effective than the bungee harnesses. Must have been too expensive...

the sweat probably beads to her skin due to cohesion, which also happens on earth, yet if she were to wipe her face off after running in space, the sweat droplets would float away in different directions or clump together due to cohesion from the lack of gravity.
