what is it with video game commercials prior to 2007 never being any more than 360p in quality

Televisions weren't commonly in hd until 2009, 360p 360i 480p and 480i were the most common resolutions for a decent few decades

great but people can still rip their old dvd/dvr/vhs recordings in better quality but i guess no one cared enough

With a max resolution of 480i for most TVs in this era, remember that some people also used antenna signals for their TV, and most of the uploads of the commercials happened at a time when computers had really shitty encoding and storing high-quality video was not for the unequipped. 1gb then was NOT like 1gb now and videos were big files.
