when I put the column into the 51 I set up my seat, closed the door and rested my arm on the window. Having done that I then raised the bottom of the column and lowered the steering wheel. All G M steering wheels are interchangable so if you want tilt you can still have that wheel.
Yes sir, the exchange is a bitter pill. Make yourself a button 👍There has to be some cool thing to do... a little backlit skull or Ford logo or whatever floats your boat !
@@garyscarstuff om my Ol'Beater, I cut and modified the original truck steering. Used one universal, to the 1987 power steering box. The front suspension is '87. But I have 3 Chevy tilt steering columns, they are too bulky. I like the one you used. What is it? 60s Camaro or Firebird stick?
Those tilt columns have 4 bolts in the pivot base that get loose. That is where the play is. You can tighten 2 of them without taking everything out. To do all 4 is a not bad you have to pull the upper part off, which requires removal of the pivot pins. They make a tool for that, but I get a machine screw the right size and use my dikes to lever them out. I like the idea of cutting off the shifter boss. That may open the possibility of using a column shift column in the VW.

Thanks Larry. I've go more playing to do before I get it just where i want it. Then I will decide where the seat goes....

Backlit button... Cool idea! Thanks for the comment!
Slot the holes, with a flat plate on top. That way you can tweak it to your liking
Great idea, thanks!
Good Choice
Thanks!

Take your time to get the steering wheel just right for when your comfortably seated. It doesn't take a very long drive to notice it isn't right.
Good point Glen, thanks. I've also got to keep that in consideration when I decide the seats final mounting points.

Thanks Michael. I may well have a go at fixing the tilt column (I have nothing to lose) and I can still use the Trans Am wheel I like with it.
@@garyscarstuff If I had mine for the VW I would do a video. I fixed a ton of them when I worked at the independent shop.
