This is far better than a Fiesta. The Ford ecoboost 1.0 engine is troublesome. They have had serious long term reliability issues with these engines. The stupid cambelt arrangement in oil is also an issue and very expensive to replace. These belts have to be replaced every 10 years which may be ok for the first and second owners but subsequent owners will be left with a big bill for the change (if the rest of the engine lasts that long.) I think Suzuki cars represent the best value for money in the UK market. When you consider that they always top reliability surveys, are very safe, loaded with kit and well made for the price you pay. When I change my car it will be a Suzuki. No other make comes close overall.

I have a 1ltr swift. I bought it new in August 2018. It's now done 72,000 miles. It's not a motorway car, short motorway journeys are OK though. It's a great town car. It defrosts itself quicker than my kuga with an electric windscreen. I had one issue while under warranty, gear cable detached because the driver didn't use the clutch. It was fixed in a day. It did 49 mpg when new, it now does 47.8mpg. First suzuki I've owned and I will buy another. It's quite basic on the inside but very easy to drive. Great torque at low revs makes it as good as a diesel when moving off. I use it in a professional way as a driving instructor. The car has withstood all the extra rigours of novice drivers. I was unsure how it would perform as a learner car but I'm really pleased with it. I now want to see how many miles I can clock before any major component wears out.

Good review. I hear the Swift's are very reliable. This factor is not to be sniffed at. Mother's 11 year-old Fiesta just packed it in. She may have been unlucky, but a friend who's a mechanic said the Swift's are bullet proof. For me reliability if the single most important factor in car ownership. Were I rich I would be less paranoid when it came to reliability.

I have just traded in my 2014 Fiesta for a 2019 top-spec Swift. Similar engine, 1.0 L Ecoboost to same-size Boosterjet, but my SZ5 has with mild hybrid, too.
First impression, after a week? The Suzuki is better in almost every aspect, and so much more fun than the softer suspension of the heavier Ford. It's an absolute hoot to drive on country lanes. On motorways, not much in it, perhaps the Ford a bit quieter at higher speeds. I can't tell the difference between the gearshifts, don't understand the comments in this video at all.
I was bored with my Ford. The Swift has rekindled my driving enjoyment. It also looks good, which no one could claim about a Fiesta.

Great review, but wish you had tested the more characterful 1.0 turbo. I own one in Sri Lanka, and despite our rough roads , it has not missed a beat in nearly 2 yrs of driving. I just love its engine, chassis and that wonderful mini like upright, curved windscreen that gives fantastic visibility.

All cars are money pits; the bigger the brand the bigger the money pit. This is one of the least costly in the class to run OVER TIME and not for a quick review as it will prove to be more reliable. Generally Japanese built cars are more reliable. The other rivals mentioned from 0:33 have suspect reliability. I would not consider them. I was impressed by the Suzukis I drove. Fiesta is also great to drive though.

I too bought the CVT as it is effectively the only version sold in Australia anymore.
Intitially little slow off the mark, but goes very well on the motorway sitting 1500-2000 at 110 km/h, [our speed limit], that doesn't match the review comment of needing high revs.

I'm in the USA and Suzuki cars always seemed to capture the old school
Character of japanese quality and attention to detail that has long been forgotten by the big three japanese makers honda toyota and nissan. I wish they would return to the us. If mitsu can survive here suzuki can thrive with the jimny and their newer cuvs.

I have had my Swift a year now. It is better than the Fiesta in every conceivable way. Firm ride, where the Fiesta was soft and 'wallowy', ditto the steering, and the fun factor is through the roof. [The caveat is that my Ford was the 2014 model, and they may have improved since.]

I sat in a Swift recently, liked it, although the Kia Rio felt a bit nicer inside (and similarly priced), and the doors on the Swift felt really light. It's surprisingly roomy inside for a small car. Surprised that so many people would choose the manual transmission over there. Here in Australia 90%+ would pick the automatic, and manual non-performance cars are hard to shift second hand. Different market I guess.

The Swift is a car that lacks something. Engine, handling, fine. But you don't sit comfortably. Everything is somehow not 100% ideally adjustable to the individual. The suspension is too firm. You can feel every bump. Shallow potholes are a nightmare. The front bumper is too far forward and you can scratch it very easily if you are on a slight incline. The windshield is very reflective and so are the silver rings in the speedometer display. In the sunshine you hardly see anything. Because it reflects so strongly. The instrument cluster is inclined too horizontally, so that when you sit higher you have no optimal view. The consumption is 51 mpg (urban and motorway combined). Gear shifting is easy and parking is a real pleasure. However, the car is almost overloaded with five adults.
