  • I used my Traeger earlier in the evening and it worked fine. Later that night I started it to do an all night smoke on some Boston Butts. After it lit and I put the butts on it was rolling more smoke than usual so I decided to shoot a video of it.

This happened because the chamber where the pellets are burned wasn't emptied properly. Either you didn't let it burn off in shutdown mode, or it didn't fully burn off and you didn't empty the chamber, or you turned it up to a high temperature and it started loading lots of pellets into the chamber, then you turned it down and didn't empty the chamber.
When you get too many pellets or too much ash in the chamber, the heater can't ignite them properly and they get heated instead of burned. When they burn you get clear blueish smoke. When they are heated without igniting, you get this heavy white smoke. When it starts doing that, the sap turns to vapor, and when it reaches the right levels it finally ignites explosively like this.
To prevent this happening ALWAYS EMPTY THE BURN CHAMBER before starting or when you turn the temperature down.

You should add this to your videos description so people can understand why it happens.

The gases exploded, not the pellets. Open the grill while you're in start up mode

This just happened to me on a Trager 34 pro. I cleaned out the smoker and firebox before starting a long smoke on a brisket. Let it run at 180 for about 6 hours kicked it to 200 for 2 hours and went down to bump it to 225 when i noticed that the temp was around 110. Hopper was still full so i figured the pellets must have wedged and created an air-pocket, preventing the auger from moving any more into the box. I tamped the pellets and it started smoking again. Everything seemed fine for about a minute, then the smoke started rolling really thick, like this video. I was walking over to open the grill when it exploded open like this. It looked exactly like this video. Was crazy. I had to finish the brisket off in the oven and use a fire extinguisher to put out the pellet fire in the smoker.

Literally just happened to me on a long brisket cook as well. It shut down automatically at first….so I turned it back on and 10 minutes later, it blew up. Crazy

That happened to me yesterday. Was smoking a brisket and got the LER error code. Thing was smoking and the next thing you know ‘BOOM!’ I had to check my britches but no one got hurt and the grill seems to be okay. Only the 4th time I’ve even used it so it may have been operator error.

same thing happened to me this morning. I got the same LER error code (it was cold) so i rebooted grill and turned to smoke mode. about 5 minutes later.... BOOM. It bent the cover all the way back past the safety latch on the right. The hinges may have bent a little because my cover isn't flush anymore. I'll try to power through this brisket, but im a little nervous.

This is basically a backdraft. The pellets are just being burned into this flammable white smoke instead of actually burning with oxygen. So then, when the smoke gets a chance to mix with oxygen… kaboom!

i’m going to say that was a rich fuel fire (most likely a lot of sawdust mixture within the pellets) that was demanding more oxygen, once it got a little bit, it created a mini backdraft.

I found this thread because my Green Mountain just did it to me. First time user, but, too, followed instructions. Temp report has been all over the map, too. Was doing a 225 degree smoke, went out to check and it was at 140. Then I turned on a wifi profile that had the initial temp target of 150, but instead it cranked the heat to nearly 500. Set it to 225 manually and now it’s falling. Could be user error. I’m hoping that as the pellets that were in the pipeline burn off, it’ll settle down.

@@briankraft4478 I think I may have solved my issue. The power went out a few times my first smoke. Either it was that the unit was in the sun and hot, or there was a short in the power cord (mine's the one with an AC to 12V DC converter). In any event being shut off 3 times and restarted, I believe, ended up with it having 3X as many pellets in the fire pot. This led to some of those pellets spilling out, some catching fire (raising the temp way high despite the temp gauge being set lower), possibly blocking the fan feeding it oxygen, and shutting off. I let the grill sit overnight then cleaned out the excess pellets the next day and re-tried a smoke. Everything went OK. I've still got my eye on the unit to make sure it doesn't power down unexpectedly, but most of the issues seem solved. For now!
