  • Rlaarlo sent me a new 8-ch radio to test and review. I've spent about 4 hours using it before I even started to make this video. I wanted to understand it well so there were no surprises later!
    First, the radio looks familiar because it is already on the market as the HotRC CT-8a (gyro-enabled receiver not included but available separately). Buuut this one has Rlaarlo firmware and quite honestly, a very compelling feature set for a crazy price. Even the spare gyro-equipped receivers are roughly DumboRC money. That's rather impressive, yes?
    So yes, Rlaarlo CT8a and HotRC CT-8a look the same because they're from the same company. But don't let this put you off; Rlaarlo is all about their cars - and what a year they've had! Their new CT-8a 8-ch radio system is running Rlaarlo firmware and is ready to install in your favorite RC model from any brand. Oh, it has a gyro AND mixing AND multiple power sources.
    It looks great on paper! But I'm typing this with an injury after testing the system for about 24 hours now. So, let's see what it's actually like to use.
    If you're convinced, buy one here:
    Rlaarlo CT8a Radio:

    Extra Receiver:
    rlaarlo.com/products/8-channe...
    (These are affiliate links to buy directly from Rlaarlo. If you use them to buy, I'll get an 8% commission, at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!)
    Notes:
    - I haven't been able to get the gyro to work correctly yet. Still working on it.
    - not all 18650 batteries fit. I cover this in the video.
    - make sure you don't buy their DumboRC receivers if you want extras, as they won't work with this radio.

    been using this radio for 2 weeks with a Flux RX and a Muraco. I rate it. really responsive. swapped wheel for metal radiolink style with small spacer to keep away from main body. tiny round N52 magnets are the best thing for adding a button top to a flat top battery

      @FrankvdBerg 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RCTNT yeah. AA does work for half an hour. And it cuts off to soon. But i now use 2s lipo. And that makes a big difference. Only thing i found is that the receiver is a bit big so it doesnt fit the Arrma reciever box. But i put it on its side and then it fits. But offcourse the giro doesnt work that way

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @FrankvdBerg hm yes that's also a challenge. I think I might look into conformal coating for the board on my second receiver, which arrived 8 days after I ordered it. Then I won't need to use the rx box and water won't be an issue. For the price, I'm still happy. But I do think AAs are so poor in this thing that they really should suggest lipo as the recommended power source, so people have that expectation. I'll touch on this again when I do my radio system round up later this year.

      This or DumboRC with X6FG receiver (it you want a gyro). The nice thing about the Rlaarlo radio is the gyro is adjustable. I wish it wasn't so thirsty on power - this radio is otherwise pretty much perfect for a cheapish one.

    Hi Craig. I've been wanting to purchase this transmitter, able to adjust the EPA for the steering? As compared to the LDARC CT? Both are budget friendly. Able to help me out? Thanks. And as always great video with awesome reviews. 😊

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for waiting for my reply. Been a busy day! Ok, so the EPA is definitely adjustable on the Rlaarlo radio (it's really a HotRC CT8 with Rlaarlo firmware and a gyro receiver) but my biggest gripe with the radio is the battery life. It's otherwise a fine machine and if you get it onto a decent quality 18650 or a 2S Lipo, you're golden. However, I'm not familiar with the LDARC CT, but it looks amazing. If it does mixing like the Rlaarlo does, then it may be a better choice. But if it doesn't, the Rlaarlo here will be far superior overall, IMO. Good luck with it, they're both pretty decent by the look of them! (And don't forget the FlySky GT5, that's a brilliant radio and additional receivers are really cheap if you just need 2 or 3 channels (FS-A3) or even if you need 6 (FS-A6 or FS-i6, among others). Cheers

    Hey mate looks and sounds good. Im interested as Im now up to four vehicles in my collection and would to not have to worry about taking a controller with me for each one. Im still very much fresh in the hobby so dont know a great deal.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It probably varies. As you can imagine, I receive a lot of goods from hobby places, both purchased and sent for review. I have trouble with couriers where I am too, and given I'm semi-rural, we need to go to the post office to get our stuff. Postie doesn't come here. For what it's worth, all the Rlaarlo stuff I've received to date (7 or so vehicles, multiple parts and accessories) have all been waiting for me at the PO. But I don't know what carrier they chose to use, sorry Mick.
      I will also add that if the cars are adding up and you want to use a single radio, this may not be the best choice unless you specifically want a lot of channels, gyro and mixing. There are two other models to consider that will be a bit cheaper and offer better battery life because they're not powering a big LCD screen (which is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but battery life will suffer due to the extra power needed):
      1. FlySky GT5 with BS6 Rx (has gyro): asiate.es/aff?l=150074&i=76070 (aff. link, FYI). Additional FS-A3 receivers are $10 or $15. Gyro receivers are roughly double that. This is my favourite radio system. I have 4 of them. 20 model memory, button, 3-pos switch, 2x dials, good on battery.
      2. DumboRC X6: www.amazon.com.au/KAIMIO-6-Channel-Transmitter-Receiver-Controller/dp/B0C4T6BPN8 - comes with a gyro Rx and additional non-gyro receivers are $15 to $40 depending where you buy. Unlimited model binding, but no memory, so you set trims each time you bind a new model.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What do you need to know? I can give a few pointers:
      Install it flat if you intend to use the gyro. Orientation doesn't seem to matter otherwise.
      It follows the universal schema of steering on 1, esc on 2, then subsequent channels as marked on the controls.
      Battery voltage sensor cable goes into the balance lead on the 1st and 3rd (2s) or 1st and 4th (3s) ports.
      For absolute maximum radio range, ensure the last 4cm of the antenna wires are straight, upright, at 45° from horizontal, 90° from each other - that's an upright V, basically. If you don't need max range, simply keep the wires separate from other cables in the car and try to keep the last few cm straight.
      Hope that helps!

You do need the foil top on it to make contact with the battery lid though. This is a design oversight.

      I think we covered the trigger grip thing. You can always remove it, but I tested it on camera (unless I cut it in the edit?) and didn't have a problem with reverse. It sounds like removing it might be the way to go for your preference.
      Trim: it didn't occur to me to check that. I've since used this radio in two other models and it still hasn't come up, but I can definitely see how that would be annoying if you use it regularly. Thanks for noting it.

    How is the range and can you use a rc similar with it

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They claim up to 350m, but at an educated guess, you'll only achieve close to that if you mount the two receiver antennas at a 90 degree angle from each other, both upright at 45° from flat in the vehicle.
      Can you use an RC similar with it? I don't understand that question, sorry. You can put the receiver into and rc car that has an ESC to power it.

      I bought this exact one. The color change works with the remote control, but it doesn't save the setting when I turn it off. What am I doing wrong?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @santommaso6740 nothing wrong, that's how it works. Doesn't have memory. Changes based on switch inputs. Without a nicer led controller (I don't know of any), that's how it's going to be.
      Could design a better controller with arduino though, I'd expect. You'd make a simple sketch (program) that would sit in-line with the LED controller and intercept the signal (using the servo.h library).
      It would save that state to memory. It would work by sending the inputs to the original LED controller to change it to the last mode you used when it's powered up. Then any changes you make get saved.
      I haven't used this LED module before, but let's say it has 5 colors you cycle through. Maybe there's a mode setting for on, blinking, strobe, chaser, too - I'll ignore that for now. You want the third color most of the time, let's say that's blue. 2 presses from when it's on gets you to blue.
      This module will read your two presses and save that state. If you make no further inputs on that channel, next time you power up the car, it'll wait a set amount of time, and then send 2 button presses (PWM signals) to the LED controller, changing it to blue. Easy enough!
      I'll put a sketch together for you. Give me a few...

      Note this line:
      const int numColors = 5; // Number of colors available - change this to match the module
      You change that number 5 to however many colors there are in the cycle.
      How it works:
      1. Setup Phase:
      - Attach the servo objects to the appropriate pins.
      - Read the last saved state from EEPROM.
      - Send the necessary button presses to set the LED controller to the saved state.
      2. Main Loop:
      - added a startup delay of 2 seconds to give everything time to come online.
      - Continuously read the PWM signal from the RC channel.
      - If the button is detected as pressed, it sends a button press signal to the LED controller.
      - The state is updated and saved to EEPROM.
      Adjustments Needed:
      - Pin Configuration: Ensure rcChannelPin and ledControllerPin are connected to the correct pins on your Arduino Nano.
      - Button Press Signal: Adjust the microsecond values in the pressButton function to match the requirements of your LED controller.
      - Color Mode Handling: If there are additional modes (like blinking or strobe), you would need to expand the state handling and possibly add additional button press sequences.
      This sketch should provide a basic framework to get you started. You can expand and refine it based on the specific behaviors and requirements of your LED controller.
      Download the software here: www.arduino.cc
      AliExpress sells Nanos. They're really cheap.

    Flat topped 18650s are not made to be used like bump-top 18650s.
    Flat tops are made\sold to be spot welded into casings.
    You can't complain about a manufacturer not speccing their device to run flat top 18650s, because that is using the 18650 in a manner that is not supported by the manufacturer. Flat tops are not designed to slot into battery compartments. You can't expect a manufacturer to spec their products to use batteries in configurations not intedned by battery manufacturers.
    Those Samsung batteries suck by themselves anyway, they are used in large banks and thats why there is no button on top.
    You're using the wrong kind of battery and no manufacturer us going to design their products to use batteries improperly. a spring in the + terminal area would put uneven pressure on a normal 18650. It's unnecessary for users who use the correct type of battery.
    The end.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Point taken. Thanks. I've been playing with 18650s for years and that didn't occur to me. It's therefore probably worth mentioning, given many folks probably will make the same oversight. I still think a spring in the top would be a simple cover-all, but fair enough. You're right!

    Mate if you like mixing i think you owe it to yourself to grab an MT12. Spent 2 hours setting up a full fat crawler, which is actually a lot more fun than it sounds. ELRS with a multi protocol module - truly one radio to rule them all. That being said 40USD is practically giving the CT8a away.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm using mixing for some comp crawlers with various sanwa and futaba radios but I think my new one to rule them all is my flysky noble nb4 pro. 12+18 channels on a master & slave setup to run my 8x8 with its various bits and pieces and then a trailer with the slaved receiver to run all its features too. Numerous channels get eaten by mixing but it's a thing of beauty when it's all configured correctly!

      @@RCTNT You know what, maybe a video explaining how you did that would be in order. I've been reading for some time now that using sbus or ibus or PPM you can expand your available channels beyond whatever the transmitter/receiver say they're capable of, but have never figured out how to do that. Maybe you could show us all how that works in practical real world terms? 12 + 18 sounds phenomenal, and I'd like to know how to do it. I bet others would too.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sure. I'll do a video on the nb4 pro and we'll cover this. Like the SCT comparison series that will end in a single video to tie them all together, I'll do something similar for radios. Am gradually building a library!
      Short answer is kinda two parts:
      1. iBus will expand one port to numerous. The more channels, the higher the latency as there's more signal to process to differentiate each channel.
      2. Mixing takes channels and often several, at that. Your 18 Ch system might only have 4 to 8 ports on the second receiver and that's enough. The rest of the channels are real, but virtual, being 'boxes' for the mixing functions to assign the individual roles that are then combined on yet another channel to achieve the desired mix.
      PS. I forgot AGAIN to put your name on the end of the video, sorry!! It's in the description but I clearly need a better process. I think I've solved it now - the credits are next to my logo on my editing master folder, and I use the logo at the end of every video, so I'll see it now. Thanks for bearing with me and my forgetful head!!

      They (did) sell the receiver for this radio, I bought one and it's good. I'm guessing you bought the DumboRC receivers. I'll add this note here so others know what you're upset about in particular.
      I'm sorry you've had a bad run here. For whatever it's worth, the receivers you've got will work with most DumboRC transmitters, so you've at least bought a broadly compatible receiver for future use.
      The radio receiver you bought says its for their 1/10 on-road cars, which all use a DumboRC radio system;
      rlaarlo.com/products/6-channel-receiver-including-light-system-control
      The receiver you needed was available on their site (I bought one myself) , but I've looked for 10 minutes now and can't find it! Has it been removed? I'm not sure. I was going to link it here for anyone else wanting to avoid your situation, but I simply can't find it now. Weird.
