Knee Replacement Massage

  • Is massage good after knee replacement?
Massage is one of the best ways to reduce muscle pain, improve fluid exchange, and desensitize a painful area.
If you have ever bumped your elbow you know that instinctively you have the urge to rub it. That is because rubbing a site of pain will reduce the intensity of the pain.
After a total knee replacement your body is going through a healing process. You are probably not walking and moving as much as you normally would, so massage can be a great way to help the lymphatic system do it’s job.
How do you massage after knee replacement?
After a total knee replacement you can massage your leg in lots of different ways. The rolling pin massage is my favorite, but you can also just use your hands or anything else that can gently glide over the skin or roll to reduce abrasions.
Another reason why I prefer the rolling pin to your hands with lotion is because the rolling pin can be performed without lotion and is less likely to pull or tug on the skin and incision.
Lotion may cause complications with possibly burning or infection if there is an opening on the wound or around the wound site.
Applying pressure from low to high is a great way to facilitate the lymphatic drainage and help move fluid back into your body’s natural system.
Can you use a heating pad on a knee replacement?
In most cases a simple heating pad on the upper thigh or calf can be a great way to reduce pain. Most heating pads for home use do not get hot enough to cause skin damage, but it is always important to consult with your surgeon before using a device.
How long does it take for the stiffness to go away after knee replacement?
Stiffness, pain, and swelling can often last up to 12 months following a total knee replacement.
Be patient! Understand that your body will take time to heal. Focus on movement, sleep, and nutrition as ways to improve the healing process.

On my second replacement in three years. I said I would never do it again. I’m one week in and it has been the worst week in my life. Can not sleep, totally constipated and pain off the chart when hospital medication wore off. I was expecting those things but not depression. Medication seems to have cause it always about tree in the morning. Asking yourself is it worth it. These videos gave me hope tomorrow would be better. Funny thing the next was just a little bit better. I will get through this just glad we don’t have three knees.

Thank you Toni for another great tip! My surgery is this Monday, the 26th, and your videos have been a god send! Am planning on doing lymphatic massage and will use the rolling pin every day as you suggest. So appreciate you and your videos. We who are having knee replacement are SO fortunate to have you guiding us...Thank you so much!

I went back to my surgeon and told him what was happening and his words were "oh well, that's the way it goes for some people - nothing I can do". This was a top rated surgeon whom I trusted. He turned out to be terrible. Still suffering.

I’m 9 weeks post TKR. Discovered your channel just recently! Every video has great and useful info! I wish I had this info before my surgery. The pain is intense, physical therapy is hard, when you’re in pain! I could hardly focus on the exercises the therapist gave me! I soon found that I wasn’t taking enough pain medications! I didn’t want to become dependent on the pain pills and instructions weren’t clear! The pain meds also make you constipated, so you have to take a stool softener! This has been much more difficult to get on top of than I thought! I go to physical therapy 2 x week, walk my block with a cane and I’m still not back to work! Thank you for providing this great resource!

I had the same thing happen to me. I take pain medication everyday because of Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis everywhere. I've taken a very low dose and haven't taken more in 14 years. I'm afraid of becoming addicted as well. I took a anti-inflammatory medication for a couple years but in the long term they are not good for your kidneys. So I stopped taking my pain pill and took the Surgeon's instead not realizing the dosage ( mg. ) I was in so much pain it was crazy. I still need the other knee done. No way would I ever do it again. I finally figured it out and started taking the anti-inflammatory again quit his pain pill and added another half to what I take daily and it was all I needed.

I have an extra rolling pin ice never used for cooking. 😂 I'll use that. It's not wooden, btw. Thanks! Just had a Mykoplasty TKR 3 weeks ago, had NO HOME HEALTH PROVIDERS COME TO CHANGE MY DRESSI6OR START PT WITH ME BECAUSE THEY'RE SCARED OF COMING TO CHICAGO FOR A PATIENT.
Sorry, had to vent as I'm a home healthcare RN and I go into dodgy/shady neighborhoods constantly.
Anyways.. . aside from the usual hideous pain SP surgery and limited mobility, the pain is tolerable and I actually am working with PT now finally. I did look online and asked colleagues to send me info regarding immediate PT to do right after surgery.
BTW, PLEASE DO YOUR PT EVEN AT HOME! I PROMISE YOU WILL FEEL AMAZING. ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY, had meniscus surgery on other knee and after 3 months of steady and regular PT I feel really good
OK, did y'all see that? Do the PT religiously!

Had pain in the front of thighs before kee surgery (both knees).
Thighs got pins and needles then went numb after walking.
Same after surgery infact worse for a few weeks.
Rolling pin helps but the more i regain movement and strength rhe more numbness returns.

I am glad you are here as well. If they are small like a grain of rice it may be some scar tissue around the suture. Either way, lumps and bumps are common and should normalize with time. If you are allowed to start kneeling you can watch some of the videos on this channel about kneeling on the couch our your bed. That pressure will help range of motion but it might also help soften some of those lumps.
