Great affordable vinyl option is a higher end vinyl shower curtain. I found a very neat curtain with frosted dots on clearance at my local grocery. It was about 8 gauge.

In a pinch, I went to the dollar store and got their zippered vinyl pencil cases. Of course I was limited to the size however, when you add fabric it makes the project bigger. I not only got the vinyl, I also got a zipper. I would cut the vinyl to the size I wanted and could also use the zipper in that project or another.

I made so many clear vinyl bags with fabric tops, for my granddaughter’s items used @her daycare, such as snacks, lunch, etc.. I too started out with thinner vinyl, but found it to be very wrinkly and not as smooth and pretty, so I then started to use a much thicker vinyl. Love all your tips, Vanessa!

Thank you Vanessa, especially for the part about ironing the vinyl. I’ve sewed with vinyl before, making pouches and even a three pocket (made of vinyl) sewing bag to take to classes. But I didn’t know that you could iron the wrinkles out of it. TFS!

I just decided to sew myself a fabric case for my mp3 player, and i wanted to give it a pvc window to use it without taking it out of the pouch, and this is the first video i found. This might sound weird but the way you spoke in this video really helped me focus and take in what you were saying, as opposed to loads of other videos I've seen where the audio is calm and quiet and makes me fall asleep lol. Thanks for being so clear about everything in this vid!

I just started machine sewing some face masks for the teachers at a local school for the deaf. They have vinyl windows in the masks so the students can lip read.
Your instructions about stitch length are clear and outline the reasoning so well, I was able to avoid some terrible and costly mistakes. Thank you.

Thanks for these tips! You can find teflon presser feet for any model sewing machine. For the most part, you only need to know if your machine is low shank (most modern machines are) or high shank and they just snap right on. The teflon foot you showed is available for as low as $6 or $7. They also have regular roller feet AND teflon roller which is like magical for these types of projects. I'm headed out to get some vinyl now!

Check for vinyl in the fabric remnant bins at either WalMart, Hobby Lobby or JoAnn's. The pieces are generally large enough for just about any project I need, and paying only a fraction of the price for 8 gauge vinyl. Can't wait to get started on a project bag!!! Thanks so much for the great tutorial, Vanessa!

I love working with vinyl! Often all I do is buy it from Walmart - they usually have different gauge vinyl for covering tables, etc. (I usually buy in bulk and it can take me up to a year to go through it all). I tend to buy several different gauges at once when possible. I used to tissue paper until I bought my non-stick foot & needleplate for my Janome sewing machine - still use tissue paper occasionally.
I also make a point of washing my vinyl first and then sandwiching as you do & ironing it - faster and easier than using the hairdryer, especially on the heavier gauge vinyl.
    Love your tutorials ❤️

Excellent video. Great tips for sewing with vinyl. I do find the thinner the vinyl, the more it sticks to my machine! Last vinyl I bought is very thin. Gives me problems, especially sticking to the machine. I purchased a Teflon foot, so no problem there…just sticks to the base….

Vanessa, please warn anyone making a luggage identification tag to make sure to place it in the bag, not outside where just anyone can copy it. And if you are including a street address, leave out the city and ZIP code, otherwise you may return home to find your home has been burgled. If providing a phone number remember to include your country code.
