      SuJean B I can’t remember who it’s by, but there’s a video on TH-cam on how to sew a zipper in a bag or an inside pocket of a bag. Mom taught me how to put a zipper in, & she showed me that there’s a brand of zipper that comes in a thin cardboard-type covering, & it has very simple, easy to follow instructions on how to put a zipper in. She swore by those, & now I do, too! I bought a zipper that was that brand just to get the instructions, & I’ve kept it in my sewing box all these years now (she does, too!).

    I really like the new look the fusible vinyl brings to the zippered pouch. The fabric with the grid lines stitched on it does look cute! I also like that it now is easy to clean by just wiping down. I think I will make one that i can throw some make up in for my purse. So thank you for illustrating the fusible vinyl, didn't even know it existed!!

    I'm using iron-on vinyl to make a reusable shopping bag. I also used a medium weight interfacing on the wrong side to make it stand up.

    • @ushmasoni9623
      @ushmasoni9623 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I'm thinking to add fusible interfacing too. Have you first added interfacing and quilted it then add iron on vinyl or have you first added iron on vinyl then added interfacing??? Thanks in advance

    • @JaimeDornanLady
      @JaimeDornanLady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ushma Soni I’m making some of those, too. I would use fusible interfacing that wouldn’t need to be quilted, & then do the vinyl. That way, you wouldn’t risk melting the vinyl by adding too much heat at one time/point of ironing.

    Hi, you make everything look easy and approachable. Thank you for helping us be able to attempt projects that we wouldn't have otherwise. I'm going to make my own seam binding for some newborn items that I'm going to make, and maybe a laminated bag for my iPhone. What can you tell me about PUL fabric vs laminated fabric? As you say laminated is not for babies, is this where you use PUL fabrics? For that age group? I ordered 1 yard haven't decided what to make, probably a bib or wet bag got any ideas for it? What have you sewn with both, either? Thanks again for helping us to be creative and sew up great crafts so others can benefit. I am going to make a couple of crib sheets for my grand son's baby not born yet. Thank you! How long have you been sewing? Your family sew while you were young? What motivated you to be so. Creative? You must have had some type of education, either at home or school. Share with us.your story. : D

    Wouldn't sewing lines through the lamination make it no long that great at being water proofed? I mean its like puncturing holes in a raincoat or umbrella.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes, this project is about making it more water-resist...just like a raincoat. It's so nice to be able to wipe it down as well when you need to clean it!

    • @HappyNoodleMom
      @HappyNoodleMom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @hotrockgoddess, right but I was just thinking of it as PUL fabric that is used to make cloth diapers, and of course what I was taught was the less holes you have to sew the better. So if you are putting a wet bathing suit in it, its not going to keep the water in the bag as well as if it didn't have holes in it. You are right about the polyester thread though.

    • @AloneInTheGarden
      @AloneInTheGarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Noodle Yes, I make cloth diapers and wetbags from PUL. PUL is not water proof, but rather water resistant. If it becomes saturated, it can leak through. Typically for something you'd be using for bathing suits, the vinyl would be on the inside anyway and not the outside. Similar to how the fabric side of a cloth diaper or wet bag shows outward, and the PUL is the inner lining. I'm sure you could definitely make these that way. Although, I wouldn't go crazy and sew a bunch of lines down the middle like she did for something I would be using for a bathing suit, but normally I don't have issues with my wetbags leaking from the seam unless something is absolutely soaked and is dripping a lot of liquid into the bag to where it's pooling. I think these bags were probably only meant to repel water/dirt etc from the outside. But they do make seam sealing tape that you can use to add extra water barrier :)

    • @profkanine
      @profkanine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can apply nail polish to the seam line to help if you need it to be more resistant. Nail Polish is very versatile

      I was thinking about doing the same thing, or using a clear vinyl table cloth. You can get that stuff pretty cheap, & even some at the dollar store! Or get end if the year clearance sale vinyl pool items! However, I think they would be easy/good to use for making something semi-waterproof, they wouldn’t be fusible, so there might be gaps in the waterproofing, like she mentioned. I don’t know if there’s anything you could use easily to actually fuse that kind of vinyl, without the expensive stuff, something that would show, or without melting the vinyl. If anyone knows a way, please fill us in!

    This is super cool! I never knew this even existed! Thanks Dana!! :) I had a question. If you laminate both sides of the fabric to make a pouch, when u attach the zipper will you still be able to iron it flat using a press cloth and how easy is it to sew?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Yay! It's always fun to learn about a new gadget or technique. I didn't laminate both sides of the fabric. The zipper pouch actually has two layers of fabric---an outer fabric, and a lining fabric (you can watch that video here: th-cam.com/video/i1AsfZRYlRM/w-d-xo.html) So I lined the Right side of each of the fabrics, and left the Wrong sides just normal. And I don't think I used an iron after sewing the pouch. But if you needed to press something, you could always use a press cloth (dishtowel) over the top, so your iron is not touching the laminate directly. - Dana

  • @lblincoe2094
    @lblincoe2094 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this waterproof in the sense that you could use this fabric for cloth diapers? I haven't been impressed with the prints I've been able to find in laminated fabric and have decided I'll just make my own so my choices aren't so limited, but for this particular use, functionality is much more important than aesthetics and I need to be sure it's waterproof!

  • @deechampion6514
    @deechampion6514 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    When you're cutting out the iron-on vinyl, why didn't you place your fabric right up to the edge of the start of the roll? It looked like you wasted the first inch of vinyl. It looked to be in good condition, so you could've saved yourself some cutting out too. Maybe I'm more thrifty than most but can"t see the point in throwing money away.

    • @kimmityler5631
      @kimmityler5631 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suspect its because it would have the tendency to curl up because that edge is often folded oddly in the box and dealing with it while trying to be fast in a tutorial isn't worth the tiny bit of vinyl saved :) I definitely find it easier to use the really curling pieces if you apply them to a big piece of fabric *then* cut.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, yes, in theory you can do that. But you need to read the info on your particular laminate or vinyl product first. Many are not recommended to use on baby items, or things that will go in your mouth. So just research that out first. Each product can vary, so there's not an overall blanket statement on that.

    • @JaimeDornanLady
      @JaimeDornanLady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Easier thing to do (& very eco-friendly!) is what my mom used to do with mine. She always put my sandwiches in a Tupperware or Rubbermaid-type square sandwich container! My sandwiches never got squished between my books in my book bag, they stayed super fresh, the bread stayed soft instead of drying out, if anything leaked, it didn’t soak my sandwich, & the container is easy to REUSE & wash/disinfect in the dishwasher! You can also put hot water with a tiny amt. of bleach mixed in it now & then to disinfect it if you feel the need. I LOVED that my sandwich didn’t get squished! If your child isn’t good about remembering to bring their lunch box/bag home, that may not work for you. However, the other good thing is that those boxes can be found very inexpensive, & they even have them at the Dollar Store, sometimes in different colors and/or designs on them!

    I would use my food sealer to make it stick together rather than sew it together. ( at least on the bottom and sides ) Just heat seal it with the fabric turned inside out and the plastic between the fabric.

    So with every stitch aren't you defeating the purpose? Water could get in the stitch holes and possibly ruin your fabric if you can't get it dry?

    Do you think you can make a video to show how to sew a long wallet with zipper bag and card slot?

  • @chrisboyd3626
    @chrisboyd3626 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have laminated several things, one being a zippered pouch. It was super cute...for a very short while. As you grab your pouch or do anything that makes it bunch up or wrinkle, it begins to get tiny tears, little rips, and eventually holes in it. Did not last an entire season. Did you experience this as well?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. Bummer on your pouch. I can see how that could happen. But I haven't experienced that (but I also haven't made something larger than this oversized zipper pouch). I do like topstitching lines like I did here in the video because it helps keep those layers together. - Dana

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I don't have a tutorial...just some basic instructions here in the video. I just held the two pieces together (the vinyl and the fabric underneath) and sewed them as if they were one fabric. You could also do a basting stitch (a temporary holding stitch) around the two layers to keep them together. Have fun ! Dana

    Hi Dana:
    Thanks for another awesome video. What are the dimensions to this pouch?

  • @Macrinahope

    Thank you for your tutorials. Very helpful. How would you make something waterproof, not merely water resistant?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well sewing items will never be truly "water proof" since the stitching in the seams create small perforating holes. And on a zipper pouch, you also have a zipper, which is an area for small bits of water to seep in. So this project isn't meant as something you would submerge in water for a long period of time, obviously. For something totally waterproof, I think you would need something fully plastic, like the way an underwater iPhone case or camera case is made. But I haven't researched that! - Dana

    • @Macrinahope
      @Macrinahope 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I thought there may be a way to laminate a project after sewing it together - minus the zipper. Anyway, thank you. Your tutorials are very helpful.

    When you added the decorative stitches does it compromise the water repellent effect of laminating the fabric?

    Whenever you make a mistake follow Julia Child’s example. She would say I am so glad I didn’t that now I can show you how to handle the mistake. I usually hear her voice, I’m so glad that happened. Saturday Night Live from the 70s was the best. Dan Akroid did skits on her. Ppl are concerned about a recent SNL skit about Kelly Ann, if they would look back to the 70s, they would see Chevy falling down in his skits on Gerald Ford.

    Asking as a sewing novice- is there a reason you’d laminate fabric instead of buying PUL? More pattern options, perhaps?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, with laminating, you can have endless fabric options! You can turn your favorite fabric into a more water resistant fabric. I love that.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to check the info on the laminating material you use. Some laminates are not recommended for food products because it contains BPA. Do a google search and you'll find more info. - Dana

    i was going to make something with wipable surface with adding layer of vinyl now i am thinking i can just vinyl fuse for wipeable side. my question is can the project still be thrown in to wash if only one side is vinyl fused and not the rest.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t tried washing it… I worry that it might separate from the fabric a bit? or melt if placed in the dryer? I’m not sure… I would just check with the brand of fusible vinyl you are using and see what the packaging says as far as care instructions.
