    Well I’m shocked right now. This is the first time I’ve ever seen an accurate video on what it really cost to live in the Philippines. I lived over there for two years a couple years back and I’m currently back in Chicago. I married to a Filipina and we also have a house over there. Visit there twice a year on vacation to see her family.
    That being said I’m well aware of the cost of living in the Philippines. But for some reason every time its discussed on TH-cam people are giving the most ridiculous requirements. First off, if you live in the city it’s going to cost double then if you live in a village. And of course each island is going to be slightly different depending on its population. Most Americans are thinking they need thousands of dollars a month and that’s only because they plan on eating out at nice restaurants multiple times a day and going to the bar every night and living the same life that all they did in the United States. So really comes down to understanding the difference between needs and wants. I myself grew up in Maine and have always lived a very simple life. So when I’m in the Philippines its hard for me to spend $500 a month. So foreigners telling us that they need $3000 in USD is crap. Again, good job on the video.

    My cousin married a British man when they retired they preferred to live in Davao rather than in the UK.its more cheaper and he become a Filipino citizen.they lived on their pension every month and enjoy their life together. They just go back in the UK to visit the children and relatives.

    NEVER buy a western style car, or pickup in thePI's! You can buy a Bongo, with aircon, and a motor, or three wheeler, for less than half what a western ride costs! Multicabs are another option, even more affordable than Bongos, but smaller! A diesel Bongo, with a versatile rack, will pay off in extra cash made hauling for family, and friends! You, your wife, and maybe the Mother in law, can ride in comfort(aircon), while anyone else sits in the bed! An extended cab would be especially sweet! My wife and I built a single story, but nice, house on Mindanao, half an hour from Pagadian, and 3-4 hours from CDO(Cagayan del Oro). Wet(and dry) markets are way cheaper than the mall! And they have better, fresher, food! Don't be koriput! Buy a nice, western style ice chest at S&R, and rig it so you can secure it in the back of your vehicle! S&R, is the Pilippine's Costco, and prices are close to American, btw! Personally, I eat more local type foods, especially seafood, and avoid rice, and coke/pepsi! Viola'! Budget keto diet! Since I retired middle class, with a Union Pension, I'm doing fine by myself, but my wife has a Union Laborer's card, and we keep her dues paid. Good for Making extra money while we're Stateside! Any non party animal type of expat can indeed do well in the province, on $1,000.00 per month! I'm doing better than that, but we choose to put family members through school(several have already become paid members of Philippine society), and invest in shares of crops her extended family grows. Personally, I find it immoral to do more than double our money, and that allows the family to grow it's business endeavors.Expats who spend like drunken sailors, whether they can afford to, or not, run the risk of being robbed, kidnapped, scammed, or any number of fates! If one's ambition is to bang bar girls, and party constantly, then Cebu, or Angeles City are better choices for residence, IMHO! And one should still play their cards close to the vest! A middle class, western pension, of $2,000.00-$5,000.00 = 100,000, to 250,000php! Kidnappers won't understand you gotta be alive, to collect your "fortune" every month! A nice job in the PI's, might pay 70,000php per month! A DH(domestic helper) in the PI's can earn 2,500-4,000php, with room and board included! If the wife and I hire a single mom as DH, we will feed and clothe her kid(s), and pay any school expenses as well! We have friends doing just that on $2,000.00 per month, and they have SAVINGS!The Husband takes half a dozen kids, and several adults to Jollibee, or MCDonald's several times a month! All the friends, and family eat Sunday dinner at their house as well! It's a good life!

    I live in the Philippines and I don't spend over $200 a month. I achieve that by living as much like a Filipino as possible. I could do better. Once I build my own house, I expect my cost of living to drop to $100 a month.

    Expats who are on a budget and lives on a $1k pension a mo can only afford to live in the province or small town. If you want to live in Makati, Manila, Quezon City or any cosmopolitan city in the Philippines, you cannot live a comfortable life on a $1K budget. A small condo in a nice area is easy P5 million to buy. Decent but not high-end. Condo rental at Rockwell for a 1 bedroom is P100K a mo. A house and lot at the Forbes is easily P300 million low end. It is not always cheap to live in the Philippines. You can chose to be simple or extravagant like anywhere else. A 1000 sq ft apt in Manhattan can easily cost you $3K a mo to rent but for that money, you can live in a 5000 sq ft mansion on a 5 acre lot in Mississippi.

    It is more expensive to live in the Philippines than in any Western country. You can live cheaply in the Philippines if you want to eat rice and baguong every day,,, and at night sleep on a mat placed on a wooden floor, But if you want to have the lifestyle we have in Western countries, then it is more expensive to live in the Philippines. Yes, you can go the the market and purchase meat or fish that has been visited by million of flies. The only things cheap in the Philippines: tobacco, alcohol, and sex.

    Great informative vid Brian and Maricel! I have spent like two years in the Philippines off and on now, spread between three trips from 2005 to present. All I can say is if anybody is even thinking of retiring there. Be sure to make at least one longer trip there first if not more. Some people love it like me, and others hate it. Don't be the guy that sells all he's got and moves there on a whim. Just to find out it's not for you.

    A reminder to those Male Foreigners who will choose Philippines as a place to retire with 800-1000$ or more monthly pension:1. Avoid Filipinas that are highly educated and sophisticated. They usually hold a stable jobs in the cities, wears heavy make ups, sexy dresses and expensive jewelries they usually speaks English with fluency- these ladies are indeed young and beautiful. But are not into old guys! "Do not be deceived by their I love you". They are only after for "green card" and your money.. 1,000$ = 54,000 Pesos. that is a huge money in the Philippines. With that money- you can rent a beautiful 4 bedroom apartment, pay your electric bills, water bills, enough monthly groceries etc in a small city outside metro manila or Cebu city... You will have a decent life.2. Choose a Filipina who doesn't have those qualities (less educated-did not finish university MOSTLY these ladies couldn't speak English with fluency, doesn't like wearing make ups and expensive dresses or jewelries, don't have stable jobs, a perfect description is the Filipina above, She is simple yet beautiful and decent woman. However BEWARE with a lady who would say she is the "breadwinner of the family" because this means that you will be financially supporting her whole family also....

    • @mukbangkids7106
      @mukbangkids7106 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are ridiculous. How can you even say that to our filipino women.How can you tell the foreigners to avoid highly educated or sophisticated women. Dont you know that some of them, before they even graduated have worked hard as well to gain their degree. Some of them were working students and just like Maricel, they experienced working in fast food chain, nanny, house helper etc just to finish their studies. Some of them dont wear make up even because they are already confident that they can carry out themselves with their BRAINS. And, Whats wrong with make up anyway? Some of them are BreadWinners meaning theyre responsible and selfless because they help their family. Single mom i believe you have missed to think the other side of those women who are highly educated.
      You dont have to criticize your own. These foreigners are experienced and they definitely know what they want without you saying that. If i were to advise them Id say that Filipinos are naturally loving and hard working. Before they even settle down they need to really get to know their woman and even the family too by spending spend time with them. Foreigners arent idiots they can see whos real and users.
      I know a lot of highly educated people/ friends who are singles, who are opposite to your descriptions, who are living in the cities but are simple but elegant and who have got good and decent behaviours too. Dont say anything as if theyre all the same next time.
      Thank you.

    How can you afford Visa charges on $3-$400 a month? You are quoting living in poverty wages. 3k for an apartment? You are talking about living in a dump. No A/C, no hot water and like your place, no paint on the walls. To live well, as I do, up to Western Standards my wife and 2 younger children live on $4,200 or 220k pesos. I have health insurance but we don’t have a car. We don’t need one, I don’t want to drive here. My nice 3 br, 2 Bath is $29k. Yes I’m in metro Manila which is more expensive. If you only have $1k a month stay in the west and get a job as a Walmart greeter because your life here will suck.

    Yeah it all depends on choices. I'm in the south and have a 2 story house with aircon for 12000 per month, motorbike is 5000 per month, internet 900. I shop at the markets and buy meat and cleaning supplies from the supermarket. Cost me about 500 pesos per week. Phone credit 400 per month. Going out drinking, eating with friends, movies and such rarely go over 3500. Another 600 for fuel and oil change for the bike once a month and I'm living and eating better than back home. So yeah around 22500 a month and usually have spare out of that. If I didn't socialise or go out as much it would be down around 18000.

Package deal $1000 with insurance. Once born watch out milk diapers school fees cloths furniture for baby cant have mosquitos in house so house repairs.

    BTW great video. I understand there are those here that don't want you to generate bunches of videos a day but, for me, I would play it by ear. If the opportunity arises to do more videos that are your interest - i would do it without hesitation.

    New Subber here... I appreciate the simplicity of the video, no BS and no colorful antics, straight to the point, sadly a lot of YTers forget the importance of simplicity, about getting the message across the simplest way possible, and yes it all depends on how you live your life here. to each his own.

    The cost of living videos rarely include all the costs of living. The cost of medications, the cost of a computer, the donations, The budget I lined out on LinP3 had about 20+ items and came in about $1000 a month. I am married and I was not trying to cut corners. I could get by on $400 if I were to try to cut corners.
    If you stay with family, you will be helping the family.
    You can live well in the islands but the life style will be different.
    Thank you for sharing.

    • @jimclaire7996
      @jimclaire7996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How about the use of the Internet, the cost of medications, the cost or replacing the computer, the cost of visas and transportation to and from the islands, cell phone, the cost of donations, and I could add maybe a dozen more categories to the list that most of the cost of living lists do not include.
      Brian, I enjoy your channel as the videos are fairly short and to the point. You do not beat around the proverbial bush. I see your channel is growing fairly fast. God bless your efforts. You are a generous couple. Please keep up the great work.

    It's only cheaper if you're willing to give up some comforts. Can you live without a car? Live in a smaller place? Live in not the best location? Eat basic food? Not spend money in restaurants and bars? Live without air conditioning? (I can't. My electric bill was $120 for two window units). Do you have a reliable income? If not, I wouldn't live there. In some ways it's cheaper but in other ways not and it all depends on what you're willing to give up. I think condos are cheaper in Kansas City than they are in Cebu.

      @frankcalvez5867 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment. Who wants to give up comforts? I was living in Quezon City in the slums. But at least you need around 600 USD if you want to eat normal Street food. In Makati when you rent a condo and want normal foreigner comforts you need a minimum of 1500 USD. I am living at the moment outside Manila, still same. I dont have a car, riding a scooter and hired one Maid for my 2 kids and we eat absolute normal food. 1500 to 2000 USD you need under the new administration and Train1. All is getting expensive after the tax reform of the new president. At the moment 1KG potatoes on the market almost 2.50USD, Chilis KG almost 25UDS, Meat KG 5 USD, 1 Apple 0,50 USD etc. For a Family with 2 kids you need to earn 1500 USD or you sitting on the street. We are leaving soon the PH because of the expenses. Living in Europe is much cheaper, safer and more comfortable than the PH. Philippines are nice but too expensive now.

    Good vid some one telling it like it is cost of living in the philippines i know because i live there. If you live a little out in the province the rent for nice house 2 bed 5000php month. Electricity with aircon fridge electrical kitchen appliances 2000php per month 280php month for water. 10000php a month for food has you eating good Filipino food so to round the cost up 20000php per month which is one third of my monthly income. Twenty thousand peso that is about $526 AU a month. But you could live in a major city some where and be paying 25000php a month RENT, so how much does it cost to live in the philippines the cost is entirely up to you.

    Thanks for your video and some comments here. I have just come up w the idea that we should consider the PH to retire in. My husband being retired military reservist and just retired fr UAL, we have been considering OKA for a long time bc I am half Fil-Japanese. I still have my Japanese Mom living in the PH w my sister but I have no idea what we can afford w our money. Even though properties are a bit less expensive than where we live right now, I sure do not want to buy a property around BGC bc everything else over there is priced like here in the States, or shockingly more! I would like to build my own house in a nice, clean neighborhood w a sizeable lot for my garden and animals, w maids and other helpers, but I do not know if we can be safe over there, let alone the amount of money we have to spend for all the comforts that we have been used to here in the States. I do not even know what cities to consider. I hope you will make a video of what places expats can consider living in based on how much they want to spend. My Mom owns a business and lives in Mandaluyong but I sure would not want to live anywhere near there!
    And one more concern for me is the work ethics of Filipino workers over there. Both my Mom and my sister are senior citizens managing their building (and nobody else) and they could not find contractors or workers who are honest and decent enough to work w to maintain the bldg. They seem to be crooks who do not know the value of establishing a relationship w the customer in order to have a steady flow of job. And their work is below average, which is the source of stress for my family there. How do you start building your own home if this is what you will find over there? I left the PH when I was 18 yo, so I am kinda out of touch w the present culture and the type of workers I can expect.

    Great info on monthly costs in the Philippines. I go there a couple of times a year if I can was last in feb and stayed for 3 months and heading over there again in November this time maybe stay there till march 2019. Am in the uk and want to allow about £1000 a month for accom and living expenses. What part of the Philippines are you in as I have mostly stayed in Mindanao but this time plan to travel around a lot. Just found your channel and subscribed.
