The theories behind MBTI personalities actually go way deeper than mentioned. The framework talks about the tendencies of a person due to a particular functional stack of the theorised 8 cognitive functions. 4 out of 8 of the before-mentioned functions are known as the “conscious stack”, while the other 4 will be part of what are known as the “shadow functions”. So with that, how are there only 16 personalities? Well, the cognitive functions are paired into twos (referred to as the axis), meaning if one of the cognitive functions is in your conscious functional stack, the other one in the pair must also be in the stack as well. Below are the 8 cognitive functions, paired according to their respective axes:
    Decision-making (known as Judging) functions:
    1. Introverted Thinking (Ti) & Extraverted Feeling (Fe)
    2. Introverted Feeling (Fi) & Extraverted Thinking (Te)
    Information-gathering (known as Perceiving) functions:
    3. Introverted Sensing (Si) & Extraverted iNtuition (Ne)
    4. Introverted iNtuition (Ni) & Extraverted Sensing (Se)
In short, below is a summary of what each cognitive function is responsible for:
    Ti- (subjective) logical consistency, truth-seeking
Fe- social harmony, peace, social etiquette
Fi- (subjective) moral values, beliefs, desires
    Te- systematisation, efficiency, fixing problems
Si- maintenance, comparing past to present, memories
Ne- brainstorming, opening up to possibilities
    Ni- abstract meaning, pattern recognition
    Se- 5 senses, (physical) action
In the conscious functional stack, usually the top 2 functions are what the user tends to use to interact with the world/ make decisions. The top 2 functions (1st known as Dominant, 2nd known as Auxiliary) will consist of 1 Judging and Perceiving function each. The 3rd function, known as the Tertiary function, is known to be a weaker function for the particular user, but nevertheless still a function that is used occasionally. The 4th function, also known as the Inferior function, is the function that the user is not the best at, and usually is used in a rather simplistic/ less sophisticated manner than those who have the same function in the Dominant or Auxiliary slot. Sometimes, the user might repress/ refuse to use their Inferior function and over-rely on their use of their Dominant function. This is because the Dominant and Inferior functions belong on the same axis, like playing a game of tug-of-war with each other, creating a distortion in the balance of usage of the functions. This means the Auxiliary and Tertiary functions belong to the same axis, and given the smaller gap within the functional stack, do not create as huge of a distortion in balance of usage as the Dominant and Inferior would.
With that, there’s actually a slight incomplete explanation of the P vs J in the MBTI type. It more accurately shows whether the user prefers extravert-ing their Judging function (which makes J types J types) OR their Perceiving function (which makes P types P types).
With that in mind, let’s compare Sylvia (INTJ) and Nina’s (INTP) conscious functional stack:
Sylvia has Dominant Introverted iNtuition (Ni), Auxiliary Extraverted Thinking (Te), Tertiary Introverted Feeling (Fi) and Inferior Extraverted Sensing (Se).
Nina has Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti), Auxiliary Extraverted iNtuition (Ne), Tertiary Introverted Sensing (Si) and Inferior Extraverted Feeling (Fe).
Totally different functional stacks even though the only difference in their type is in the J vs P! As mentioned above, Sylvia will prefer to extravert her Thinking (Judging) function, thus Auxiliary Te, while Nina prefers to extravert her iNtuition (Perceiving) function, thus Auxiliary Ne.
This is the general gist of cognitive functions, I hope I explained it in a digestible manner. If you have any doubts, feel free to ask me, I’ll try my best to answer.
Btw Nina, I love you so much. Sincerely, a fellow INTP

    • @illuminare6251
      @illuminare6251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Ryan Sylvia I’ll use Nina and Sylvia’s types as examples for this!
Nina is an INTP. She has Dominant Introverted Thinking (Ti). Ti is all about seeking truth, logical consistency, forming webs of logical explanations of the world. This makes INTPs analytical, logical, strong rationalisers and great at providing strong cases for their arguments in debates. This is why, stereotypically, INTPs are portrayed to be excellent in Maths and Science (though this is obviously not going to be the case for all INTPs, as there will be some who struggle in that field). This Ti logic is backed up by Extraverted iNtuition (Ne). Ne is expansionary in nature, allowing Nina to be able to see theoretical topics from multiple viewpoints and brainstorm many ideas quickly and effectively (these ideas may or may not be feasible in physical reality). This makes INTPs creative and open-minded, constantly wanting to take in new information, expanding their repertoire of knowledge. However, given Ne’s broad-based nature, this also makes INTPs indecisive, much more so than others, as their Ti is constantly analysing logical explanations behind the seemingly never-ending possibilities.
Nina’s tertiary function is Introverted Sensing (Si). This function makes INTPs value remembering important (logical) details when learning, such that when required, they will find it easy to recall and pull out important information for use. Si also makes INTPs surprisingly sentimental, easily feeling nostalgic about past events. Finally, Nina’s Inferior Extraverted Feeling (Fe) is, like mentioned above, used in a simplistic way. The most common manifestation of an INTP’s Fe is to stop themselves from “unloading their barrels” on a stranger when they hear something illogical being said, choosing to preserve the social cordialness over starting a heated debate. When repressed, INTPs may choose to actively reject social norms/ behaviours, citing that there is “no logical reason to do so”. Inferior Fe also manifests in the form of sudden outbursts of anger, where INTPs might break the social cordialness to express their anger.
Moving on, Sylvia is an INTJ, who has Dominant Introverted iNtuition (Ni). Ni is about pattern recognition, finding abstract meaning, and piecing together seemingly unrelated concepts. This makes INTJs visionary, excellent at understanding even the most abstract forms of things, extremely driven by inspiration and great at understanding what is beneath the surface. This Ni is backed up by Extraverted Thinking (Te). Te prizes systemisation, efficiency and problem-fixing. This makes INTJs great at finding effective solutions quickly, delegating jobs for people to get done, organised, decisive and structured. This makes INTJs great leaders, who are inspiring individuals, capable of commanding and delegating tasks to the correct people to fulfil a singular vision pictured. However, this also means that INTJs tend to be stubborn, impatient, blunt and loathe incompetent people (this is where the talk of INTJs being arrogant comes from).
Sylvia’s Tertiary Function is Introverted Feeling (Fi). Fi makes INTJs unique individuals, as they do not let external factors influence what they like or do not like, or personal moral values be bent or swayed. While INTJs are stereotypically portrayed to be cold, Fi actually makes them passionate, and great at putting themselves in other people’s plights. Finally, INTJ’s Inferior Function is Extraverted Sensing (Se). The most common/ simple manifestation of Se in INTJs is valuing concrete, physical actions to be taken to produce a result. When repressed, INTJs might find themselves struggling to “do it”, being caught in their own heads and not providing enough physical action to make changes around them. Inferior Se also manifests in the form of recklessness, where INTJs might sometimes get themselves into life-threatening situations.
This is all of course very brief and stereotypical. I would like to mention that it’s all generalised- MBTI is talking about tendencies, not defining who we are as individuals. While I only mention the conscious functional stack, it is also very clear that all humans use all 8 cognitive functions, but each and every one of us has a different preference. I hope this helped! :)

I'm INTP-T (Logician) same as Nina! And also in the Purple Group with both of you guys!!! That's my original result since 2 years ago when I first took the test, but I've gotten result of INFP-T (Mediator) in the Green Group, and it doesn't suit me at all. I realized, just like Nina, I got it because I didn't put effort into really thinking it through and also I was going through a really hard and dark time at the moment so it wasn't really myself. And now that I'm back on track and really put thought into the test, I got my original result back. It just shows me that hardship can change people but only to a certain point. One way or another, once you heal and move on from it, you're gonna be back to yourself again.

Your MBTI can change over the years. It’s good to take the test annually. In the past when I was a teen, I was an INTP, then now I’m a ENTJ, at times INTJ. Can’t decide because I get energy from the company of others, but yet I enjoy and crave time alone to think and analyse new info. J now because my work requires a lot of organisation, planning and structure and so...that became part of my personality.

Thank you Sylvia & Nina for sharing openly with us how you relate to the weaknesses in the personality types. I also find that this personality test is very accurate and it is very good for us to assess ourselves where we're at. But I don't think we should just stop there and allow ourselves to be defined by one of these 16 archetypes. Reason because all of us are UNIQUE individuals~! It is good to discover how we have been behaving till this point, and it is up to us to decide who we want to BECOME, and what changes do we want to make. For myself, there are times that i have been insensitive to the people around me, and i decided to work on that, to be more mindful of the things i say / have said, and i think it is all part of our personal growth journey~ That's why there are those whose mbti personality type changes along the years :)
PS: Thanks for making this great video!

Myer Briggs should be taken with a time limit... As when we take much time to ponder a question, we will start to process with feeling and thoughts of the person. Results can be affected by it and start to feel "maybe i am this... i should be this... i think i should be this"... Most personality tests, they want to know what is the 1st thought that comes to your mind... so take the test with a time period.. say 25 questions should limit to about 10 mins..
Also MBTI should be taken not more than once within 6-9 months to maintain accuracy...

I guess what prompted the change was also accepting the fact that most people weren't like me (then) and I slowly tried to find a balance. Even though now I'm under the yellow group, some purple traits do pop up occasionally (e.g. when I went through a breakup, my default mode is to analyse what went wrong and how to improve on controllable factors the next time, rationalising is a good coping mechanism LOL)

I believe the traits are all on a spectrum. That is probably why Nina gets different results when she does it on different occasions. Personally, me and my fiance are on almost complete opposites of the spectrum. (That's why we identify with the Ryan Sylvia relationship) We are constantly working on closing the gap. Its not going to merge one day, but I am sure that knowing ourselves better through such self-evaluation helps us to improve ourselves.
    .
As an NT, I think its important for us to learn to be in touch with our feelings. (Unless you are 100%T, 0%N - which is not possible) E.g. Sylvia seems to be strong, logical etc. But Ryan/Nina have mentioned that you do have your softer side. I believe you have your emotional side. We can't change the way we make our decisions (T being T), but you can be more aware of your F side of it. (Listen to your heart too before letting your head take the lead).

Actually to get the most accurate result for MBTI, you shouldn’t be pondering/thinking too much because the result of the MBTI test should be your natural state. It should not be answered when you are thinking through different scenarios because then you are not answering based on your natural preference, but you will be answering based on the situation you are putting yourself in. (It is just like how you treat your closest friends vs a stranger). The results will be off. So a tip is to be in a quiet environment, read the question as it is, and your answer should be the first one that comes to mind (do not give politically correct answers, there is no right or wrong answer when completing the questionnaire)

The MBTI test is very useful but not the most validated in the psychological field. This is because it was created by a daughter and a mother without professional checking although they did it based on Carl Jung‘a Psychological Types. Despite this, it is still undoubtedly the most popular personality test although not the most reliable, valid or comprehensive. It is still quite accurate lah haha, and very fun also.
But the most valid personality model in psychology is the OCEAN model, which I recommend if y’all want to try another personality test. Not as fun but more comprehensive haha. It is more valid because it was created purely based on statistics of multiple questions and people’s tendencies in answering those questions, it started with information to theory, not theory first.
