- Peterlee the place to be or is it anymore let’s have a look around Peterlee and get a taste of its history as well as the here and now. From the town center to abandoned buildings and shopping closed down to cheap houses … #cheaphouses #abandoned #property #exploring #peterlee #northeast
Originally from Peterlee (Hatfield Place) moved away long time ago, parents and brother burried there still got family there. Was shocked and saddened by this video. I mean Peterlee was never exactly beautiful but looked like a post-apocalypse nightmare in this vid. The town center of old had some real character and proper old fashioned shops. Hintons grocers, Fine Fare was there before Asda it was such a big deal when it opened, some nice menswear shops, Sparks bakers, there was a fancy old department store where Sports Direct is now. Used to sign for benefits at Ridgemount House. The old post office and the little ponds where I ended up soaked on my 18th. Many happy memories. 2023 should be better than the 1970s not have gone backwards so much. People deserve better than this. Thanks for posting this Terry - nice to be connected still to the area and SAFC. Enjoyed your white Cadbury's creme egg vid too😂
Cheers mate much appreciated and yes it’s very sad to see take care pal
Oracle Estates, a Surrey based company, owns Castle Dene shopping centre.
After they hiked up the rent prices, many shops struggled and closed down as you show in this video.
They refuse to reduce the rates, they'd rather have empty premises 😡
Absolutely crazy that mate
@@Madsoutandabout isn't it just, it's bloody criminal mate!
The town centre could be much more pleasant and vibrant if Oracle (oh, the irony of their name ...) stopped being greedy.
Great videos mate, I've just found your channel and slowly working my way through them 👍
Its not just the north east terry with towns like this ther all over the country its a crying shame what this country's becoming keep theese going mate so enjoyable.
Thanks mate and yes very good point
starting to get through all these videos Terry great banter with you and Keano .
Cheers mate 😂😂
What a great chat with Len O'Donnell, bet he could have told stories all day.
Class mate he’s a great guy
Nice to see Len O'Donnell there, former leader of the old Durham County Council. Did you know he cycled solo from Los Angeles to Washington DC back in 2002?
Did he that’s great mate
Never had a good work to say about Peterlee in over 40 years - always will be a shit hole to myself (well most of it), but have some excellent memories of the ITeC and Peterlee College - had some great times with some mates from here. The state of the place is shocking, and I just think people around our area are *NOT ALLOWED* to have nice things. So much scum around, and it's getting worse year on year. Best thing about Peterlee is the *WAY OUT*
Massive respect to Len O'Donnell - a true gent!!!
He’s class mate
Thanks for the video and your friend John. For all the local info and meeting Len near the end of the video.
Cheers mate thanks for watching
Excellent, expat Geordie, Canada. I have a friend who lives in Peterlee.
My sister does mate cheers
remember going to Sunderland away games and the travel club coaches picking up at Peterlee.
Cheers mate 😂
I'm originally from Peterlee, sad to see it like this. We used to live in Thirlmere Rd and my grandparents lived in Hatfield Pl after moving from Keswick Rd. I remember when ASDA was Fine Fare.
Yeah it was back in the day cheers mate very sad
The shopping centre reminds me of Stockport town centre
Cheers mate
When English Heritage lists a building, they should stipulate that someone should be responsible for its upkeep. If they insist it stays, it should look its best.
Yes very true mate
The Apollo Pavilion was to commemorate the Apollo moon landings in 1969. It is an example of Brutalist architecture and design.
Cheers mate it looks crazy
Moon landings 😂😂😂😂👍
I've no idea why your channel came up as I haven't lived in the north east for more than 30 years but I couldn't believe it when you started talking about your computer course in Ridgemount House. I did a computer course there in 1984 - forty years ago, I can hardly believe it!
😂😂😂 small world mate hope your well ✅👍
From Hartlepool myself.
Whilst living in lovely Norton Village my Employer asked me if I would travel to Peterlee everyday as they needed a new Manager due to staff problems.
I obliged but my word the traffic jams every morning getting there.
Nightmare!
Nightmare 😂😂😂
Remember the Norseman Silver Dollar Saloon disco. and the Senate night club? Packed out.
First one yes I think mate
Wait a miniutttt this is simmalerrr A LIVE HERE 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
A block in Shotton Hall burnt out in the 90s when I was there but it was rebuilt
Was it
Lived in Peterlee for the 1st 13 years of my life, Southway then Pentland Close, Shame it's falling to bits, Had a really happy childhood there.
Class vid as per Terry. 👍
Cheers mate yeah it’s a shame
Ahhh i used to go there to rehearse with my band back in 2006. It was Horden. We used to go to Peterlee for rehearsals and all
Nice one
never been to peterlee shopping centre since i left back in 2002..? used to go to asda for my shopping...
there was an catalogue returns shop (around 2:55) and i bought an iron etc there... and was a sports shop there too - and i bought some mcgurk punchbags etc...used to carry them on the bus going back to murton haha
12:26 - I'm sure there was a furniture shop there as i bought a bed from there (299 quid!) around 2000... :)
used to buy cheap cds from woolies too..
i used to play snooker in a pub closeby too (but not in the town centre)...forget what it was called tho...it had about 3-4 snooker tables?
shame how it all is now, seems most towns around the uk are the same to an extent :(
Good old days mate some good shops in them days ruined by on line shopping
Some good bands played at the Argos Butterfly.
Really was there cheers
Spent my formative years in Peterlee from 2 to 15, Thames Rd, Kentmere Place and Oakerside Drive Peterlee was a great place to grow up in the 70,s Skate boarding in the town centre, Movie, s on a Sunday at the Big Club and spending all day down Castle Eden Dene. And fighting the Hordeners on the Big Field near the White house. Shame to see it in the sad state it's in. 😢
Cheers mate for the memories thanks 👍
Peterlee the Place to be
Peterlee for Industry
That was the sign on A19.Going to wreck and ruin mate.Such a shame.Lack of investment, cuts,no jobs ,drugs etc etc.😢
Good little video ,need to do more with Keano the postie !
Yeah mate he’s coming in a few
Actually, first houses built in Peterlee were Thorntree Gill opposite the flats
Cheers mate
First houses were built on Edenhill.
@@MadHatterDJ- no, they weren't
@stevecampbell7589 You are correct. Just checked my old building of peterlee book. Don't know why I had it in my head it was Yoden Rd.
The job centre is what was the peacocks clothes shop. Home Bargains was where the pub is now, the night club is now the probation office
Cheers mate I remember peacocks
The probation office is probably busier than the old night club.
What is the name of the gentleman who was a Councilor please? I lived in Peterlee in the 1960’s and was County and Town Councilor. Lived at Thames Rd and Church Close
We say his name in video at some point I forgot name mate sorry
Shocking how bad some places are in county Durham. Shocking!!! So much neglect and decline. Very depressing.
Very true mate shocking
me dad built his garage from little thorpe's hospital bricks
Really that’s cool mate
Slowly decaying and disused. Vandalism is a big problem around the town but I think the town centre and the council are as much to blame as the vandals, sheer neglect. I’m proud to be from Peterlee, just wish people would treat it with some respect. This year we’re celebrating 75 years, what exactly is there to celebrate? A new state of dilapidation?
“Peterlee the place to be”
Cheers mate it’s a real shame as there’s a lot of nice people living there
I am thinking of moving up to somewhere like Borden, do up have any advice on areas to try and areas to avoid?
Avoid all have good and bad some good places in Horden mate
@@Madsoutandabout if you advise to avoid, where up in that part of the woodswould you recommend that isnt over priced? as I am looking to get out of London as its over priced and loads of violent crime.
@@TinWhistleTV Oakerside is a desirable part of Peterlee, there are some nice new build houses too.
You have a good channel 👍🏻 there is no jobs round here aswell. No wonder people including lads are resorting to crime
Cheers mate thanks for watching and the comment
I was born in that hospital and lived on (long gone) Smith Crescent
Happy days mate
Bring back Job Lot to the town centre.
Did I just see a hair and beauty shop called 'Gawjus' spelt wrong?
I hope that was deliberate and not a shopkeeper that cannot spell,
That is going to keep me awake tonight
😂😂😂
Ain't got a idea when it was good closed in,
Where you filmed, I was banned because it has been private property and I did not have permission. Security came and forced me to delete the file. first time I've heard of downtown streets being owned by businesses!😮 Good job mate.
Cheers mate thanks and that’s a shame
I remember when wilkos was Fine Fare
Yes mate years ago all closed down now
That flat hadnt been purchased to be rented out. its a council sign
Ok cheers maté didn’t know
