Born in Horden in 1953 and lived in Second Street…I came back in 1975 as a teacher at Blackhills Road Primary School.
It was still the great community then as it had always been.
Decent, hard working people and their children were a joy to teach.
My parents lived in Sunderland Avenue and I used to come back with my children and visit…we were with the Armed Forces and they thought of my parents as their home base….they still do.
The heart ❤ left Horden when the colliery closed and it’s so sad to see how it is now.
My brothers and I were lucky to have great parents…a happy and fun childhood …there were lots of clubs and activities…parks, playgrounds and sports.
I roamed the streets you’ve shown carefree and safe.
Thanks for this….so many happy memories and now so much of it is like a wasteland

Born and bred in Horden.left in 1986.used to stop at parents house when I came up for the football.Absolutley shocked at the decline of the place and surrounding pit villages .Its such a shame as they were all good honest people who looked after each other and you could leave your door unlocked without the fear of been robbed.Great video though. My school mate used to live on 7th street back in the 70s

You definitely can't leave your door unlocked around there now lol, especially on the numbered streets. They're a smack head's paradise.

So depressing those houses. I wish they didn't have the need to demolish them.
I use to walk around those streets when i was a bairn, now they are a former shadow of themselves 😢 thank you for taken us along 😊

I was in Horden a couple of weeks ago looking at those houses in the numbered streets. A lot of those houses were boarded up. I did actually view a house on one of those streets. The house was on sale for £40,000 and it was in excellent condition. But in the end, I couldn't make an offer because I got a really bad vibe from those numbered streets. I spoke to some people in Peterlee and Sunderland and they advised me to avoid Horden like the plague. I did some research into Horden and I found out that the numbered streets are eventually going to be demolished under the Compulsory Purchase Order Act. That means even £10,000 is too much to pay for these properties. I spoke to one lady who moved to Eleventh Street from the South of England and she paid £30,000 for her house because she couldn't afford to live anywhere else. Now she's shitting herself the council will evict her from her own house. Even if the council pays her the going rate for her house, there's no way she'll be able to afford to buy another house. I think it's scandalous and disgusting. On a more optimistic note, I did view a property on Park Terrace, which I really liked but they wanted too much money for it. Thanks for uploading this video. The search continues! PS- I wonder if the person who paid £29,000 knew that the house was in danger of being demolished?

Thanks mate! I've been searching for somewhere to live for the past two months and there's no doubt that Horden and Hartlepool are the cheapest places in the whole of the UK. You highlighted the reasons in the video why Horden is the cheapest, but I'm not sure why Hartlepool is also the cheapest. Hartlepool has a large area near the town-centre where most of the streets have a number of boarded-up properties. There seems to be a theme here and these situations are avoidable. As soon as a few properties get boarded up, it has a domino effect and then loads of houses get boarded-up in the same area and then the whole area becomes devalued. Surely the way to avoid this would be to give the owners notice that if they don't fix their properties within a certain time, then the council will seize their property, refurbish it, then turn it into social housing or sell it cheaply to first-time buyers. In this way, they can avoid whole areas becoming ghost towns. @@Madsoutandabout

Mate, you've proper stirred some memories here,as a young lad I walked these streets for my work, there was full employment, the collieries were booming and the people were fantastic. The state of the place now dismays me this is the legacy that Maggie Thatcher left.I remember the occupants of that home on 6th St very well for a particular reason...I'll have some crack with you next time I see you about this....Great Video, keep them coming and never forget yer roots.

Lovin' these local North East videos, especially around Easington and the surrounding areas. Breaks my heart what the country, and especially our local areas have become thanks to successive Governments. I have lived and worked all over the world, and sometimes our area reminds me of a developing country 😪 but it will always be home. I went to see Hot Shots! Part Deux (Charlie Sheen) and that was the last or one of the last films to be shown at Horden Fairworld cinema in 1993.

they want these rundown areas so the 'investment' groups can buy them up for next to nothing, then few tins of paint and you have government subsidised migrant housing.

They would be better off keeping those few streets and refurbishing where necessary since they are decent solid houses and any replacements will be poorer construction and everything. In addition to that people round Durham and everywhere in fact are in desperate need of social housing, if they flatten those streets they probably won’t replace them with the same degree of social housing which helps nobody apart from the cash hungry developers are profit from it.
You right though that guy did pay way too much for that house, but this happens in auctions because it acts as a catalyst for peoples competitive nature and they end up bidding more than something’s worth.
Also they often haven’t looked inside the properties.
If you check out a channel called wandering turnip he recently did a video viewing an awful property in Middlesbrough for auction. He went in and you could see it was worth about 20p. It was unsalvageable. But some (most likely cockney mug) went and paid 36k at auction. And there is not a chance he could have viewed the house first since no sane person would have offered anything for it.
Great videos Mads keep em coming son! 👍

I was born in 1949 and lived in Alder Road with my parents and sister.. We moved to First street when my father got a pit job.. Then onto Second Street...I was at Horden Boys school till 1965 .. then rather than going down the pit ,,,,I joined the Royal Navy.....I visited my parents thro the years ... then left the Navy and moved to Australia... I have been back to Horden on holls a few times ,and it is so not the same village.. I am returning in may 2025 to visit my sister and her husband who live in South Terrace......And also see how many houses are left standing !!!???

I remember queueing 2 days in a row with my Aunty and my cousin to see Grease lol. Think the last time I went there was 1986 to watch the colour of money with my mate Afghan.

The council's solution is always demolition as so much money to be made from dodgy contracts from the demolition rebuild process. Far better to sell off to local people in need for say £1 and offer a refurb grant on proviso that they must be used as a family home for a certain period before being sold.
