Troy Aikman would say "I had the best seat in the house watching Emmitt". Of course many detractors might point to Emmitt running behind the greatest OL to ever play this game. And adding to the Great Wall of Dallas one Moose Johnston. The question is asked, Was Emmitt the best because of the line or vice versa? The answer is simple: They made each other the best. It's the same when talking Montana and Rice, they made each other the best ever. Emmitt was the most complete RB to play. Running, Receiving, and Blocking. he did it all. And while many RB's try to juke a defender. Emmitt simply went right thru them. And as was pointed out here. Emmitt was also a truly big-game RB. When it mattered the most #22 delivered. Plenty RB's were faster and stronger. But Emmitt was the whole package. And the Greatest EVER.

I see people saying, "Oh if Barry or Gale or blah blah blah had the Cowboys line then they would put up the same stats or better." But would they? Emmitt Smith played longer than 99% of all running backs. Could Barry have done that and been as consistent as Smith? Who knows. All I know is that Emmitt Smith has the records, he has the Super Bowls, he has it all, therefore he is the GOAT. Stop living in a fairytale land and accept the truth of the matter.

Emmitt was a great back and I complement him for his longevity, which is an enormous determinant. BUT...
He's NOT Jim Brown, nor Walter Payton, the latter of which Emmitt agreed was not only better than he was, but also the GOAT.
I'm a HUGE Barry Sanders fan, but I really struggle to put him above (1) Jim Brown and (2) Walter Payton.
Once past those 3, then you have RBs like (a) OJ Simpson, (b) Eric Dickerson, (c) LT, (d) Adrian Peterson to compete with Emmitt for the #4 slot.
And if you consider shorter careers, one has to lump in Earl Campbell. If he was able to extend his career another, say, 4 years, HE'D be right there with Jim Brown. For a 3 season stretch, he could be the GOAT, he just didn't have the longevity to qualify. And yes, I did consider the studly Gale Sayers but not even he can compete with what Earl did, especially '78-'80. As soon as he hit the field his rookie year, he was the best RB in the league.
Want to know something interesting? Jim Brown put Earl Campbell as #2 ALL TIME....

    On my Mount Rushmore backs.
And it is very hard. Because everyone's going to have their favorites. And I respect everybody's choice.
    So here's mine.
Jim Brown/Walter Payton/Barry Sanders/and Earl Campbell. Sometimes I wish there was a great wall, instead of the Mount. But those are my four.
And let's be let me be real clear about why Barry Sanders is on that list. Because he was getting close and he retired.
(the Lions didn't really want a championship in Detroit. They should oh got Barry a whole lot of help.
I believe that Barry would have stuck around. He would have broke Walter Payton's record. Jim Brown retired early. I believe he had minimum of 3 years left in him
Poor Earl Campbell, play down some really really bad Houston teams where he was the only offense.
And it took a toll on him. Walter PAYTON HAD A COUPLE MORE YEARS LEFT IN HIM. BUT WE HAD NEIL ANDERSON IN CHICAGO. AND WALTER WANTED TOO SEE THIS KID PLAY.
Emmett got real lucky,& had a great offensive line his entire career. He didn't really get hurt too much. I'm not knocking him he was a great player.
He had the longevity in the drive to keep going.
Like I said I just want to have their favorites in their own pics for their Mount Rushmore of BACKS.
    I RESPECT EVERYONE'S CHOICE.

Emmitt Smith is probably the best example of why stats are overrated. Thanksgiving Day was always priceless, Cowboys and Lions games back to back…watching how both of their offensive lines performed for them (AND Moose Johnston, arguably the best blocking fullback ever).

Meh. I've also seen Emmitt just leave it alone.
The only time I've ever seen Emmitt comment that Barry was better was when Barry, being the humble guy he is, said he thinks that Emmitt could be based on his resume. Emmitt returned the kindness, which was a cool moment to read about.
I'm not sure, however, that Emmitt really believes that Barry is the GOAT and/or better than he was.
Hell, Emmitt was once asked about Walter and he referred to Walter as the GOAT, which he is, or 2nd only to Jim Brown...

You left off all the hall of fame lineman on Detroit, and the fact that more often than not (forgot the actual numbers) when Barry was out of the game the lions still won, the reverse with Smith being out of the line up. And just to say it again, longevity isn't a fault it's a positive when looking at someone's carrier... Emmitt will never get the GOAT title cause he was an all pro team. So everyone was getting looked at. With Barry in Detroit, it was just him.

    Sanders, Brown, Payton, Smith.
    In that order.
    Honorable mention: Gale Sayers.
Just imagine what all of those guys not named Smith could have done running behind the Dallas O-line w Aikman and Irvin as other weapons?
Especially Payton, who could block, tackle, pass, catch, and kick ten times better than the others?
He also ran twice as hard as Smith. So did Brown.
Sanders and Sayers has better moves and better speed than Smith.
Smith was good, and he has the record. Cannot take that away.
But no way was he the GOAT.

First RB to lead league in rush yards as well as win Superbowl same season (1992) Botox&whiskey Jones (didnt want to pay ES22, team went 0-2, couldnt run the ball) for all those ANY RB can tun behind The Great Wall of Dallas (if they were the best why arent they in HOF?!?) Mark Tuninei Nate Newton Mark Stepnoski Kevin Gogan Erik Williams (all should have been at least decade plus) also Dallas lost 1game with ES22 (Leon Lett botch vs Dolphins)
Led league in rushing again as well as MVP&SB MVP
    He set the record 10/27/02
    Not even 12seasons in
For all the Barry Sanders fans
Guess which team was 6-1&1-6 without them?!

No, he is not, i have been saying for years, like a lot of others. That if Barry Sanders had that Dallas Cowboys offensive line that Emmit Smith had. They'd be talking about Sanders as the goat of halve backs. Emmit Smith was on a juggernaut of a team on both offense and defense. The Cowboys haven't been able to replicate that team in almost 3 decades. Just like the 86 Bears, and many other juggernaut teams. The hogs in the offensive line need to be able to pass protect and run block. Guess what those 90s Cowboys offensive lines were?. That offensive SQUAD is in another stratosphere. That team on defense was one of the best, so you add ground and pound plus a defensive monster and you have the recipe for GREATNESS! Give that team to Barry Sanders and he would have stacked numbers greater than Emmit. Hell, put most running backs on that kind of team, they all would have had similar careers. Same thing with the quarterback, put Young or an Elway on that team and it's GAME OVER FOR EVERYBODY!
