Why does everyone massively increase their prices? I don't get why they think the average consumer would go out and buy a board that costs 30% more for the same feature set.

@@katzicael Yeah it's nice, I also believe the Nova is the cheapest Z790 board that has a Q-LED post error reporter and a power and reset button on its board.
Thanks for doing roundups it seems like nobody else does these anymore and they're super helpful. edit: I'm not sure if it's accurate across the board for Gigabyte, but Buildzoid mentioned the cheaper Z790 refresh used an updated memory topology which was from a more expensive model original release.
Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite X is NOT just a "previous elite + wi-fi 7". It has ram overclocking SIGNIFICANTLY improved and some other quality of life improvements. It is in many ways a better product and is worth the extra 40$. These kind of videos make me question the expertise of this channel.
Also the new Elite X is 8 layer vs the old Elite AX being 6, and along with the other changes others have mentioned probably all adds to how it's supposedly better with memory OC. Backdrilling was another thing Buildzoid mentioned but I'm not familiar myself with what that is aside from supposedly being better for memory OC. Also the vrm is different, 16 90a phases vs 16 70a phases. The audio was also updated to the 1220, instead of the 897 on the old board. So yeah, actually pretty significantly a different board, more changes than what some others did for their refresh boards.
People were EXTREMELY disappointed with not having 10GB network on the original hero. Even after cancelling the Extreme and introducing the Dark Hero, they couldn't AT LEAST add the 10GB network... Very disappointing
I've been surprised to see the Gigabyte board at such low price and with a 10G port. Usually, these ports are only available on 1000$+ boards but this one was only 530$USD. Again, imo, that's still super expensive. If you need 10G, I'd say pick a 200$-ish board and buy a separate 10G network card that'll run you an extra 100$USD. You'll save 200$ over a stupid network port where anybody wants your wallet _and_ a kidney to get this single 10G port.
Could you please make a comparison video with more budget-friendly MBs? Gigabyte Z790 GAMING X AX, Gigabyte Z790 UD AX, Msi Z790 GAMING PLUS WIFI, ASRock Z790 Steel Legend WiFi, and so on? Temps, power consumption, RAM support, stability, some productivity/gaming test, etc
A budget Mobo for what cpu? A 14900k? If you buy a 14900k, don't skimp. I do agree that a mid range board for a 14600k or 14700k would be a nice video as well even this many months later. Cheers!
Why does the 14900K loose so much frequency when run at 250W? It seems like there is an issue with the voltage curve of the 14900K and it always runs at the same VCore regardless of PL2. Expected behaviour would be that VCore is reduced and at 254W you should get something around 5.2GHz. At 3.75GHz you usually have around 100W power consumption, not 250W.
No, its because those board are running on Intel`s base power after the boost at a mere 125w. As Steve says, the messy part abt the Intel boards are there maybe 3 cofigurations out of the box, No Power Limit, 253w for both PL1 and PL2, and Intel Specs 125w and 253w.
@@相馬光好 16:00 The chart shows 3750MHz and around 250W package power. I think Steve is experienced enough to know how to correctly record HWInfo data and it is the same for several boards, so obviously not a typo. Gigabyte wifi 7 is an 8 layer pcb vs 6 for the Elite AX as well as a better layout in bios. So not the same just with wifi 7 and 14th gen compatibility.
I picked up the z790 Nova at Microcenter because IMO it has flagship features for less than $300. Post code , power reset buttons , strong VRM, Memory OC reports are excellent if you look at some OC forums, 6 M.2 slots! And so on.. z690 Aorus Master ($590-ish AUD) cuz MSI decided to bump their z690 Carbon to $700+. (I actually wanted MSI mobo to play with their bios as I have already have ASRock and Gigabyte Mobo.) - Can't convince myself to buy MSI after sudden price hike and Asus always $200+ more expensive. - Post code, USB real estate, physical buttons, fan hub, full audio, beefy heat sinks. (Quality of Life) - Similar/better feature set as MSI. (Except missing HDMI port on Master) - Bios easy to update with USB to 13th Gen. Why not z790 Aorus Master? - Absurd price premium for unreasonable upgrades/changes. - Quick release button is nice, not $300 nice. - Why pay for Gen 5 if Gen 4/3 is all you reasonably need? - Downgraded audio hub. - Looks almost the same mobo if you don't go into detail.
I would be interested in seeing if the comparable Z690 boards work just as well on these 14th processors considering you can find some at much lower prices.
They do kind of. There are 2 issues you may encounter. Same of the cheaper ones may be lacking in terms of power delivery albeit that only affects the i7 and i9 and second, many z690 cannot handle ddr5 above 6200 or so
Something's up here. It doesn't seem right that running with 250-280W power limits vs letting it run unlimited/thermally limited at 308-330W would result in a 1.5-1.8GHz difference in clock speed. I'd expect a few hundred points difference in the score and around 100MHz lower clocks.
The VRM of the Aorus Z790 Elite reaches 59 °C with an i9 14900K at 334 Watts. That's impressive when considering the price, which is €205 (inc. VAT) here in Europe.
10 years ago if you had told me people would be buying $600-700 and even $800+ motherboards for a gaming pc I wouldn’t have believed it. Those used to be high end WS board prices. The mobo can be the most expensive part of your build now unless you have a 4090.
sorry, but boards costing that much and selling enough to warrant making them is more than $10 years old - if anything, the board I am about to pay $280-new for right now is better today than the board I paid $350 for ten years ago. anyway, of course influcencer focus on the pricy/overpriced crap and then try and tell you that $300-$500 cpus "need" them (they don't - and never will).
I'm planning to pair Gigabyte Z790M Aorus Elite with 14600k...will that be a good move??? Will the M-atx version perform as good as ATX version incase of overclocking & Vrm thermals
Personal recommendation: I have used manual OC with static voltage and clocks for over a decade now. While boosting is nice, I prefer to instead limit the maximum speed to avoid hitting thermal throttling. This ensures consistent performance. Also, while the system may not be as fast as possible, the room doesn’t get as hot. Intel’s boosting behavior will consume every last watt for greatly diminishing returns in power, performance, and heat generation. The final benefit is also noise, because the fans don’t need to spin up to keep the system cool.
I thought you misspoke when you said the price of the AsRock nova board considering the features it has on it are comparable to the other boards which now cost $500. Nope, It's just that much cheaper. Unfortunately right now, the going price is around $330 being what I would consider a good deal as opposed to a true bargain at $270.

@@Hardwareunboxed Hey, while I'm here I got a question. Do you think you guys could do CPU+GPU bottleneck testing comparisons for a set budget? Let's say you're building a PC $1500 USD if I get a i3 13400, and a 4070Ti would I be better off than if I got a 14600k and I 4060 for example. Or, if I had an older PC how far could I spend on a GPU before I upgrade my CPU? All normal benchmarks separate this aspect for proper testing. But in the real world the limit is usually the budget. So seeing how low you can go on the CPU before you run into issues would be interesting. I'd guess the main issues would show up at 1080p. I think you technically did a video like this before (3600 + 3080), but an update would be nice. Hardware Canucks also did a video like this. If I explained what I meant horribly it was called "4090 trashes older ryzen cpus" I guess the easiest way to test would be to just run the all CPUs with different priced GPUs that way the data can be universal for anyone's budget. Would certainly be an insane amount of work though.
I don't understand why you would do extensive testing but not provide clock speeds and cinebench scores. It's one thing to criticize certain boards due to shipping with intel power limits by default, it's another to not show how that's relevant.

I'm really interestedin the 7800X3D but the idle draws i see compared to intel keep me from buying it. Im curious how much of a gain there is to be had when tuning and the same goes for intel rigs. my system is on 10 to 14 hours a day but i only game a few hours the rest is light loads and if i compare some random data from amd vs my 9900k my 9900k is absurdly efficient compared to amd options this gen. (full system (case only) idle of 32 watts with extra fans and lights).
Im assuming you dont pay power bills if you think the idle power draw of a modern pc is costing you 100s of dollars. I can guarantee you the actual load power draw isnt costing you anywhere close to that much even.

You really shouldnt review vrms on temperature. Better voltage regulation comes with inherent efficiency loss so youre encouraging performance regression in the actual job of the vrm. You also dont seem to lock vrm switching or active phases do the more a vrm gimps those the better theyll look in reviews. There is also the fact that vrm temperature doesnt play any role besides vrm lifespan (of which theyll generally last over a decade at well over 100c at the mosfets where the temps are monitored snd derived from). Unlike a cpu or gpu which is using a pretty on edge voltage for a node where it'll degrade rapidly at a given temp and needs to throttle and that throttling means less data calculated, a vrm doesnt pass data or meet any of those reasons why throttling exists on the cpu or gpu.

Some more ideas for testing: 1) DDR speeds possible 2) Boot speed with different options: Fast Boot & Windows Fast Boot + unchecking unnecessary boot devices (USB stick, SATA etc.) 3) M.2 speeds 4) USB speeds. Maybe also with multiple at once 5) WiFi/LAN speeds. I guess not all use Intel (?) First i used the 14900k on a Tomahawk DDR4 and the XTU stress tests were failing, now with Z790 Dark Hero no problems. Having PL1=PL2=253W lets run the CPU max at 210-220W with lower clock speeds, while having 288W limit (Tomahawk) it pulled up to 288W with higher clockspeeds. It is trange that it doesn’t hits at standard Intel limits the PL. I have a game that can push the CPU to over 200W. If the game performs better if i maybe set 300W PL1 & PL2 or unlimited? Because there is the invisible wall of 210-220W at Intel PL. Dark Hero has PL1 253W and PL2 unlimited.

Why haven't you mentioned the ram and their speeds? There should be a part 2 of this which shows us what the max ram speed of each board is and up to how many sticks of ram as there is a lot of false claims in the industry right now that we need to set clear. You showed that there are 4 sticks of ram on the test bench but didn't mention what the speed of the ram was.
It is amazing to see such a big, 30C, difference in temperatures. I think if Cinebench scores were reported, the boards with the highest temperatures would have slightly higher performance. Also had you the ability to measure noise, the fan noise and temperature would correlate quite nicely. To really see the difference in quality of the boards, each of the boards would have to be set up exactly the same using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Using core frequency can be misleading because a thread on a high frequency core will cause that core to overheat and the thread will be moved to a cooler core. This movement of the thread takes time but does no useful work. Using the older version of the Aorus Master, I did an under frequency, under voltage, set the turbo boost time to 1 second, and set a power limit of 260 watts on a 13900K, and still got a 30 minute Cinebench 23 score of over 40000 while Furmark was running on a 4090 GPU.

this, while I wont comment on 12+1+1 upgrades - many of the mid-range fresh boards got features that were previously only for high end like layers to 8 and top ram speeds, and as you said, better power delivery. or rather, many mid-range board that cost a good price are giving you the features they should, which 590 and 690 most certainly did not.
any 4 memory slot motherboard should just be skipped for 14th gen, you can run 8000xmp with a asus apex encore and it pumps performance by alot, the 4 slots boards you are lucky if you hit 7600..
Quad slot DDR5 boards are a waste for most people regardless. It's possible to get 96GB total capacity with just two sticks. 2x16GB is the most common DDR5 capacity. Quad slot boards should be reserved for workstation users who need more than 96GB of RAM. Currently quad slot just harms max speeds that can be achieved.

@@TechTusiast this channel is about as useful as Linus is - being big in numbers means nothing. It never does, for almost anything.
Yep Steve was seriously misinformed on this one. Pretty bad error imo
The reason why I went with the z690 master. 10Gb.

Either there is something wrong with the CPU (bad voltage curve of some microcode mess) or he did the 1.3V VCore test before the regular one on ALL boards and forgot to set it back to default.
Would be nice to see more memory scaling benchmarks with these boards, a lot of them advertise 7600 mt/s out of the box.

I picked up the z790 Nova at Microcenter because IMO it has flagship features for less than $300. Post code , power reset buttons , strong VRM, Memory OC reports are excellent if you look at some OC forums, 6 M.2 slots! And so on.. I also picked up a $65 MSI z690 A Pro D4 on that trip open box for "reasons." 😆
z690 Aorus Master ($590-ish AUD) cuz MSI decided to bump their z690 Carbon to $700+.
(I actually wanted MSI mobo to play with their bios as I have already have ASRock and Gigabyte Mobo.)
- Can't convince myself to buy MSI after sudden price hike and Asus always $200+ more expensive.
- Post code, USB real estate, physical buttons, fan hub, full audio, beefy heat sinks. (Quality of Life)
- Similar/better feature set as MSI. (Except missing HDMI port on Master)
- Bios easy to update with USB to 13th Gen.
Where is the z790 all white mb from ASUS like with the Z690 Supreme?
It's a shame MSI ruined the MAG tomahawk board with Yellow text.

I'm planning to pair Gigabyte Z790M Aorus Elite with 14600k...will that be a good move??? Will the M-atx version perform as good as ATX version incase of overclocking & Vrm thermals
Yes it does
Even in case of 14600k you can go with gigabyte b760m aourus pro ax
Very good motherboard
Runs the processor at its full potential

I'd much rather have a 10 GbE port than Wi-Fi 7. Wi-Fi to me on these expensive boards is totally absurd, especially if you FPS game.
Assuming you have an internet connection higher than 1Gb, you think a game is going to generate for than 1Gb of traffic? Unless you’re moving around big files, 10GbE is a waste too. Then look at the cost of a 10GbE switch, router/firewall.
@@luketurner9211 .. WiFi adds way, way too much latency and jitter from an irregular connection for competitive level FPS gaming. In other words teleporting and packet loss "marshmallow" bullets.
@@DJaquithFL , yes I know, I've been a network engineer for 20 years. My comment was around the wired connection. 10GbE is a nice touch, but its overkill and not required for gaming. @@Hardwareunboxed Yeah, no worries. Better late than never, considering you're the only ones who do this.
Im assuming you dont pay power bills if you think the idle power draw of a modern pc is costing you 100s of dollars. I can guarantee you the actual load power draw isnt costing you anywhere close to that much even.

All the WiFi at so called Pro-Boards is total BS!
If you are a Pro, you have a professional network in your work-/living-place and you don't need/want WiFi at your desktop-pc-mainboard.
The same for audio at pro-mainboards; what you just need is a digital audio-output like HDMI. Everything else is BS, because if you are a Pro, you have a real professional or even high-end sound processor like an av-receiver for your audio.
All these shenanigans you don't really need as a pro-user, are totally waste!

1) DDR speeds possible
2) Boot speed with different options: Fast Boot & Windows Fast Boot + unchecking unnecessary boot devices (USB stick, SATA etc.)
3) M.2 speeds
4) USB speeds. Maybe also with multiple at once
5) WiFi/LAN speeds. I guess not all use Intel (?)
First i used the 14900k on a Tomahawk DDR4 and the XTU stress tests were failing, now with Z790 Dark Hero no problems.

I grabbed my Asus ROG Strix-F Z390 board when it was new for $249. This board was the second highest in the Strix lineup back then, only surpassed by the Strix-E.
My 9700k was also only $330. Brand new.
The (artificial) inflation on PC hardware is a god damn insult.
pandemic ruined everything and everyone
B760 motherboard compression 😊
Godlike should be 2 dimm only
Ever since i saw your series some years ago about motherboards, I always wait for reviews about boards before making a choice. So important getting the right board from the get go
this is not ecen close to a review, its basically just reading spec sheet and talking about it - service to be sure (having to do it yourself as I do can be a pain, or it can be ADD heaven), but this is not a review, not even close.
Where'd Unify-X go? Sad
They are testing VRM....
On thinking about this further, "false claims in the industry". Look at the QVL and see what it supports. Lol.
No MSI Z790 CARBON MAX?
I think ill go with the asrock nova it looks cool :)
Did Steve time travel for the voice recording? Cinebench R32? Dang dude
Great video I congrats you for it, there is really not much information out there for new Z790. But I am gonna correct you because you not check previous boards actually they not same VRM many of previous versions is 12+1+1 those from midrange z790, now new boards are 16+1+1 they got better VRM
this, while I wont comment on 12+1+1 upgrades - many of the mid-range fresh boards got features that were previously only for high end like layers to 8 and top ram speeds, and as you said, better power delivery.
or rather, many mid-range board that cost a good price are giving you the features they should, which 590 and 690 most certainly did not.
gigabyte seems to be best choice for intel 12gen and up
15:05 It's incredible how Steve has access to such unavailable benchmarks such as Cinebench R32 :P reviewer life
any 4 memory slot motherboard should just be skipped for 14th gen, you can run 8000xmp with a asus apex encore and it pumps performance by alot, the 4 slots boards you are lucky if you hit 7600..
Most people should not go for 8000 memory, which is likely to cause instability and is expensive. The actual performance improvement is also limited.
@@Raivo_K I agree
Why gigabyte can't put 2.1 hdmi port ? that's why I don't buy it
What about a B760 round up? :D
When it comes to NVIDIA and Intel you always have this snarky vibe and can't help but throw in jabs every chance you get. This is very obvious and it's a poor show of character for a reviewer to carry such bias in every review/video. Just my observation.
Well, somehow it's fitting, isn't it? Refreshed boards that barely offer anything new but are more expensive? That fits the overall theme of Intel's 14th "gen" perfectly!
They probably had an executive meeting along the lines of "hey, Intel's getting away with screwing everyone over - let's get going and do the same!"
"Truth or dare"
"Okay uhmmm... Intel! I dare you to release the same exact cpu buuut.. with a 100mhz bump as 14th gen."
"Okay uhmmm... Mobo manufacturer! I dare you to release the same exact motherboards buuut... with wifi 7."
*Nvidia has joined the chat
I propose drinking game, every time Steve says "same" you drink... and hopefully don't need to get alcohol pumped out by the end of the video... :-D
27 times, cya in hell :D
Hats off to the engineers though, all these mobos look incredible aesthetically.
That's the work of the designers I think but yeah all boards look good
