This is a wild song, my brain can't even get a hold of the full first minute.. never know what's coming next. And then it breaks down into this spacey wonderland... pretty sick all around. Really starting to love the Genesis soundchip the more I dive into it
Pure epicness. This game has it all. Spectacular gameplay, awesome weapons to chose from or use them all, amazing graphics and of course the beautiful original soundtrack. Makes me feel like popping it in my Sega Genesis right now and enjoy it even more. Perfect game: 10/10 : )
When the composers give such importance to PSG while showing such mastery on the FM side, you know they were at it with those japanese computers and the YM2203.
You hear that sound? That, dear friends, is the sound of the 90's. The most COOLEST time to be growing up in. You will NEVER see the 90's again. Ever. Just ear-orgasmic pieces like this uploaded on here...
Limitation breeds creativity. Throw modern hardware at game music composers now and 99.9% of the time you are going to get is technically complex but completely forgettable and uninspired orchestral pieces, because it's the safe and unoffensive solution.
While I am perhaps too non-committal and fickle to absolutely stand behind this statement, I do believe this is my favorite track in the whole game! It's so nuanced, and has just the right amount of energy, just the right amount of dissonance, just the right amount of soaring, sing-songy melodiousness, just the right amounts of ambience, just the right number of twists and turns and layers, makes great use of the FM and PSG chips in wonderful partnership, and of course, is a great example of jazz fusiony goodness in a video game! I'm telling you, there's something extra magical with Japanese composers! :-) Cheers!

As i listen to this soundtrack, I just realized: this was 1992! Genny (sorry, MD) games didn't usually sound this good at this point; not bad, but as an audiophile, I compare this to later games and their sound engines on the system's lifespan.
SoR, Devil Crash MD, Verytex (act 3), Midnight Resistance, Decapattack, Rolling thunder 2, thunder Force 3, Elemental Master, Sol Deace, Devilish, Crue Ball, Herzog Zwei, El Viento, Gaiares, Arcus Odyssey, El Viento, Master of Monsters....All of them came back on 1989-1992. In fact, the really good OST came from Japan, with a few exceptions.
I'm hearing three measures of 13/8 and a measure of 12/8 for the main riff. Or 13+13+13+12. Lemme know if anyone hears it differently. I'm counting that 13/8 as 4+4+3+2. Oh and the sixteenth measure is a full 32 beats instead of just 12/8. Crazy piece.
The difference between sound quality and music quality Sure it can handle higher frequencies but SNES has no synth and all the Genesis OSTs are way better than the SNES OSTs at least in my opinion
Yeah, all the genesis had was a revolutionary array of patches and sounds. Who wants pushed envelops anyways. Just give me more basic ass early 80s bleep bloops.
+Marisa Roo The Genesis can handle high frequencies just fine, if you know how to make good sounds with FM. The right modulation will produce higher pitched sounds that aren't shrill, but instead sparkly. The difference between the two is more about the approach. The SNES' S-SMP is entirely sample based, which makes for better orchestral music, but lacks a certain crispness you get from the Genesis' YM2612 and PSG. It also tends to do grungy and gritty sounds worse. This is in part due to the SNES sound chip producing somewhat muffled sound in and of itself, but also has much to do with the limited space that composers were allowed for their music samples, an issue a synth doesn't have. The end result is, in the right hands, electronic and hard rock/metal styles tend to sound better on the Genesis. Certain types of jazz or funk also can sound better, due to requiring lower polyphony than classical.
Truth. The Japanese (mostly) composers really knew their stuff. Suitably honoured by this brilliant band: th-cam.com/video/H0zhU-HdCCU/w-d-xo.html and also like this th-cam.com/video/yt6DDEj89Js/w-d-xo.html
@@avideogamemaster Bit-ness doesn't even make sense in this context. It's a synth, not a CPU. Bit-ness generally is used to refer to the width of a CPU's internal registers or the width of the data bus.
Griffgames I don't think M2 uses emulation. I think they actually port over the game code instead, which is probably also why you have all these amazing features like no slowdown, Styx Mode, etc. I'm glad M2 took this direction, as porting games is usually better than emulating them.
