It's crazy how he comes out with this track and almost feels ashamed he made it when he just needed an outlet for his problems in the only way he knew how. Now it's almost 30 years later and if you wanna rap about killing yourself, no one judges and it's probably a banger.

Loved the reaction Tom, you said it reminded you of old school music - you’re right. You may be familiar with Biggie but if not he was killed in 1997 only a year or two after making all this music about him dying. Biggie and Tupac were the rap legends of the 90’s. Biggie is like the OG emo rapper, he was one of the first to rap about the dark side of his mental health at his level / fame

@@zambonibob2026 What's even worse is that his and Pac's relationship fell apart over a misunderstanding. They used to be best friends, even collaborating on albums. They both grew up in New York; Biggie respected Pac for his family's history with the Black Panthers and Pac respected Biggie for making music about the harsh realities of growing up on the street.
Pac was robbed and shot at Quad Studios in 1994 while Biggie and Diddy were upstairs and just about a week later he was out of the hospital facing charges for sexual assault. Just a few months later Biggie dropped "Who Shot Ya?", which Tupac believed was aimed at him (which it wasn't; it was recorded months before the Quad Studios shooting for a collab with another rapper), and the verses "So you know where to tell Jake, lame nigga / Brave nigga, turned front page nigga" (which Pac thought was referencing his sexual assault trial) and "Old school, new school, need to learn, though / I burn, baby, burn like 'Disco Inferno'" (which Pac thought was referencing his album Old School) convinced Pac that the song was about him and that Biggie was behind his shooting. Just a few months later Pac dropped "Hit 'Em Up," a diss track directly aimed at Biggie. Three months after that, he was shot dead (likely by the Southside Crips). Biggie was shot 5 months after that, most likely by a hitman hired by Suge Knight for "revenge" against Biggie.
What makes it even worse is that Biggie genuinely wanted the feud to end. He held an interview after Pac's death saying that he really wanted (and expected) him to pull through, and was genuinely saddened when he heard that Pac died. Pac also seemed to want to end the feud by the end of his life but given "Hit 'Em Up" released so close to his death it's hard to say.

From my understanding, the type of instrumental that they used back in the day was called “boom BAP”. It definitely is a East Coast type of thing, and they used to live in the earlier days, and it did necessitate a lot more storytelling and just going with the flow instead of having crazy sounds like a lot of the stuff that they have a trap music nowadays.

I genuinely dont think that its a dilusion that the people in my life can't understand. I know for a fact they can't. I don't want to associate with the people that can understand at this point, its too risky, ive removed several dozen people from my life to get better, but those are the only people that understand. Besides thst, a lot of the friends I've had are dead from suicide, overdose or murder. The only ones left are still in the mud, or so removed from it that they dont want to hear it or hear from me even though we're both clean, and its mutual. My parents can't possibly know what I've been through, they'd be terrified if I told them. Theres just some shit that builds up, theres very few people left that I can talk to about shit without putting myself at risk of destroying my life again. This is a song about drugs, relationships and hurt. Asking for forgiveness in a way you couldnt ask personally to the people you've harmed, the people that used to care for you and tried to or did understand you. Theres no way to experience it vicariously, you have to get it to get it. It almost seems like theres no other option to end shit and just hope for forgiveness, hope that the afterlife is what you hoped, and hope that the people youve affected make it out alright despite your actions. You have to hit rock bottom to truly understand what this song is talkin about.
Edit: finding the right professional is fucked, trying therapist after therapist that just feels bad for you but has no idea what youre talking about is AIDS, trying medication after medication that makes you fat, or stimulates another mental illness you have is complete bullshit. I'm just waiting to die, at this point after 2 attempts and several hospital stays to try to straighten shit out, im just tired of trying to explain. This song is as raw as it gets, and only those who are truly done living can understand beyond a surface level understanding. Yeah, "if i die, fuck it i wanna go to hell, if im a piece of shit it aint hard to fuckin tell" hits even if you aint there yourself, but has a completely different feel to those in that position.

Altho it’s fine as a stand alone track I really think the way it closes the “Ready to Die” album is more fitting. Throughout the album you hear him rap about being frustrated with life and going into a life a crime. Then he has songs about all the bad things that come with drug dealing, friends getting killed, friends going to jail, being paranoid of cops and rival crews etc…. By the end of it he is overwhelmed and closes the album with “suicidal thoughts”. It’s sad but it’s a great journey.
