  • For a Dancer- Jackson Browne
Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you'd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you're nowhere to be found
I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
    That I can't sing
    I can't help listening
And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round
Crying as they ease you down
'cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
    Dancing our sorrow away
    (right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(there's nothing you can do about it anyway)
Just do the steps that you've been shown
    By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
    Another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone
Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don't let the uncertainty turn you around
(the world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound
Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
    And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
    But you'll never know

I am deeply saddened by David Lindley's passing - his guitar, violin and other instruments helped to define much of Jackson Browne's early catalogue of great songs. He will be sorely missed - may he Rest In Peace

Many of us are fighting for those like you to get the benefits and care that you all have earned. I know this is the most difficult battle of your life. Find peace in knowing that you inspire others and inform the work we do for those like you who’ve served on the front lines.

16 years ago, my wife, Kate, had ovarian cancer, during the ordeal, she said to me , For a Dancer should be played at her funeral. five or six years later, we held hands at the Marquee in Cork, Ireland, as Jackson Browne and David Lindley played the song. Some years later, through a contact, Jackson signed a poster "With best wishes to Kate" Magic ! RIP David

RIP David. Play on. My favorite song of all time. It has always reminded me of my daughter. While it's obviously about death, I've always heard a father or parent talking to daughter in it. My daughter was gracious enough to allow it to be our daddy/daughter dance song (with some lyric adjustments here and there by the band's lead singer).

I was 17 (now 63). I was in high school and I was in full adolescence crisis. After dinner at 8 in the evening I went to my room, turned off the light, lit a cigarette and the radio and waited for 9: first there was SUPERSONIC that sent beautiful music but a little "commercial" if you can say so of pieces still incredible. Then Massarini arrived with POPOFF and the night began: with him I discovered Jackson Browne, DESPERADO's Eagles and countless others. It was a real journey into the night: I was out of my room traveling around the world. I still have the chills in the memory of those years. I try to relive them by learning to play and sing those pieces: it is a palliative but it is good for me even if I am late for the sky. Thanks Jackson

I saw Jackson Browne at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater Florida back in 2007 or 2008? I forgot. I went to the show by complete accident. I was maybe 15 and i sat transfixed. He played by himself with either a keyboard or guitar during a song. Just his voice and 1 instrument. For roughly 2 hours i sat there in a kinda dream state. Just a magical experience. I was sitting 4th row.

    • @ellariel7457

I saw him on that tour. Most of the songs - as he has done often - were by audience request. It was a magical, spontaneous way to see the true depth & extent of his talent. He joked on that tour about how many of his songs were sad vs. upbeat. And he does deliver - and lift us from - melancholy better than anyone, imho. But he also can carry us to places where where more than anything, we want to join in the dance.
I’ve been a fan since his early solo days, back when I was growing up in Central Florida, and about your age at that concert. Glad to see he’s still reaching new folks coming up! If you get the chance, I hope you can see him again, with a full band backing him as well. It’s magic of a different kind. En-joy!

I love this particular live version of this beautiful song, and find it interesting that you merged the old live footage with the new. Thanks for posting it. :-)

🎼~ I know you’d rather be dancing.. dancing our sorrows away.. nothing you can do about it anyway.. ..until a dance becomes you’re very own... .. perhaps a better world is drawing near.. just as easy it can all disappear.. along w whatever meaning you might have found.. somewhere around the time you arrive and the time you go...
