Best purchase: Hiking poles. Never thought it could make such a difference on long hikes. Saves my knees and back when carrying a heavy backpack especially up and down hills. Also helps the balance on those uneven terrains and water crossings.

Best thing I purchased was an old D300s for my 12 year old daughter. It's been amazing going out and spending time with her doing photography together. Second best thing was a Peakdesign capture clip so I can clip my camera to my shoulder strap when backpacking even with a big lens.

Ive only recently started seriously taking pictures and it sounds kinda simple but the best thing ive got lately is a tripod and a cleaning kit for the sensor. The tripod has made all the difference in helping to eliminate any camera shake plus the tripod has a level on it so I can check its angle. And the cleaning kit helped with little spots I was starting to see on my photos.
Thankyou for all of your videos you've really helped me out as I've begun this adventure.

Without a doubt my best a favourite purchase within the last 12 months was the Nikon Z6 with the kit lens 24-70mm and an added treat 50mm f1.8. The bokeh effect on the 1.8 is absolutely stunning and has helped me push myself as a photography! It's also a great lens for pet photography which I have been exploring to add as a service to my business.
Sadly haven't been out with the camera as much as I would have liked to during the lockdown but will definitely be making up for it.

Some very good purchases I have made in the last 12months 1. My Fuji X-T3 2. Fujinon 100-400mm Lens 3. Smallrig L bracket. 4. Jupio dual charger for Fuji batteries. The XT3 is a joy to use. It’s lightweight and the dials to set your ISO, SS are awesome. It feels as if you are really taking part in the process of making a photo. The 100-400mm is great because I do both wildlife and landscape photography. A telephoto lens is really great when you need to zoom in to your scene and avoid unnecessary clutter. The smallrig L bracket is great when you need to switch from portrait to landscape or vice versa without having to compromise on your composition and also move your tripod. And lastly the jupio dual charger. I have just ordered it and I think it’s going to be really helpful. Charging 2 batteries at once is a boon when using a X-T3, the batteries do run out really fast.

I bought (created) my first ever professional quality photo book of my own landscape photos in the past 12 months. It has been one of the most valuable things I've ever bought in terms of photography. I saw my photos in print for the first time, and I just couldn't believe it. It brought back all the emotions and memories of every single photo, and took me back to those moments. It makes such an unbelievable difference to see your own images printed, rather than on a screen. It made it tangible, and I finally felt I could take my time to look at them and assess them.

  • @vacanechaser

I didn't buy it, but my wife got it for me for Christmas this past Christmas. Its a hoodman loupe which will allow you to see the back of your monitor while in bright bright conditions and or if you need to make sure that focus is critical, you can throw that up against your monitor and it allows you to see everything. It wasn't something I would've ever really considered but she thought about it as just a stocking stuffer for me and remembered me complaining about not being able to see when I have shot outdoor weddings just to check exposures and focus. Its perfect to chimp when needed and just to look at those details if its a critical shot. Love it

Thanks for the video Nigel. My very best purchase the last 12 months has to be my 70-200mm f/4 that I use on my D850. I did not know it will turn out to be my favorite lens and most fun to use. I live in a small city, and I've had my 24-70mm for the past three years now, so I hit a creative wall on what to shoot next. I thought I've already shot all landscapes that are worth it multiple times, in all seasons. Then I decided to buy the 70-200mm lens, and it got me excited again! It is so versatile, and lightweight. The focus is quick and the focus ring is smooth and easy to operate. I use it for landscapes, some wildlife, close-up shots for wild flowers and native grass @200mm with decent background blur and portraiture with very good subject isolation for my family. It does everything, and I enjoy having it on my camera. The ergonomics are just great and the lens is a joy to use.

The Leatherman is an absolute essential as a pro wildlife photographer. Fixing my cameras, attaching camera plates, just about anything you can think of, used it so often even at trade shows when working with clients to fix items or even stands. you're always the helpful person!
Also on the Z6 its a top class camera. Been using it since release and it keeps getting better with firmware, looking forward to more from the Z mount!

Probably my best purchase in the last year was a small collapsible white reflector. It's about 12 inches square and has a white side and a white/grey/black side. It folds up into a circle about 3 inches across and just drops into my pack. Custom video white balance takes about 10 seconds. Also adds a kiss of fill light for macro and close ups. It's great for a reference shot for white balance and fixing exposure in post. It swats flies, it's a lens hood, it keeps filters out of the muck, it keeps the sun off your face and rain off your lens... It's got a million uses that I haven't even discovered yet!

The best thing I have got in the last few months is super simple string that holds my glasses around my neck. I can't stress how bothersome it is to always look after where you put your glasses before looking through your viewfinder. Now I just throw them off and the string holds them safely.

Best purchase: I picked up a few Aputure MC RGB lights. Although they're primarily marketed to the video market (I'm a stills guy), these credit-card sized, self-powered lights provide lighting flexibility to place accent light wherever you need it, put light right next to a subject, output virtually any color (at any saturation!) thanks to their RGB design, and they weigh next to nothing. Coolest thing: you can control all settings from your smartphone, so that you're not going up on a ladder to readjust the light you just placed there. Why they're the best purchase: They've expanded my lighting scenarios, making new shots--and ways of thinking--before I even begin the shoot.

my favorite one was buying the kase filters after watching one of your videos mentioning kase. It makes putting on and taking off the filters so much easier. it's much less hassle, lighter, and most importantly it is so much easier for the cold seasons not having to screw / unscrew filters when wearing gloves.

I made two game changing purchases for myself in the last year. First, the Peak Design camera strap, which allows me easily to take off the strap when the camera is on a tripod. Second, and perhaps the best accessory purchase, is an Arca Swiss plate for the tripod and an L bracket for my Nikon D810. I bought a Manfrotto tripod before knowing much about other brands/types and I think it’s the only one that doesn’t use an Arca Swiss plate. It had always been a hassle trying to get my camera to stay straight in portrait mode, but it wasn’t until last year during a workshop, when I saw other photographers’ set-up, that I realized I was missing out and making my in-the-field photography workflow harder than it should have been. The Arca Swiss plate and L bracket combo has been such a bonus. At some point, I’ll look to upgrade my tripod, but I’m not in such a hurry anymore and can put the money toward another lens.

The best thing I bought in the past 12 months was not for me, but for my wife. I bought her a Canon G7x Mark II so that she can shoot her own photos while I take my time getting my shots. My best purchase was a Peak Design Capture Clip. My mobility has been decreasing over recent years and I find using two walking poles a great aid when out on location. I downsized to Olympus kit to save weight and bulk and have now added the Clip, so that my camera is readily available. I have the dual Manfrotto /Arca plate (not always easy to clip camera back on) and have now purchased a second clip to attach to my walking rucksack for when I am travelling light (EM1mkIII and 12-100 lens only). This has made so many more locations available again.

Peak Design Capture. I love how I can move and take photos while walking and not needing to open backpack when traveling or hiking. Also it is much more secure when walking in rough terrain in compared to a camera strap that can flap around. This thing when you clip it on the backpack stays there. It just allows me to take more pictures, and video and not miss any moment of it. I take pictures for memories and having your camera within 2 second reach is wonderful.

My best purchase was a Panasonic Lumix G95 camera and also a Lumix 25mm f1.7 lens to go with the kit lens. My last 'real' camera was a 1982 Minolta X-700 SLR. I quit using it around the year 2000 and have had Olympus and Canon point and shoot cameras since then. With the lock-down I decided to get back into photography with a multi-lens system. I love the G95 and have purchased a bunch of accessories to go with it, such as filters, cleaning kit, tripod, etc. I am shooting a birthday party later today and am still learning all the capabilities of the camera.

Mine is not so much a purchase but a tip. I bought a Tokina 11-16mm lens but it would not auto focus on my D5600. My eyesight is not great and even when I adjusted the diaopter in the view finder I still was guessing as to whether it would actually be in focus, then I read about Range finder!!! Wow! This has allowed me to get super sharp images using the inbuilt cameras ability to tell you if it's in focus! Absolute game changer and now I am loving this lens!!

Awesome video! Mine would have to be the peak design capture clip! I hated carrying my camera in my hand and used to miss so many shots with it stuffed in the bag! Now it's always clipped to my rucksack strap for easy access! Genuinely revolutionised my shooting!

Best purchase I made in the last year was moving from full frame Nikon to Fujifilm X series to save weight. The difference is amazing, I can fit much more gear into my camera backpack and still save a lot of weight and results in more comfort on long hikes and long days in the field.

Best recent purchase I've made is the Z6. My first full frame (and mirrorless) camera. I love the EVF - game changer! Second best purchase is a second Godox AD200 and the AD-B2 adapter. Makes for a very light weight, versatile lighting kit. And lastly I purchased a 36 inch EZ Glow softbox. It produces nice, soft, even light and is quick to setup. This pairs well with my AD200s.

I got a lowepro toploader camera carrier after seeing Ben Horne use it...basically you can use a caribiner and attach it to the strap of your backpack and it's so much easier to take photos while hiking. You can quickly pull out your camera from the toploader without having to take off your whole backpack, and it has a buncha useful side pockets for different things. Great $20 purchase.

Plus 1 for Kase magnetic filter system. The best in the world right now. Would never go back to screw-in, clip-on or slide-in filters after using this. Worth adding that customer service is second-to-none. Great company. Great products. Their K9 system is also superb for those who like to use grad filters.

My best purchase of the year is a 40-year-old Pentacon 50mm f1.8 and an adaptor to my D750. In lock down I got into macro and flower photography. I owned a Sigma 105 macro, but the Pentacon is so nice to use. Gives a lovely effect and was a fraction of the price of the Lensbaby modern day equivalent.

    Very interesting video!
My favourite gear I have bought is Sony 24mm 1.4 GM which is just amazing lens and so it is my 1st high grade lens it’s especially special for me. It helps me to get into wide angle portret photography world. Another thing that I’ve recently add to my gear is a AirPods Pro. It seems not related to photography at all, but it changes my way of shooting by helping me to be isolated ( noise cancellation) and get me overcome my shyness when I’m doing a street photography.

This was a huge purchase year for me as I transitioned and upgraded into mirrorless. Best purchase this year ... pricey, but the Canon RF 70-200 2.8L IS lens. Canon's RF lenses are awesome and this one is tack sharp, compact and light for the actual type of lens. I'm one of the rare people who decided to get the EOS R - and happy I did. Next best purchase, a huge batch of hand warmers. Tenba storage bags are wonderful. I have a small camera insert that can be used in bag or alone has seen plenty of use.

Best purchases was easy for me for the last year. Three lenses, all of them outstanding. After years of lusting after one, a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 G. Such a great lens, and I don't miss the extra aperture on the 1.4 at all, especially considering the difference in price. The second one, a Sigma 150-600 mm f/5-6.3 DG. First trip out in Kansas trying to photograph the buffalo at the Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife preserve. The buffalo didn't cooperate very well that day, but the lens is super. Light for its size, very fast accurate autofocus, sharp images. And last, the Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105 mm 1:28 G ED VR. Heavy in weight a bit, but what images, and what great feel in the controls and in the almost instantaneous autofocus when I am using that. Great gear I am very happy to have.

I bought a ThinkTank Urban access sling bag for my Fuji X-T20. I am able to fit the camera with 3 lenses in the bag. I went on a trip to New Zealand and needed something that I could carry around most of the time. I was also able to fit it into my Tenba Solstice backpack to reduce the amount of carry on luggage for air travel.

My best purchase in the past year was a roll of Ektar 100. I pulled out my high school graduation gift from 1985, a Nikon FG, (bought batteries) and started shooting. My goal is to slow down and be more methodical in my photography from composition to thinking through the exposure settings in order to get the finished product I want. Ultimately, I'll apply the learnings to my digital photography and instead of shooting too many photos will be able to take just a few to get the shot I want.

Not sure if I got it within the last 12 months, or a touch more but I absolutely love it!!! I just don't like the feel of a ball head. It seems like a fight every time I put the camera on it, but the "BIG BULKY" Gimbal Tripod Head (manual not powered) is by far the best mount I have. Yes, it's huge and heavy, but it is so stable and sturdy I love using it. I bought a NONAME brand to see if I would like it, and so far, I haven't even felt the need to upgrade it. Definitely a purchase I would do again.

Wireless remote trigger. Hands off the camera and especially when I have to hold a branch back or shield the lens with a hat. Many times I’m away from the camera and need to trip the shutter. Even portraits, so the subject doesn’t see you behind the camera... still lifes holding a background sheet. So useful!!

As you are new to Leatherman I would like to draw your attention to another of their products. It is the Micro Leatherman which has scissors rather than pliers. It includes a pen knife, screw driver, etc. It is small, relatively inexpensive and I carry one in my pocket every day, and have done so for more than 10 years. Highly recommended. I couldn't agree with you more when it comes to wide angles ... every mm at that end makes a huge difference. I've been involved with Nikon so long that I recall when they produced a 20 mm f3.5 lens (1968) for the Nikon F, to replace their 21 mm lens that required the mirror to be locked up and a clip-on accessory view finder. Later they came out with an 18 mm f4 (1974) which was WIDE (at least at that time). Many years later I acquired their 14 mm f2.8D, which I subsequently traded for the 14-24 mm f2.8 AF-S which I still have,

My recent purchase I really like is in March of this year I purchased the Hasselblad X1D-50c with a 45mm f/3.5 lens only and at first I thought this would really limit me but in all honesty it's actually helped me out a lot when it comes to taking photos and viewing scenes differently, I never really liked shooting with a tighter focal length. I still have my canon kit but I find myself reaching for this more as I have to work differently and the 3:4 ratio is so nice to work with.

I recently got a series of classic 'vintage' lenses (24mm FA* f/2 ; 28-70mm FA* f/2.8 ; 85mm FA* f/1.4 ; 80-200mm FA* f/2.8) for my upcoming full frame K-1 camera that I will receive next month. They're a nice addition to my 15mm and 150mm Macro FF primes. I know these are older lenses and are not designed for Digital in mind nor do they have weather seals, but they are part of the professional 'star' line of Pentax from the mid 90's and most of all did not bust to much my hard earned money. I do have to say that I am impressed by the quality of the glass as they are very sharp with my present APS-C K-5. I also got last winter a Canon Pro-1000 that I just adore. Can't wait to start shooting landscape with my upcoming K-1 and see the results on prints!

I bought a canon ixus 100 and this is what started my passion for photography. I knew it wasn't a super fancy camera, but taking pictures and learning more and more lead me to ask a friend to borrow his canon 5d II and then when I finally had the money (2016) I bought a cheap Sony A65 :D which I still use and still enjoy.
