Killer whales hunting a Humpback whale calf and eating its tongue!!!

  • Amazing never before seen footage of Orcas hunting a Humpback whale calf and consuming its tongue. Shot off the Baja California peninsula, Mexico.
While fully grown Humpback whales have little to fear from Orcas, their calves are a favorite prey item for the transient Killers that frequently visit the Baja California peninsula. Orcas are such successful hunters that they can afford to be picky eaters. In the case of whale calves they will often eat only the tongue and leave the rest of the carcass to scavengers.
The hunt went on for over an hour with the mother Humpback and and an escort fighting to fend of the Killers. Eventually, as is often the case, the Orcas prevailed. We then witnessed something truly incredible! The largest male in the pod spent over an hour circling our boat holding the young whale in his mouth, almost as if showing off their prize (we try not to assign human attributes to non-humans but in cases like this it is hard not to)! The Orcas then proceeded to eat the tongue of the young whale right below us, allowing us the opportunity to capture this unique footage.
It was a bittersweet experience. We love all Cetaceans and animals and were heartbroken as well as in awe as we watched these scenes unfold.

yes great footage and clear water ... this has been documented and filmed many times before off Western Australia. Also see The Hunt, a BBC documentary filmed in 2013 & 2014 released in 2016. Each year several hundred humpback calves are taken here, usually quite close to the reef. FYI - The killer whales in these parts often eat more of the calf than just the tongue ... though yes, the jaw and throat appears to be the first parts consumed. Also they do not have razor sharp teeth, rather quite blunt which makes their precision dissection of prey all the more impressive.

Coolio - Von Hoolio actually we do kill baby animals. Have you ever heard of veal? That’s baby cow, that is forced to live in a cage only big enough to lay down. The calf cannot stand up in the cage because it’ll toughen the meat so the cage is barely 2 ft tall. People who consume veal want the most tender meat.
Humans also eat lamb. Lamb is a baby sheep. 😬
The way we raise and butcher animals is also terrible sad. You may want to look into all this.

Killer whales are highly social; some populations are composed of matrilineal family groups (pods) which are the most stable of any animal species. Seems like it's the young orca feeding on the tongue.
Thought the others would've eaten the rest.
As much as I like whales and a fan of orcas, I do feel sorry for the younger whale and that it's mother couldn't protect the calf.
But it's part of nature like on land where predators hunt the sick, old, weak and young.
We need predators it's important to earth's ecosystem.
But this is first time I've seen orcas hunting a humpback. It's rare because normally humpbacks use their flippers and flukes (tail) to hit the orca in self defence.
Sometimes they leap out of the water and use their weight as a weapon to smash the orcas.
But despite humpbacks being most acrobatic of all whales, their defence doesn't always work.
I would say orcas hunting other whales the most I've seen is when they hunt grays, sei, fin, minke, porpoises and dolphins.
Even sperm whales I've seen too when orcas attack.
Also seen orcas hunting stingray, great white and tiger sharks.
    Squid and fish, seabirds, seals.
    Anyways
hunting humpbacks I have to say is the rarest I've seen
