  • Join us on an adventurous journey through the upper OKOY valley in Valencia, Negros Oriental, Philippines! We start our trip from Dauin, taking a slower but more exciting back road that includes navigating turnoffs and driving through a river. Our first stop is the charming plaza on Rizal Street in Valencia. From there, we head to the Okoy River and the nearby sulphur vents, where the real adventure begins.
Our mission is to explore the many campsites marked on Google Maps. Our first target, just a few hundred metres from the sulphur vents, is a campsite once known for its free-range rabbits. Unfortunately, it has been closed since the pandemic started, and the owner has emigrated. This initial search takes us around 30 minutes.
We encounter similar issues with other listed campsites: almost no signs and misleading directions from locals. Despite these challenges, we press on, taking whatever we can find.
Several signs lead us to the Moon Garden Resort, which is inaccessible by car. We leave our car behind and trek down, fully aware of the challenging return journey in the midday heat. At the resort, we enjoy hot and cold drinks and a simple pasta dish from a bag, soaking in the tranquillity of this serene spot.
Continuing our journey, we drive along a narrow mountain road that climbs higher and higher. We encounter an oncoming pick-up truck with warning flags and hazard lights, indicating a heavy goods vehicle behind. Watch out for these convoys, as they often carry heavy equipment.
Next, we arrive at Vista Panoramica, a small but serviced viewpoint with a mini swimming pool overlooking the valley. Here, we grab snacks and drinks from the kiosk and grill fresh fish, meat, or sausages. For a few extra pesos, we relax in a hammock next to the pool, enjoying the serene views.
Through the trees, we spot a geothermal plant nestled in the forest. Intrigued, we drive through the complex, where a security guard asks us a few questions before letting us pass. He directs us to a scrapped school bus at a junction where we should turn off.
Our final destination is the Belleza en Tierra Valencia Resort. We return to the first checkpoint, switch to the left side of the river, and arrive at the resort. Unlike the Red Rock hot springs, Belleza offers both hot and cold pools.
Although our plans didn't go exactly as expected, our Sunday adventure in the mountains of Negros Oriental was truly marvellous. Join us on this unforgettable journey!

It was a beautiful summer day in the upper Okoy Valley of Valencia in Negros Oriental, on the island of Negros, in the Visayas archipelago in the Philippines.
