  • Welcome back to Episode 5 of the Old School VS New School Analysis series. This week we're looking at a hand where I'm considering making a big laydown after turning the nut straight. This hand was from Super High Roller Bowl V where I was battling with all the Wizards.

It would be really interesting if you would analyze an older hand that you misplayed at the time based on your old school thinking that you would probably play correctly today.

It's so great to get a piece of your mind. The way you calculated in both the Old School and new School Ways was just brilliant. Many would have been tempted to call with the straight. But the way you realised that an Over bet made his chances of having a good hand much more than a bad hand was absolutely brilliant. Wow!!!

Great Video. One of my leaks now is underfolding and this is a great example of a spot where I'm doing it. Your note that in this specific situation (low connected paired board), your worst counterfeited two pair become your best bluff candidates is so good and helpful, though at the level I play at I don't think I'll be able to put it to use quite yet.

  • @callum8322

This such a great video Daniel, really nailed the obvious lay down and will surely help my game.
A slight twist to this format is a video on what would have gone through through your head if your opponent was a top 10 player. Like, if Phil made that over-bet, you wouldn't think he made a mistake in considering his own range. Would you have folder against Phil, or would you have thought he knew you would want to fold, so you bet.
The mind games at the final table must be insane.

Running this through the sim, Mikita's play is actually GTO approved on all streets. Though it prefers either 2/3psb or allin on the river with 99 it still does 1.5psb with some frequency. And facing the 1.5psb GTO sim thinks all Tx hands are a pure call in Daniel's spot
Not sure what to make of this. But characterizing Daniel's play as an exploitative adaption to a non-GTO bet sizing seems wrong?

    • @JohnBezy
      @JohnBezy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

The spot is probably quite underbluffed so as an exploitative move the fold is probably correct or at least not bad against most players. If daniel is struggling to come up with bluffs with all this time to think about the hand it is reasonable to think most players will have a similar problem. But yeah you have to assume your opponent isn't balanced here, and if you are playing a GTO bot the hand is just too strong to fold.

    • @dnegspoker

Daniel It's just amazing how good you became after that Doug Polk HU thing. Bravo!
Regarding this flop spot, I think JTs is not the worst on this board since those small suited Ax are far worse and also KQo have far less equity on this texture.
However it is correct that our bets should be more equity driven here. So JTs makes perfect sence to bet. I do believe we should play rather tight here as OOP since Nikitas range is much stronger/tighter than ours.

Far better to call with 10 9 and 10 8 in this spot than 10 J. Perhaps you only have 10 9 suited combos so call with them and medium/small boats and fold everything else apart from 67 suited which would be a great check/raise river bluff candidate to balance out your best boats and quads ... very cool hand!

I've done this many times and people call me crazy when I say I folded bottom boat or a straight on a paired board. What I did to figure it out was what Daniel is talking about. You play the hand back in your head, give them their ranges and frequencies. On the river you have a very specific group of ranges.
Once I flopped a bottom boat and the paired card was trips on the board by the river. The 90 year old villain bet 1/6th pot on the river right after he looked up at the high hand board. I had position - Action went XB(overpot)C(rest folded), BRC (3 flush), B and I folded. The forums thought I was nuts for folding for a 1/6th pot. But is old man coffee really betting anything but quads there into me or maybe middle boat? He has zero bluffing range and would never bet a flush. "Did I get the high hand?" as he showed quads lol.
So yea just because it looks like pots odds justify a call in some situations you can figure out their range and justify a fold like this. One caveat though.... vs a maniac you just close your eyes and call. You can't read his hand. You just value range yours.

I go broke in that hand 100% of the time, with or without New v. Old. I would get it all in on the turn (to protect my hand) get called from behind, by the set, knowing he is beat by a straight, drawing to a set without a doubt, guy would then utter, "Call, I knew you had a straight, nice hand, pair the board" and blammo. Then apologize for getting it in ugly and jinxing me on purpose with the "nice hand" remark. Neverfails😂
