The whole NYADA storyline (particularly Cassie) made me really excited when it started. FINALLY, I thought, Rachel is going to have some actual struggles and character development. I was so wrong, it made her ten times more intolerable.

If you look carefully Rachel rolls her eyes after she told someone to lose some weight. It’s brief but Cassandra clearly saw. ( she probably think this freshman did not roll her eyes at me in my class) and sadly it’s how the entertainment business is it’s really stupid but it’s Broadway to most roles you probably have to be quite lean.

Cassandra was a bitch & a drunk and went out of her way to harass Rachel and pick on her!
Maybe Rachel did need to open her eyes and realize that she wasn't the star of the show & Cassandra felt she needed to put Rachel in her place but draw a line somewhere. Cassandra purposely went out of her way to treat Rachel like shit and embarrass her in front of the entire class! And I'm sorry but I don't think Cassandra was anything special I'm sorry but I don't.

If you can’t keep up or if your feelings get hurt because you’re punching a little above your required weight, you’ll lose and end up back in the small hometown you came from. I've heard that dancer Tommy Rall (mostly sung and danced on Broadway but who's film credits include Funny Girl, My Sister Eileen, The Second Greatest Sex, Invitation to Dance, Kiss Me Kate and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) once said "I think you have to love music and dance because this business is so difficult. If you don't love the art and just want to be a star then I think you're a dead duck." For the record, Donald O'Conner once said that he was 'above Astaire and Kelly' and Gene Kelly once said that he was 'the greatest dancer MGM had ever had'. Jacques D'Amboise of the New York Ballet and founder of the National Dance Institute also commented on his skills in his book 'I was a Dancer'. Rachel wants to be a star, she's made that abundantly clear since episode 1. But sometimes I wonder if she really loves the music and the art more than she loves the spotlight - or at least if she loves to dance as much as she loves to sing. I don't want to sound cruel, but sometimes I feel that she wants to be a star more than she wants to sing. If it's any consolation his words made me doubt Nina from 'Black Swan' more than Rachel, as we really don't see any sign that Nina actually loves dancing.

Flashback to 'The Red Shoes' - the ballet movie from the 1948, similar in some ways to 'Black Swan' but more of an actual dance movie than a psychological movie with dance doubles.
When the main character Vicki comes for a brief teaching session at a prestigious ballet company, she finds the lead dance instructor and tell him that the ballet director must have spoken to him about her and that he'd invited her personally to come in and the instructor says:
"Oh, this is too much. He invite them, I teach them, I get rid of them, he forgets them! And now, unhappy girl, you will please go and wait in the wings, where you will find five other young ladies who have also been invited by Mr Lermontov's hospitality."

I don't understand why so many in the comment say Rachel's "eye roll" (barely) was disrespectful. Are you implying that you should actually shut your mouth and agree with someone (teacher or not) straight up making anything she can to make you feel crap on the first day, right after she gave nutrition advice (when clearly NOT her job) to a student without knowing that student's background?
I agree Rachel needed to hear she was no diva and still needed to train super hard to achieve her real dream. (even if I think you should never say to someone they suck, because that could be a lifetime taint on their well-being)
But that particular "drop the pounds" reaction was perfectly understandable and anyone acting as Rachel at that moment would have been perfectly in their own right. It's not because you are a student that you should accept abuse from teachers.
At least, that's how I feel about it.

I've been in many plays. Cassandra wasn't just doing her job, she was plain mean. Rachel didn't roll her eyes because she thought she was the best, she rolled her eyes because Cassendra has no right discriminating someone because of their weight. Being mean is being mean. There are a lot of non skinny actresses and Broadway people. If she was doing her job she would of said something about her dancing, singing, or about how her outfit is inappropriate for this line of work. She made a unprofessional mean comment. There's no way around that. Personally Rachel isn't my favorite either, but what's right is right. Rachel's rolling of the eyes was disrespectful but so was Cassandra's comment.

If you hate Rachel just know that glee let Rachel down, this character could've gone so much further than where it went. She had the least character development out of the lead cast members, and her storyline was so inconsistent it just failed to go where it should've gone. I loved this scene and how she struggled because back home, Rachel was THE star. But in New York, she was just one out of many and has to fight to get that status again, so the fact that she gave up NYADA AND Broadway by the end of season 5 makes zero sense because the Rachel we followed for four seasons wouldn't have done that.

They need to graduate and move on, there is an unlimited number of talented kids available to keep the show going forever. They threw away a lot of talent to keep Rachel in the plot line.

I mean Cassandra was really offensive and also triggering. She shouldn’t have said those things about their weight. Just told them they need to be HEALTHY to do this successfully. I get teaching them this business is a war zone, but assuming a student’s talent, drive, snd personality isn’t what a TEACHER should do. She’s supposed to correct their mistakes and help them do better. They aren’t paying for a dance class to just get put down or humbled. That’s someone else’s job at the college. Her job is to get her students to improve their dancing abilities 🙄
I like how she knew Rachel was entitled from the start, but she was also just a bitch to her when she didn’t show any disrespect (yet). Like who cares if she said she is from Ohio? Uh John Legend, Tracy Chapman? She just said she wants to learn MEANING she knows she is the best thing out there. Cassandra was later in the right with Rachel, but not in this scene.
Rachel is so entitled, egotistic, and selfish. Sure, she worked hard but she doesn’t deserve what she got. She then took it all for granted and was disrespectful to every mentor. Cassandra wasn’t putting up with it. She knew somebody had to humble her. That’s why her, Santana, and even Kurt are my favorites cause they know when to put Rachel in her place. I really wish she never got prom queen, almost every solo and win, a second change into NYADA, a broadway lead with no experience, and then a TV offer. She is talented, but not the most talented or the only one who deserves to win. That said, most of her wins were just given to her to shut her up or out of pity.

Coming from someone who's had 7+ years of dance experience with plenty of “my way or the highway” type teachers, I really don't know. It never accomplishes anything truly. Sure it may work in the moment but then the student may be afraid to sing, dance, etc ever again in fear of being screamed at for just learning. Of course, that's not to say to coddle your students but to construct them in ways that it will build them up and not break them down. I've know plenty of people who never want to dance again just because of mean teachers. These teachers are supposed to lift spirits, but instead they crush them. I guess their thought process is that “if I'm mean enough then they can handle anything” which is an ignorant way to look at things. Some people do thrive off of that type of teaching, but most do not. It truly depends on the person but even then I would start slow and pick it up once you know what they are capable of.

And the comments this thread with all the "poor, poor Rachel. Cassandra is bullying her.." crap are EXACTLY why the current generation cannot handle ANYTHING. Any time someone so much as cuts a finger, it is straight to the whining and crying and they hurt me attitude. You were coddled. Everyone coddled you because the government was afraid you would break. You weren't taught to handle hardship, losing, competition, insults, bullying, sportsmanship, authority, being told NO....NOTHING. And that's why you can't handle anything now. This? What Cassandra is doing? Is REALITY. Something Rachel never had to come across before COLLEGE and NYC. Nobody ever told her no. Nobody ever told her she sucked. No normal human would ever be able to walk into a glee class with tape over their mouth in protest for not getting their way. What Cassandra did was teach from a reality point of view. That's the real word people. Whether it's Broadway or the corporate office, which is another thing you all can't handle.
Stop whining. Suck it up and learn to DEAL. Your future will depend on it.
