You are fearless. Great work on describing the problem. Just enough detail to keep the process interesting. Looking forward to seeing the progress and end result of your efforts.
I'm going to be in the market for an older C6 and due to my budget, chances are I'll have to settle for an early 2005 or 2006 manual transmission so it will end up being an LS2 rather than LS3. Great channel my friend
I’m not a mechanic, but to me common sense says, pull the engine and disassemble it , hot tank and take install new bearings and fix whatever is needed . While at it, and engine is removed check the clutch and rest of drivetrain . Yes , very intensive and expensive, but metal shavings in the oil is never a good sign. Good luck on your project , you will learn much !
Damn this sucks dude, glad you got through it but I’m just tired of the C6 fanboys swearing the LS3 is the most reliable corvette engine ever lol. They aren’t 100% bulletproof. Just tired of the constant flack the C7 gets. Yes cylinder deactivation puts a huge amount of stress on the lifters but there are ways to keep it from turning on. The king of reliability might just be the LS1
Didnt idle the car for more than 10 mins after the noise started, based on the damage it was very likely the problem had been going on for longer but surprisingly it didnt start making noise till it was too late
I hope you get the GS on the road again. It’s a beautiful car with great performance. I have an 08z and absolutely love it. I don’t plan on tracking the car but was going to get the valve guides corrected but my mechanic suggested leaving it alone. What’s your take on it or have you any insight on the LS7? By the way I love your channel, keep up the great content.
@ddarkknight13 from what I've heard the LS7 makes great power, but the valve train is the weak point, those engines tend to drop valves when the guides get worn, and apparently it happens to all of the, its just a wear item on those engines, aswell as the lifter buckets. Other than that, the Z06s are solid cars and have a lot more performance than GS for close to the same price. Thanks for the support!
damn bro that sucks, im considering a 2005 corvette base model with about 70k miles how common is this issue? Just watching your videos im feeling the pain
Jeez, I was looking at used C6 corvettes as a weekend car. I can do basic stuff like brake jobs, shock changes, and oil changes but not this in depth. Should I change my mind about getting one of these? How much would this job be if I brought it to a mechanic?
@Brian they are great cars for the price. If you are looking for one of these either get one with very low miles, around 30k or one that has had the common issues taken care of. If you get one that is modified, make sure they used good name brands. Almost anything in a vette is gonna be expensive as far as labor due to the way they are designed. Something as simple as a cam job, or a clutch job can cost up to 3k in labor.
@@PushingGears thanks for the reply. I might have to rethink this. I couldn't believe I could get a Corvette in good condition for around the same price as a 370z. But I guess the cost comes later on.
The corvette engine is a LS engine almost like a honda civic engine. Very easy to work on and maintain. IF i were you I would get a Corvette. After the points go off my license for speeding its the next car I'm getting because its cheap to maintain
So I am new to the channel and I see that you are a tech @ Toyota. Does that mean your Toyota issued shirt never gets dirty because Toyota’s Never Break? Scotty Kilmer would be very proud. Hey I wonder if Scotty would give us HIS opinion of what’s going on here 😳
Ive worked for different companies, but I like to take extra uniforms that i didnt wear at work and just use em for work at home. Scotty kilmer taught me everything i know lol he already made a video saying corvettes are trash to work on
The LS3 is NOT prone to lifter failure if properly maintained (correct oil changes) and not abused with improper mods or beating the fuck out of it. Has that engine been modified in the past (non oem cam)?
@Red_Sled Lol I didnt specify on this video, but the lifters are not the problem. Those plastic lifter buckers are 100% a common wear item on these LS engines. When they get worn the lifter spins and this happens. Very common for LS engines, happens all the time after 75k miles. Most of the time it will create a lifter noise before it gets to this extreme. This was a rare case of severe damage with no noise coming from the valve train until too late. The engine was completely stock, even air filter and exhaust
@@PushingGears Ls1 same buckets still perfect at 130,000. My 08 ls3 has bolt ons and is track(1/4 mile) at least 3-4 times a year. 90,000 miles. 11.8 121.33mph. So 10's with a mild stall and 1.8 rockers. Stock converters in the A6 are super tight with 2:56 gears and a 27" tall tire. When I change rebuild the trans Ill put in a 2400 power adder yank I have and try 26" dr tires. They say it will drive like stock but get a 1.5 60ft. Got a set of gmpp ported heads, fast 102 and Moral link bar lifters going on after. keeping the stock cam for the 30 mpg sleeper sound. lol.
Dude. Respect your balls at attempting to tackle the problem. I hope you got a good result. I'm about a year late in seeing your video. With your attitude and energy, you should consider some serious training (mechanic school?) and become a Corvette expert. There is definitely a niche out there for such people. Respectfully, M
@Eloy Herrera I hope you dont run into this problem, although the harmonic balancer is gonna go out if it hasnt already, and thats 75% of the work to replace it
@Touge Evo if you are in the market for one either get a low mileage one and ypu will put a lot of miles on it before running into amy of these issues, or get one that already has all the common failure points replaced with performance upgrades, but not severely abused! They are very rewarding cars to drive!
Some of the best and most informative C6 content on TH-cam
Appreciate you watching!
I'm an aircraft technician and I feel your pain! I appreciate such an honest presentation.
I have a 2007 C6 automatic with 110,000 miles.
You are fearless. Great work on describing the problem. Just enough detail to keep the process interesting. Looking forward to seeing the progress and end result of your efforts.
Very realistic video full cridet for showing the entire process. Good luck with the rebuild.
Just bought a C6 Grandsport brother! This video came along at a great time for me, especially seeing a comprehensive breakdown on the engine
Thanks for the support! More quality videos coming for this build series within the next couple weeks so subscribe to catch em.
Beautiful car! Excellent video. I like the non editing and true content. Very informative video

Dude, you're funny. I got a base c6, intake headers xpipe. Thinking about a mild cam or new torque converter to get me to 450whp.

damn c6 corvettes be treating you like that
How long did you drive it like this, I'm trying to see if my cam still has a chance if not oh well time to upgrade maybe rebuild time...

Z06s are more likely to have valve issues. This lifter issue is not as common on LS3s but it can happen.
@@PushingGears i was looking for a c6 corvette and ended up with a 2011 mustang gt, c6 are damn expensive
Feel bad for you bro.
What wheel spacers do you have on your car rear and front
GM. That kind of issue is inexcusable these days.
you look familiar

I have heard the new Ls3 crate engine has more pony's than stock. The new GM Ls3 has just dropped in price a lot. Dirt cheep!
EXCELLENT!
fire!
If the cam journal on cam wer good u bearings are good
@Robert Martinez the bearings where definetly not good lol you can see em on my other upload

Why is it bad to work on?
You have to remove so many components to replace a simple part
