9:14 to address your comment on this thing “not being serviceable”; you are correct! There is no easy way to drain the fluid in these things. I just discovered myself after watching about a dozen videos of people drilling and installing a drain plug in the bottom of these PTU. Just did the work yesterday, pretty scary, but now I can easily change out the oil.
Thanks for posting this video. I just pulled the PTU out of a 2015 XSport with a 3.5 Ecoboost. I think the guys that are saying you dont need to mess with the subframe dont have a turbo in the way. I wound up disconnecting the front end of the drive shaft and carrier bearing support and wiring it out of the way. same with the dual exhaust from the second cat to the mufflers. Pulled the two giant power steering bolts and shifted the whole power steering assembly to the right about 1 1/2". You dont need to disconnect it from the tie rods or the steering column shaft. there is enough play to shift it over. The rear subframe bolts were big and scary but once they broke loose they came right out. Removing those bolts and brackets was probably the easiest thing I did on the whole job. The subframe then can be lowered about 3-4" and the PTU slips up and over the crossmember.
My daughter has a 2009 that had the same problem. Your video/verbals saved me. The scariest part for me was getting the converter bolts loose without rounding nuts/breaking studs. WD 40 the day before and 2 heat/cool cycles with Mapp gas and WD 40 worked for me. Still took a breaker bar to get them loose. And yes, the oxy sensor connector was a bitch. I broke the cat bolts loose, left the connector “connected” and the cat loosely in place, then dropped the cradle as you suggested. That let me get my hands in to discon. the elec. connector. There are now up-graded units with drain plugs. Recommend to drain fluid every 31,000 miles. Hard to fill from the drain plug. Most people will extend the vent hose so after the unit is drained, you can fill from the vent hose by putting an extension on the hose and then put the vent cover on that hose extension. I will flush the PTU before I add new oil. I flush with Engine Flush. Make sure it is all drained out. When I put the unit on the hoist, I will start the engine and put it in drive, run the PTU for about 1 minute with the flush in it, the flush will drain out quickly as it is basically kerosene. After it is well drained I add my Ford brand recommended fluid. The PTU will be as good as new with all the dirt out. The new Ford PTU has the drain plug and an added heat sink to keep it cool. The issue is that the finned heat sink seems to pick up more heat from the catalytic converter than the heat sink is supposed to dissipate. The PTU will always go bad if you do not drain every 30,000 miles. The PTU need more oil capacity and a heatsink that works. They need to make it so you can fill from the top with a longer vent-hose so you will not have to modify the revised Ford PTO, which they revised with a drain plug and heat-sink in 2016. Undrained PTO's will fail around 60,000 Miles and the oil will look like mud.
The dipstick at the end is for the transaxle, not the PTU. The PTU is a sealed box, like you noted, 'unserviceable'. Though it should be serviced regularly otherwise it will fail, like the one replaced.

Instead of lowering the cradle I ratchet strapped the bottom of the motor forward, lowered the tcase a couple inches and turned sideways it dropped right out
one last question- The Edge I am working on is a 2014 AWD- the RH intermediate shaft goes through the PTU inward to the vehicle- is there a circlip needed on the end spline that goes through the PTU? The repair manual is not specific, and in your video, you make no mention of a circ clip. My axle assembly was not taken apart, I removed it in one piece as you did in the video, from what I have read, the intermediate shaft is retained in the transaxle differential side gear by the bolts that go through the support shaft bearing. Is there a circ clip needed on the RH, inward, intermediate shaft that passes through the PTU to the transaxle?
Were you getting any vibration? Mine is vibrating. Had it to a garage and they said it had a bad drive shaft, so I had them put one in, but it still vibrates.
My oem ptu burnt up. I replaced it at the repair shop, and the seal/gasket started leaking. Now I'm replacing after 5 months and getting charged 600 in labor for the second time.
A seal is a seal, and not a mechanical element needing lubrication. If you see lubricant around a seal, it has either failed or someone didn't clean up after a recent installation.
I guess it would depend. Like if you are going to fix the problem, and not the cause. Why is it leaking? Bad seal, or junk t-case? That's the real question that I do not have an answer for.
When I did mine...you don’t have to remove the whole drive shaft...don’t have to drop K-frame (ratchet wrench gets the two bolts on drivers side)... don’t need to remove steering shaft... total time with new brakes and rotors and clean up Took 7 hours total
I bought a replacement PTU it says that I have to Replace Or Verify The Transmission Output Shaft Seal Is in good condition Did your replacement unit come with the Output shaft seal already installed?

@@rickh633 - Well I still have the 2013 Explorer 135,000 miles with the PTU in question here. Have really had no problems with it. I did drill and tap a drain for the PTU and change the oil in it now after I caught it puking black sludge out of the vent. My problem with Ford is they knew about this PTU issue overheating. I know this because they routed ducting to it from underneath to try to direct air to cool the PTU. They did this instead of installing the PTU with a cooler and drain plug which they use for the police version. Pretty easy fix. Another example of not fixing known issues is the Ford Escape. Now, the drive train on these (2004 - 2012) are solid but they suffer from severe rust issues. The rear passenger shock mount and wheel well rusts so bad that people make kits to fix it when the shock rust off. I made my own on our 2005 years ago but most people just junk the cars when it breaks. You can’t find an older Escape (anroind here in the rust belt) that the rear wheel wells aren’t completely destroyed by rust. Ford allowed the design to propagate for nearly a decade. That’s criminal especially considering it’s lower income people who typically own these. I think it’s pretty easy to fix, just mount a plastic wheel well cover to prevent road spray from hitting the metal. If Ford would have addressed this they might have built an iconic car like the Camry, early RAV4 or CRV, oh well. Current stable: 2005 Escape 206,000 miles (kids car now) 2006 Escape 195,000 miles ( winter beater) 2012 RAV4 75,000 miles 2013 Explorer 135,000 miles (doesn’t see winters anymore)

Bless mechanics that do this. I couldnt take more then 5 minutes under therr
Instead of lowering the cradle I ratchet strapped the bottom of the motor forward, lowered the tcase a couple inches and turned sideways it dropped right out
“Cheap shit, Ford shit”. Lmao glad I’m not the only one cussing at working on Fords. Great job man.
Thanks for the video ! That looks like a pain in the ass !
one last question- The Edge I am working on is a 2014 AWD- the RH intermediate shaft goes through the PTU inward to the vehicle- is there a circlip needed on the end spline that goes through the PTU?
The repair manual is not specific, and in your video, you make no mention of a circ clip. My axle assembly was not taken apart, I removed it in one piece as you did in the video, from what I have read, the intermediate shaft is retained in the transaxle differential side gear by the bolts that go through the support shaft bearing.
Is there a circ clip needed on the RH, inward, intermediate shaft that passes through the PTU to the transaxle?
Just stick it in the hole.
@@RustBeltAuto I did!
thank you i love the comentary .i get pissed about the same things
Strange I'm looking at this after installing a used trans... Now the seal is leaking! Here I am seeing if there tip to removal lol
No golden horse shoe for you. Thanks for watching!
Rust Belt Auto I just put ultra grey RTV on the Outer rubber seal, I'll upload video tomorrow. Have a good one bro lol
I would like to know if you can disable the ptu if you get in a spot so you can continue driving it.
Maybe pulling the front drive shafts.
I don't know.
Pull the rear driveshaft out and pull the AWD fuse and it'll be front wheel drive. The little "wrench" light will stay on though.
Were you getting any vibration? Mine is vibrating. Had it to a garage and they said it had a bad drive shaft, so I had them put one in, but it still vibrates.
A vibration, other than a tire, on an AWD car, can be a very difficult thing to diagnose. This had none. Good luck.
Excellent video , help me so much thank you!
My oem ptu burnt up. I replaced it at the repair shop, and the seal/gasket started leaking. Now I'm replacing after 5 months and getting charged 600 in labor for the second time.
Issue just popped up, is there a chance changing oil will help or if i hear noise is it already too late
Probably too late.
Good job, very informative.
excellent video. going to give it a go. thanks
Would anyone know if a seal is considered an internally lubricated part of the transfer case?
A seal is a seal, and not a mechanical element needing lubrication. If you see lubricant around a seal, it has either failed or someone didn't clean up after a recent installation.
@@pt68picaso ok, thanks.
Wait so is it better to replace the whole PTU/transfer case than seal one that’s leaking??
I guess it would depend. Like if you are going to fix the problem, and not the cause. Why is it leaking? Bad seal, or junk t-case? That's the real question that I do not have an answer for.
Thanks for the video. Just curious how much time it actually took you to swap out the ptu? Thanks
I don't know.
When I did mine...you don’t have to remove the whole drive shaft...don’t have to drop K-frame (ratchet wrench gets the two bolts on drivers side)... don’t need to remove steering shaft... total time with new brakes and rotors and clean up Took 7 hours total
Michael Langstaff 7 hours??? Should be less than 2 + .5 for brakes.
@@larryreno8293 yeah took me like 3 with lowering subframe and disconnecting steering shaft
@@DonLapwig well done
Just had my customer come back in with hers and the whole end of her transfer case where the driveshaft goes in has snapped off
I bought a replacement PTU it says that I have to Replace Or Verify The Transmission Output Shaft Seal Is in good condition Did your replacement unit come with the Output shaft seal already installed?
I hope so. It was new, and I didn't put one in.
@@RustBeltAuto thank you - I have followed your video step by step with one exception I did not disconnect the steering column or completely disconnect the exhaust, so far it has been smooth and actually, not very hard at all the hardest part of the whole process has been that s3ckn sensor up above the cat- it sucked re connecting it - even with the heat shield etc out of the way
Thanks my case is broken so looks like I need to do a replacement
Yeah, I was surprised a large company like Ford wouldn't put a drain plug on them. I changed one, also was sure it was spotless clean inside, then drilled and tapped a plug in.
The old one popped a hole in side and the oil was like tar at that point. Had just over 300,000 kms ir 180,000 miles on it.
Thanks for making this helpful video
You're welcome.
Is the 2015 PTU the same part ?
You're going to need to look the part up on Ebay, or car-part.com, to see for yourself.
Enjoyed it. My PTU got a drain plug put in. Sorry engineers.
What are some signs of this going bad ?
It puked sludge out the vent, and transmission fluid out the seals.
The car is worse on snow than a front wheel drive model.
Great video.. including the bitching. "Gimme my shit!"
hahaha!
Sorry man, I had to laugh because I know you cut out the worst of it. I usually throw at least one thing and break it before the job is over.
How many hours does that job give I just replaced one but not sure what to charge
I don't know
Oh ok thanks
What happens after you change the transfer case does your mileage of the car change ?
The mileage of the transfer case changes.
@@RustBeltAuto OK because I bought a transfer case with 53,000 miles is there anyway to find out if they put the transfer case I bought in my car with the 53,000 miles

do you have the torque specs for everything you put back on?
I do not.
How much would a job like this cost in a shop I have a 2007 ford edge AWD and am having the same problem?

Just got a price of 2500 dollars to replace the PTO (transfer case) in my 08 Ford Edge AWD. Went out after 225k miles.
I'm dealing with mine now. That's B's how much it cost for the part alone thank God I m a mechanic so I don't have to pay labor on top of a 2k dollar part
How much for install
I have no idea.
Good thing I have a fwd version
Basically. Drill and tap it, put your own plug in, be religious with the changes to avoid this lol.
Why didn't Ford think of that?
@@RustBeltAutodunno. But atleast its not like a harley davidson.
Two extra wheels??? I just worked on a car and said to the person "you know, the only reason why I'm working on your car, is because you are a dumbass." He did not disagree. I will rephrase your answer by saying "at least it is not something that makes sense", because your answer is not really an answer. I don't think it is even a pun. In fact, I don't know what it is. Probably something that is supposed to be better than worse, so it is supposed to be okay or something. My parents used to say stuff like that to me. Like if it is worse than total crap, it's not that bad, because anything better that total crap is good. I don't talk to them any more. My mind doesn't compute. Excuse me while I drink more Sake.
How much for you to replace mine?
I dont know
I've gotten the PTU fluid changed at 75,000 then at 80,000. Had I not, it would be shot before 90k. What a fucking flaw in the PTU design in this day and age. We want out drain plug.
Did someone use a machine to suck it out, or did someone actually fabricate a drain plug?
9:55 “Give me my shit” LOL
Que falla provoca?
Since when did sealed washing machine transmissions find their way into automobiles? Cute little thing belongs in a Power Wheels Jeep.
Too bad it was engineered by one of those cost saving millennial a$$hats. Fraction of a quart of oil...no filtering, cooling...no way to drain or flush. Brilliant!
Power Transfer Unit
Here I thought is was something that starts with the word poop. Especially given the fact that there is no drain plug, and it cannot be serviced, Thanks for watching!
Built Ford tough. Grrrr. Perhaps someone can make a video on that. Stabbing a drill bit into a case full of junk parts, so you can watch some black sludge ooze out of it. Fun! I'm sorry, but it is hard for me to leave a comment without being sarcastic. I have never seen.......... Just exactly when should you change the fluid on a non serviceable part with no maintenance schedule anyways?
@@RustBeltAuto According to my service manual you need a suction gun to deservice and service this. There are a few different variations to the PTU and the newer don't leak as easily, have drain plugs and oil coolers attached. But overall thanks for the video it was extremely helpful as I have to do this to my explorer and it is very similar.
@@tourerv1jz interesting. I have never thought sucking fluid out of a case was a good idea. All the crud is on the bottom, and sucking out fluid leaves it in there. Is there a recommended mileage for servicing it?
@@RustBeltAuto According to the Ford factory service manual I have it says that it is serviced for life if it has their specific fluid in it. However after lots of research I have found that the oil has been sludging up and failing causing the PTU to be replaced. Lots of people have been drilling the case and installing a drain plug. I am planning on doing that. th-cam.com/video/KQWh5cp2ZEc/w-d-xo.html
Change the fluid don't listen to ford lifetime recommendation
People really think the ptu fliud is lifetime!!!😂😂😂 no fliud is lifetime "FORD"
I guess it depends on how old it gets?
Ford shit no drain plug.. Suck fluid out every 30,000 I hear?
What a piece of crap
Ford knew this transfer case was crap Ford didn't care. What a great video showing Fords design flaws. These cars should drop 3K in value for garbage transfer case. Joke..lol on the consumer..Ford...bye bye bye
sadly all of them are this way , GM other companies have there share of issues... and yes it pisses us all off..but as a mechanic for 20 years, after 2000, I tell people all cars are junk because they are built like shit on purpose and charge us x10 more for them..
Recon - Design errors are made, S - - t happens my issue with Ford is they continued to use the design for at least 7 years! I won’t be back with Ford. I’ll give Toyota a shot and see how that plays out.

Well I still have the 2013 Explorer 135,000 miles with the PTU in question here.
Current stable:
2005 Escape 206,000 miles (kids car now)
2006 Escape 195,000 miles ( winter beater)
2012 RAV4 75,000 miles
2013 Explorer 135,000 miles (doesn’t see winters anymore)
Jesus, what a fucking nightmare.....no thanks!
It was supposed to be much more difficult according to Ford.
