I've always liked Steve's reviews, but this is flat out missing the point of the car, bordering on stupidity. This should have been done the way Motor Trend reviewed the LC500. I truly believe the owner buying this car with the plan to track it *does not exist.* So why review the car as though that's what it's for? It not supposed to be the ultimate Ferrari. It's supposed to be a *grand tourer* for retired CFO's that want to take a Sunday drive on a nice day or likes driving but *needs* a comfortable ride to see the grandchildren who live 3 hours away. That's the reason for the feeling in the braking and steering. That's the reason the HVAC works the way it does. Taking the wife on a date? Portofino. Feel like hitting those corners on a quick grocery run? 488. Wanna show you're actually the CEO, demanding respect as soon as you step out of the car? Well any Ferrari, but the 812 will do that best. Each car has it's purpose and should be reviewed as such.
Mate you should be a journalist, you completely understand Ferrari's model range. For what it is this will be a seriously hard car to beat in it's class. They will sell like hot cakes to middle-aged CFO's and all the new breed of female millionaire's
This isn't for the retired CFO, they'ed be buying their third or fourth Ferrari, a classic. This is for people buying their first Ferrari, entry level; safer, cheaper. This is for the CFO ten years before he/she's CFO, and 15 years before they retire.
Oh! Have I offended you, little buddy? It wasn't my intent. Didn't realise you were such a delicate flower. Would you like a hug? Here I was thinking you wanted more accuracy in your made up little story. Apparently, Ferrari has estimated that about 70% of Portofino sales will be to first time Ferrari buyers, with a younger average age than usual first time purchasers. Borderline stupidity on my behalf. You have won the internet again, Jeff. I'm also really sorry about the lack of *bold* in my original comment.
Ferrari nailed this car. I drove one a few months back, awesome. and in a year two when prices start to drop, I'll be in for sure. This car can do it all. Looks great, top up, top down.
Steve Sutcliff is my all time favorite auto analyst. I would be watching a lot more auto videos if he reviewed more of them. He's very honest, and great at giving his expert opinions about cars. Thanks for the great reviews, Steve.
Considering the success and age of the California, I am a little surprised that some of the larger lower priced badges still haven’t tried to make a “beautiful but not terribly impractical” four seat convertible.
I drove the California and 458 Italia back to back against a Lambo - liked that the Ferrari’s paddle shift was steering mounted rather than fixed to the steering column in the Lambo - allowing more intuitive gear change in cornering - notice Ferrari now changed over to column mounted paddleshift?
A significant improvement over the California. This is the perfect car for those who don't care that much about racing cars but still want (and afford) a hard top convertible with the thrill of a real Ferrari. And you can walk in the dealership, write a check and leave driving it. Not all that nasty and uncertain business of waiting, upgrading, etc. with the other Ferrari models that "experts" praise.
Hector Morena “Experts” have become unreal and only praise the highest of high end and do not account normal people and actual buyers. It still is a beautiful, 600hp true ferrari, and it does a fantastic job. Hassle-free is a big deal to any actual buyer and new customers, yet experts downgrade it buy they wont ever buy one.
"Experts" only care about pure performance and nothing else, because they don't have to spend their own money. They don't look at it from a potential owner's point of view.
I'm glad you got it too. I think that this is a matter of prestige amongst critics. If an "expert" does not find "buts and ifs" in this Ferrari, then he would be looked down by his peers. Anybody can realize that indeed this is a crappy review of the car for those who are the real potential buyers. Didn't even show the interior of the car, features, etc. Just a ride to say "well, the feedback is not totally there.....".
Hooray Ferrari, at last you have made a decent amazing car for the gentleman and not exclusively for the Nutcase Showman. This is what I have been waiting for all my life - a decent yet flashy, amazing sport car with all the goodies to feel that you have a fine piece of engineering under your control to thrill you as you please I was reluctant to look at the 2019 Ferrari model thinking it could be yet another model for the fancy gigolo but finally thought let's have a look anyway and the Portofino surprised me to the hilt. Now it is an agonizing wait until I grab my dream Ferrari. Thank you guys for coming into proper sense to cater for the gentlemen who sigh for a Ferrari.
review sucks.. this is an everyday use ferrari not a track oriented ferrarii.... you already said that from the start of the review... stop nit picking!!!!
You seem to be testing it as a track car, It’s a Grand Tourer. You said yourself how compliant the suspension is. If Ferrari wanted it as a track car then they would have put track suspension on it.
Great review as ever, first class feedback from a great race driver. Clearly this car isn’t a track car and the point is well made, but also it is still a Ferrari so it’s there to be driven quickly. So if the brake pedal has a bit of travel and the handling doesn’t feel natural you need to know that about this car. Think some of the comments below miss the point
Something almost all the comments missed. This car is also for guys like me. Previous owner of a Lamborghini LP550-2, driven all the latest lambos on the track, some Porsches, taken some racing instruction, been to all the car shows. The Lambo was like dating a super model. Loved it, however, disliked some of the attention. Now, as I turn 60, I want a sporty, powerful, precision machine, Italian design and styling, great performance, Ferrari pedigree. I don't care to be noticed and I'm done with road racing and cop avoidance. I want something to take out on the country roads, something my wife will climb into. Something special, with the wind in my hair and the sun overhead. I'd say the Portofino hits all those requirements on the nose. And no, I'm not the COO, CEO, CFO or CTO. Just a guy who likes exotics with some means.
Brilliant as usual, the best performance car reviewer out there. Makes the car-spotter turned car reviewer You Tubers out there look like the wannabes they are. You can't beat a real motoring journalist.
I personally don't think it looks good. In my opinion most of the newer Ferraris aren't that good looking. In the past 10 years I've only liked the 458, 488 and La Ferrari.
This car isn't meant to be like the 488. The 488 is in a class of its own. This is a proper car to cruise in with the top down with the potential of being a sports car.
Great video as I've come to expect from Steve. They might have change the name from the west coast of the US to Italy, but the styling is definitely west coast inspired. Remove the Ferrari badges and it could easily be mistaken for an American muscle car. ( which would cost half the price! )
dufferego87 GT350 is the exception! Sounds otherworldly and totally different than Ferrari’s because unlike Ferrari’s, it uses unequal length headers, a longer stroke, and an up down up down crank layout.
100% marketed to women who aren't interested in cars. Exhaust sound made to replicate the sound made by her turbo 4 GLA her dad bought her before she married a rich guy, and looks inspired by the familiar Toyota Solara
Long gone are the days when V8 passion was there with Ferrari. That's why the proper Ferrari vehicles belong to their V12 models but those cost twice as much as a Portofino. Unreal amounts of money.
Better than the California, but that was a pretty low bar. Still, a Ferrari is about driving pleasure and an isolated steering and suspension system and a mushy brake peddle are not what I want in any car, let alone in a Ferrari.
I think Portfoino is a Ferrari, but not like a Ferrari. That image is close to British cars, like Jaguar and Astonmartin,Portofino has a high powered engine, but seems not to force a driver to strong tensions.
One day these car channels will figure out that we just want to see the car on the road, we can hear you talk without looking at you driving the majority of the video, smh
I never disliked a video and haven't done today but ,the complains that you have with the car are purposely built in for their potential costumer, the pedal feel, the flat ride ...and I'm sure they will sell lots of them . otherwise a few more shots from the rear and the roof mechanism would be nice, but thanks for the video!
*Personally, there's something off about the way it looks.. It looks as if it was designed by two different teams, which results in a something that looks like a a deformed mashup of a 488 GTB and an 812 Superfast..*
Anwar Ali; You and me both man! I've never felt "wow" like I do with a Lamborghini, Aston Martin, De Tomaso, S Class AMG's and Brabus, or even high end Bentley's..... Ferrari's are not what they once were... take a look at the interior and you'll find cheap material taken straight out of a Smart.... My heart will always go for Lamborghini!
I was thinking like you...hihi. honestly i dont have money for this but i would go for something more epic even if it was older,f12.... I dontknow why but i hate turbos in supercar... Kind spoils the ideia of super car... I love it on evos e wrx and gtrs.... But in cars like this... No thank you
MrStefano218 Lol it has a 4 wheels and headlights, how unoriginal Ferrari, it looks like every car out there. This movie I watched had a beggining, middle and end, very unoriginal.
Except that the GT4C Lusso is very easy to drive. Does Ferrari mean to say that the Portofino is slower than all of their other cars and is therefore superior in some ambiguous way?
I think a more honest description of the car is "this is our cheapest car and it is our least powerful, so it won't scare you as much as our other cars if you're scared of power"
I thought Ferrari made super cars and sports cars. Seems like they are going more and more towards GT cars. They only have 1 “sports/ super car” (the 488 )and 3 GT models. Falling behind everyone else trying to copy Austin Martin of old.
Another whimpering review from a professional reviewer. Come on...you know you wanted to say it but just couldn’t get the words out. The car, although perfect, just has no “ soul”. I think you old folks are just running out of ideas and ways to judge a car. Your ennui is showing, LOL
Man in the video says ~ "I DON'TLIKE the way the car FEELS....I DON'T LIKE the way the car DRIVES....I DON'T LIKE the STEERING....I DON'T LIKE the BRAKES.....BUT....other than that.....it's a great car"......???
MrStefano218 hp is what the engine puts out. Brake hp is how much horsepower is going through the breaks and tyres; i.e. BHP will always be lower than hp due to friction between the engine and axles
Tigerburningbright agree... and in general all luxury or superluxury cars with negative comment about the looks are best seller... so rich people in real life do the opposite of TH-cam comments
I like how the 812 superfast, the 488, and the California t look. However, I think this is ugly. Out of all of the cars I just mentioned, the 812is my favorite because I think it looks the best and has the best engine (6.5 liter naturally aspirated v12 vs 3.9 liter twin turbo v8s for the other cars)
‘“Quick with a capital F” lol

Thank you. I really enjoyed your review. One of the best i have seen. Open, honest and crisp
Beautiful car. But the front looks like it is high on something illegal.
Considering the success and age of the California, I am a little surprised that some of the larger lower priced badges still haven’t tried to make a “beautiful but not terribly impractical” four seat convertible.

Quick with a capital F?
I can get the new corvette ZR1 which is faster and a lot cheaper i think it looks better too
Allen Saunders way to try and compare something that shouldnt be compared.
nurkijao meaning Ferrari
Ford GT
lol
Steve- if you were to get a Ferrari in the next year or two, new or used, which would you get?
Can you give it a doug score?
Raees Saint yes yes yes!
You seem to be testing it as a track car, It’s a Grand Tourer. You said yourself how compliant the suspension is. If Ferrari wanted it as a track car then they would have put track suspension on it.
I like this review. I like how this man lets us get a feel of the car and how it drives. Top notch mate.
Steve thanks for so effectively communicating how the car FEELS to drive, not just the stats and tech like other reviewers.
V P it’s great isn’t it!
Great review as ever, first class feedback from a great race driver. Clearly this car isn’t a track car and the point is well made, but also it is still a Ferrari so it’s there to be driven quickly. Excellent review, great insight and understanding. I feel I understand the Portofino really well and all Ferraris a little better.

can you spare some change? I'll paint you a painting lol
Hi Steve whats the prob with the brakes
An Enjoyable & Informative Review! Classy & Beautifully Done! Bravo! ♥️🌷🕯
Brilliant as usual, the best performance car reviewer out there. Makes the car-spotter turned car reviewer You Tubers out there look like the wannabes they are. You can't beat a real motoring journalist.
Sutcliffs' voice, this man is a true driver.
looks bad around the b or c pillar where the roof meets the trunk. looks especially bad here when the roof is down
I personally don't think it looks good. In my opinion most of the newer Ferraris aren't that good looking. In the past 10 years I've only liked the 458, 488 and La Ferrari.
Bruce Lee looks about as special as a mx5 to me, very disappointing
Totally agree
actually more impressed by the new mx5 than this xd
looks aggressive af
F12 TDF is beautiful
Bruce Lee Agreed. The F12 and LaFerrari are my favorite recent Ferraris.
I know you can do better, I know this car is not helping. But you could at least show the beauty lines of the car in and out. Thank you. As always.
I'll take one of these in black, with blood-red interior. So decadent!
Isn’t the gt4 lusso more usable?
What's a sixpence worth ?
did they just combine f12 and california???
This car isn't meant to be like the 488. The 488 is in a class of its own. This is a proper car to cruise in with the top down with the potential of being a sports car.
The Red one is so f4cking amazing
For those of you complaining, have you seen the California? The Portofino is a gigantic improvement over it
Steve is my favorite journalist
I mean it looks alright but it's really not that different looking to the California when the roofs down
Great video as I've come to expect from Steve. They might have change the name from the west coast of the US to Italy, but the styling is definitely west coast inspired. Remove the Ferrari badges and it could easily be mistaken for an American muscle car. ( which would cost half the price! )
Honest review ... thank you
"Quick...with a capital F". Chris Harris just facepalmed somewhere
I'm going to steal that :)
it sounds like turbocharged 4 cylinder from a hothatch:)
Everything with flatplane crank sounds like 2 L4 in tandem. Turbo it and things are even worse.
penalozaur say what? What about a gt350?
And it looks like miata
dufferego87 GT350 is the exception! Sounds otherworldly and totally different than Ferrari’s because unlike Ferrari’s, it uses unequal length headers, a longer stroke, and an up down up down crank layout.
Yes, I believe him it's quick with a capital F but don't believe it sounds so.
My neighbours just bought one, it sounds very lively to me.
The headlights look like they were designed by some other company.
I’m not getting it until they release the HGTE, Handling Speciale or whatever suspension and power tuning that they offer for the Portofino.
Don't bother, you cannot pay it
paul jansen 😂😂😂 speak for yourself
100% marketed to women who aren't interested in cars. Exhaust sound made to replicate the sound made by her turbo 4 GLA her dad bought her before she married a rich guy, and looks inspired by the familiar Toyota Solara
I like the aspect ratio of this video looks great on new mobiles
V8 getting smaller but even better and more powerful when turbocharged
Drive it on the autobohn, it is a grand tour!
S63 AMG Coupe & Portofino; my two car "dream" garage; guess I'm getting old...
best looking ferrari rear end on the market
Where's the rear end ???
Dropping the California name is smart.. Cali is in a bit of a bad light right now.
That exhaust noise is trash.
Genuinely sounds like a turbo 4
Long gone are the days when V8 passion was there with Ferrari. That's why the proper Ferrari vehicles belong to their V12 models but those cost twice as much as a Portofino. Unreal amounts of money.
Keep in mind your watching over TH-cam not in person
If you could afford it, buy an exhaust. Problem solved...
still better than Mclaren exhaust sound
very imformative video,im a fan of steve sutcliffe.👍
Christopher Pasco I didnt realize Ferrari's website details how the steering is too light and the driving dynamics feel unnatural....
Game changing review. Thank you, Steve.
Thanks Steve.......steered me away from this very skilfully as usual :)
I drove one and I was giggling like a little girl….what an awesome car
steve back to auto express already ?
Doug the type of guy to give Auto Express a DougScore.
This days most of the car reviewers are reviewing themselves not the cars
Better than the California, but that was a pretty low bar. Still, a Ferrari is about driving pleasure and an isolated steering and suspension system and a mushy brake peddle are not what I want in any car, let alone in a Ferrari.
Hears Steve's voice... click like!
Mr Sutcliffe has lost more weight. He is looking very sharp.
Quick with capital F😂😂
I think Portfoino is a Ferrari, but not like a Ferrari. That image is close to British cars, like Jaguar and Astonmartin,Portofino has a high powered engine, but seems not to force a driver to strong tensions.
How could this possibly be more “useable” than a lusso??
Simply Beautiful
One day these car channels will figure out that we just want to see the car on the road, we can hear you talk without looking at you driving the majority of the video, smh

COMRADE DONALD TRUMP looks like a mazda mx5 had babies with and rx8, quite disappointing
Dull reviewer, Fantastic car
Wonderful review of a wonderful car
I just don't find Ferraris all that attractive nowadays :/
Anwar Ali I’m sure they really care what people who can’t afford one thinks
Yeah that’s great putting someone down like that
Anwar Ali; You and me both man!
Anwar Ali I dont agree with you they are really special. But I dont like much this one mainly because it isnt v12 NA engine
Tigerburningbright wait s second, how do you know he can't afford one?!?!?!
I feel like the Cali T just came out.
I absolutely love it!
Turbo,sounds like thrash,nothing like a naturally aspirated v8 screaming at 9k revs
I was thinking like you...hihi. honestly i dont have money for this but i would go for something more epic even if it was older,f12.... I dontknow why but i hate turbos in supercar... Kind spoils the ideia of super car... I love it on evos e wrx and gtrs.... But in cars like this... No thank you
They should use four wheel drive
Looks like a Mazda RX-8.
Agreed
Looks like a Flower to me... wait no, looks like my house, or the church near my house
MrStefano218 Lol it has a 4 wheels and headlights, how unoriginal Ferrari, it looks like every car out there. This movie I watched had a beggining, middle and end, very unoriginal.
You are blind or need a pair of spectacles
No it doesn't.
Always an honour to watch Steve
But portifino
Looks like Jag
Sounds like civic with aftermarket exhaust
488 spider is the one
The new Barbie car, just need to paint it pink
Sounds like a turbo 4 and looks like something Toyota would come out with in 2018 and call the new Solara
How can Ferrari claim this is the most usable car they make when they also make a roomy awd hatchback? Their claim doesn't make any sense
Michael McDonald the gt4c lusso is a monster of a car, not an easy drive. This is the best daily in a drivers perspective
The most usable ferrari is the GTC Lusso
That has no cabrio, so you hear hardly the engine and it costs 50% more, so not that usuable.
expensive miata?
Reminds me of a Granturismo that had plastic surgery.
I dont care what everyone says its gorgeous .... this is a daily used capital F
It's 600 hp, isn't bhp the same?
MrStefano218 hp is what the engine puts out. Brake hp is how much horsepower is going through the breaks and tyres; i.e. BHP will always be lower than hp due to friction between the engine and axles
Kyle McGillivray ok, thank you
How come it looks like Jaguar?
New shirt Steve?
Why are you guys so negative about the way it looks? You can never afford one. Ur opinions mean nothing to ferrari
Tigerburningbright agree... and in general all luxury or superluxury cars with negative comment about the looks are best seller... so rich people in real life do the opposite of TH-cam comments
Think they do. Prior didn't sell well. Maybe U can't but others here can
Tigerburningbright quite hypocritical of you considering yours doesn’t matter either
Sam Sult, problem is, his opinions are of the people who have negative opinions on the car, and not the car itself. so it does matter a bit more
WOW WHY SO HOSTILE?
Was expecting a video for 8 minutes worth of car exterior not majority of it of one view of a bloke in a checky shirt!
Sounds like a Honda Civic with a blowing exhaust!
exhaust sound sucks tho
I like how the 812 superfast, the 488, and the California t look. However, I think this is ugly. Out of all of the cars I just mentioned, the 812is my favorite because I think it looks the best and has the best engine (6.5 liter naturally aspirated v12 vs 3.9 liter twin turbo v8s for the other cars)
The MeenoBuffallo the 812 honestly looks like trash
You are silly, the portofino and the 812 are designed by the same people at Ferrari
Kinda looks like an ftype from the front
Front end looks kinda like a Trans AM now. Whaddaya know...
Looks like Chevy corvette, is’t it?
Gio I thought the same lol but this a little nicer “corvette”
No
Daniel A. Camacho Corral nicer and 2,5 times expensive Lol
Gio yeah lol
...
Kinda..
