  • This is the third video I’ve published discussing the new Benchmade Water Class knives. Take a look inside the knife to see how the subcomponents fared after 24 hours in 1% salt fog. Are we getting our money’s worth of performance?

      Would you be open to a longer testing period? Say a week or a month? I understand if it's not practical because it might actually destroy some of the testing knives. But it would be interesting to see the knives that are promoted as a "water knife" results if they were accidentally left on a boat for a while in a real world scenario. Your corrosion environment seems to simulate that pretty well.

      This content is golden. As far as the upcoming fixed blade tests, it'd be interesting to see how they fare both inside their sheaths and exposed. I suspect the sheaths will represent the dark horse of these exams.

      1. Sheaths and all, as knives mostly live in sheaths
      2. After a 48 hour test period, please inspect then put the knives back in the sheaths for a week to simulate what probably happens when someone forgets to pull their knife out of the sheath and check.

    Spyderco delayed the release of magna-cut because they noticed galvanic corrosion due to the internals, they proceeded to take the extra time (putting them nearly last on market for magna-cut offerings) to find the right materials for the internals that wouldn’t corrode or induce corrosion.
    Spyderco puts a lot of thought into their salt line, and their customers are highly critical any corrosion. I doubt benchmade put that much thought into it when trying to muscle in on the same market.

    Bees wax is an amazing rust inhibitor. It's all I use on my knives here in Florida close to the ocean. Even carrying steels like maxamet, once a week wipe down with bees wax and absolutely zero issues. Used it for many many years with flawless results.

    The challenge with a folding knife is not only does the blade need corrosion resistance, but so does every other component. as illustrated in the video springs and bearings are a problem. Something like a titanium frame lock with Teflon washers would probably get it done, although that wouldn’t be the smoothest operating knife ever.

    • @CuttingBoardRx

    Great video. Liners are corrosion magnets because they trap moisture between themselves and the scales. I was glad to see the Adira's liners looked pristine. I've had light corrosion on liners just after a summer of carry. Spyderco is the king of saltwater folders, but the Adira performed well. Adira owners should put a drop of oil on the spring and lockbar juncture.

    Great job. I would still like to know how the exposure to the salt water test affect the edge on those knive🙂 and on the next test I say keep it real world scenario and place the knive in the sheaths and out. • @nandayane

      Spyderco took so long to bring CPM magna cut to market because they needed to find new materials for the internals that wouldn’t rust because of galvanic corrosion. I have no doubt that every detail was looked after.

      Sorry to be frank about this, but I’m not a huge fan of Para series because it is in essence a liner lock system and these are prone to failure. Manix 2 is what I would consider to be the best of all worlds.

    • @dayannahkali
      @dayannahkali 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@CuttingBoardRx Para's are not my favorite too but in any case, compression locks are extremely tough and durable, way more than liner lock. Manix 2 is an awsome tool. I like backlocks too, and choils, the native and the strech are cool.

    • @dayannahkali
      @dayannahkali 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@CuttingBoardRx Me neither, such a thick bevel with such a fine tip idk, but the compression lock is really sturdy and does not have the same weakness as linerlocks. I don’t like much the plastic «crossbar» on the manix. I quite like backlocks because it is ergonomic like a full tang knife.

    Excellent video! I've recently purchased a Spyderco PM2 Salt in Magnacut with their all black DLC coating. Based on your tests thus far, what is your opinion on how it might fair against sweat and non-salt water? I live in Tennessee and wanted a "water proof" knife more so than a "salt water proof" knife. I assume the DLC coating might aid in the prevention of galvanic corrosion, but I feel like I've also heard that blade coatings can actually INCREASE the chances of rust(was surprised when you mentioned that anodization can actually cause some issues too). Curious to know what someone more versed in the topic thinks.

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      To me, as a former industrial engineer, it would make a lot of sense to laser-cut the blades and the lockbars out of the same plate of steel because that’s where most “in between” metal is wasted and also assures matching thickness and chemical compatibility. Just saying…

      I think the logo belongs on the handle. If they stamped it, which has to happen before heat treat, there’s a chance that the blade would warp in that area when in the furnace.
