    Smooth set up. After watching different videos on TH-cam about studio set ups; makes me realize that there's not right or wrong way to have a TH-cam studio set up.

      I agree with this 100%. I’ve even changed my setup since this video, which lends to your point that perfect is subjective. Thanks for watching

    And here I was looking to buy another desk mounted poles/arms for my beginner setup when all I needed to do was use some of the extra arms my monitor desk mount has. I didn't know you can screw directly onto it. Your video had the tidbits of information I needed at my beginner setup. Thank you so much.

    I wasn't expecting that large of a difference in the microphone placement especially with the efforts you went through with minimizing vocal bounce off the walls! Night and day difference

      Yeah dude its crazy. people spend hundreds on expensive mics and then place them on the other side of the world. I'm trying to fix that one vid at a time lmao

      @@Joey.Alford I've been agonizing over what mic should I get for my desk setup but turns out I may not have to! I already have a couple of the Rode mics, so I will try those out with your suggestion which should be good for now.

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danasuechilds these mics are definitely a good value. Of course a more expensive mic will yield better quality but the way you use the mic will have a massive impact too!

    Subscribed ! I'm looking to make a spare guestroom into a low profile Podcast and TH-cam production room, and your video is perfect ! Very clean and minimal. Hey Joey, nice job showing the iPhone, $60 phone, cheap softbox, and mic at the end for comparison. You help give hope to other people with very little budget! I started there and finally worked up to a 1DX, 3 LEDs, 2 Mics, Arms, C Stands, etc. but that small kit anyone can use to start (phone, small led, mini mic).

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Sean! Yeah I think when you watch these types of videos everyone likes to flaunt their gear, so showing newcomers that you don’t NEED all of it is important to me! That’s a solid setup you’ve got now though, awesome!

  • @patbollin
    @patbollin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for sharing this. Don't bash yourself for all the obsession over different lighting setups and such. That testing and tinkering is your learning process, and it will pay off in the long run if you keep doing this stuff. 2 things, if you are open to feedback. 1) Your practical lights are flickering in a really distracting way. You can buy a few of those new Aputure B7Cs. I have one and love it. Or you could tinker with your shutter speed. There are tons of videos about eliminating flicker here on TH-cam. 2) If you have the space you might want to move your softbox slightly to your left. The light is nice and soft, yes, but its also super flat being almost directly in front of you. I hope this helps in some small way.

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Pat thanks for the awesome feedback. I have another video about my desk setup where I actually asked for help to fix the flickering so that’s been fixed going forward. But yes I agree I hate it too, I appreciate the input!
      2nd the soft box is unfortunately as far to the left as possible given the lack of space between my desk and wall for the light stand 👎🏼 I know typically 45° from the subject is what you’re looking for, unfortunately with the space the way I have it setup now, that isn’t possible.
      But seriously thanks for this awesome comment! It really means a lot to me when nice folks like you take the time to try and be encouraging and helpful! Take care and enjoy your Friday !

    Looks great! A lot o inspiration behind this! Only one thing I noticed and I scrolled the comments quickly to make sure it wasn't already mentioned. You have some slight banding going on in your footage, I noticed it mainly in the highlights (against your desk). This may be due to the Shutter speed/angle used for your video and the frequency of your lights. Typically a 180 degree shutter (2x shutter speed) is recommended, but sometimes it picks up unwanted waves which Is what I think you're getting. Just some food for thought. Keep up the great work!

    EXCELLENT video! I like that you gave the perspectives with the mic in different locations and compared budget vs not-so-budget items. And really great idea with the phone as overhead camera. The NEEWER monitor...how does it compare (spec-wise) the popular SmallHD that everyone else has in their expensive setups?

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice comment! As for the monitor, spec wise I couldn’t tell you off hand but for my needs it’s great. I think the smallhd gets way brighter and is higher resolution so for a professional setting it’s probably the way to go. I just need to make sure my camera didn’t miss focus or run out of memory card space lol so because of this it’s perfect!

    You put acoustic panels everywhere but where you should have, directly in front of you, behind the mic to stop sound reflection off of that wall. That is going to resonate the most. Put some foam there and give it a test. Honestly for a mic with short range, there is often little to no need for acoustic panels anywhere but directly in front of you when speaking.

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is new info to me! To be honest the panels are more for general echo around the room vs sound quality with the shotgun mics. Even just taking a phone call in the office echoed the whole apartment before the panels.

    • @ScaledCreations
      @ScaledCreations 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Joey.Alford If you stop the initial sound bounce from behind the panel, there is little to no need for the rest. If you are silencing other sound in the room, the other walls definitely make sense. A lot of folks do podcasts and go overboard with it. The mic itself makes a huge difference too. I use a Shure SM7B as well as a Rode Podmic and both have such a short pick up range, little sound dampening in the room is required. My Rode board removes the remaining background noise.

  • @TheBrandonLeeCook

    wild how a slight move of the mic makes that huge of a difference!! How would you compare the godox light vs the led panel light?

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Big difference eh? So I really like the godox specifically because of the soft box and overall brighter output. That said the led panel can be battery powered so I usually use it if I need to be mobile. Different tools for different jobs y’a know

      Yeah dude super expensive. I think the people at the level where they can make a video on an expensive light like that and make the money back in Adsense immediately are smart. Unfortunately that’s not where I’m at so the godox is good enough for me. Also I don’t even know if I would notice a difference tbh hahaha

    I'm struggling so much to set up the best studio. I only have a relevant video on my channel, and I want to make a new one, with better audio, and easier to watch. DIY softbox, using the same APUTURE that you got, and I need to see, which lens is better for this space with Canon M50, between: Canon 20mm 2.8 and Canon 18-135 3.5, which is not super sharp, but, it's wide enough for my needs.

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’ll get there! Canon 18-135 will be way more versatile in general. If you want wide the 10-18 will make any space look huge and it’s pretty cheap!

    Great setup! One question: What is the secondary arm you put on the monitor pole? I'm woefully ignorant when it comes to tech. This setup is the best I've found so far...but I can't seem to find that secondary arm (it's probably looking me dead in the face and I just don't know it). Thanks!

    • @Joey.Alford
      @Joey.Alford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The arm I have came off of a laptop/monitor stand combo. It used to support a tray that could hold a MacBook.
      amzn.to/3a9lkkf
      But that one is expensive since you don’t need the tray part of it. Instead, linked in the description you’ll see “computer monitor arm” and that’s the one I would recommend for this setup!
