Have We Had Enough John Wick Rip Offs Yet?

- When Keanu Reeves first hit screens as John Wick in 2014, audiences were enthralled with the unique style and kinetic fight sequences. Basically inventing a new style of movie combat, John Wick was something completely different than other action movies at the time. Which is why it was no surprise when a slew of John Wick Rip Off movies came tumbling out of Hollywood. Nobody, Violent Night, The Beekeeper, Monkey Man, the list goes on. Which begs the question, have we had enough John Wick rip off movies?
#johnwick #keanureeves #actionmovies #nerdstalgic
"..a NEW style called...Gun Fu."?? John Woo would like a word.
Gun Kata. Equilibrium 2002
I wasn't the only one cause the genre goes way back even before John Wick.
That’s what happens when humans let a.i. do ALL the work!
4:13 Roadhouse is NOT a revenge movie
@@cschwacoferthank you I was going to mention that
I don’t care what anyone says. I just love that Bob Odenkirk starred in an action film… and a good one!! Legend. Who would have thought?
fr nobody was so good
Seriously, Monkey Man, Sizu, Atomic Blonde, Nobody, Extraction, and my personal favorite Bullet Train are all absolutely great movies that deserve to be watched.
Sizu and Nobody were awesome
Yessssss Waiting on Ex-Tract-3
Admittedly beekeeper isn’t a John wick clone it’s a standard Jason stratham movie
Homefont
Transporter
Crank
Safe
Parker
They’re the same movie
yea, I saw beekeeper on a flight its not full of gun fu. Jason had been making those films for years I miss those B action movies that he was in because i feel like we don’t get a ton of them anymore.
Bro how you edit your comment and leave his last name spelled wrong 😭 are you trying to gaslight us into believing his name is _actually_ Jason *Stratham* 💀
@@478Johnnyboy Yeah but I wish Statham did more action-comedy roles like Spy. The man is great at that kind of comedy and I don't think even he realizes it.
@@benwasserman8223 I think he's well aware he can do comedy - watch him in the early Guy Ritchie movies and The Expendables franchise.
You can't beat a bit of Stathporn 🙂. The Beekeeper was particularly perfect in its choice of bad guys because literally nothing he could do to internet scammers could have been harsh enough to give them a shred of sympathy from me 🙂.
John Wick became a genre of its own
And these movies are just following this genre
Thats a solid way to put it.
Genre is: a action film when’re you can see the fighting.
Not really at all, The Killer (1989) w/ Chow-Yun Fat.
@@Nerdstalgic Not at all. Chow-Yun Fat. The Killer 1989)
@@thatsblnkfce Even before that: The Killer (1989) Chow-Yun Fat.
nobody isnt a john wick rip off, its more like a mix of it and the equalizer
Yeah, and The Equalizer 1 is a better movie than John Wick.
Nobody was also written by the guy who wrote John Wick
@_davidboxing funny u mention it bc they both released a month apart. Equalizer came first
Nobody was produced by David Leitch and it felt like a John Wick clone.
I LOVED Nobody. Saw it in the theater 3 times. I hate it never fully explained his relationship with his wife.
He killed three men, WITH A PENCIL✏️
who does that?!
BABA YAGA
With a fuc%ing pencil!
He is a man of sheer f%#$ing will.
@@darkmyro **A man with fackin FOCUS!!!!.... FOCUS!**
I would contend that Violent Night is "Santa Claus does a Die Hard" not a John Wick.
Absolutely!
It's more of a comedy action movie then something serious. That's the main difference and what bothers me about this video. The dude talks like he didn't see the movie
The John Wick ripoff is for today's movie culture what "Die Hard on a..." was for the 90s. It's obvious, but when it works, it's a very entertaining film, if not always a masterpiece. Besides, it's more comprehensible than all the Taken clones of the 2010s, which we all thought John Wick would be at first.
No. Keep em coming. I love em. Korean revenge flicks are bad ass
IM NOT WATCHING OLD BOY AGAIN!
@@Cassner oh my god, I watched that movie for the first time last month after somehow not having it spoiled for me for years. Holy shit I want not expecting that ending. What a ride
You gotta love their style of films.
*What makes korean revenge flicks so good is that they have a strong story and emotional impact*
John Wick was heavily influenced by tons of other films though - Collateral, Hard Boiled, The Replacement Killers, Seven Samurai and Park Chan-wook's Vengeance films.
absolutely
The Replacement Killers was an awesome movie.
@@MMLynnmarie Indeed, a great forray into Hollywood for Chow Yun Fat and one of Antoine Fuqua's best.
Thanks for the recommendations and I look forward to seeing them. 😁
No. The movie is not necessarily influenced by any of those movies. The director might not even have seen these movies.
Just because a movie has similarities with other movies, doesn’t mean they are influenced or inspired by them. It could be, but it also could not be. We don’t know 🤷
I still had some suspension of disbelief in the first 2 movies. But they straight up turned John into a super hero who takes minimal damage
reminds me of Max Payne, who could be carrying twenty bullets in his chest, but the drugs keep him alive.
Tbh the whole world building of the franchise is really messy and makes little sense
I think the bullet proof suits kinda ruined the movies a bit and made the action a little goofy at times. John wick 3 is still my favorite tho.
@@mohammadalkhani6714 I agree, I felt the same when John started using the suit to shield against close-range gunshots. It did take away some of the thrill of the Gun-Fu , though the other fight scenes were still really great.
I didn't get the appeal of John Wick when the first one came out, but I eventually got on board when the movies started incorporating more martial arts in the action. I am looking forward to Ballerina, and as far as John Wick clones, Nobody is my favorite. Love watching Saul kick some ass, and I'm looking forward to that sequel also
LOVED Nobody. Just because it's a clone doesn't mean it's bad. Seeing Saul be a bad ass will never get old.
It's tied with SISU for me. I always loved Rare Exports and seeing these guys come together again for SISU made the movie even better - which wasn't needed since it rocks so hard.
From what I hear of the current screenings of Ballerina, the studio is in panic mode. idk what went wrong, but there were a flurry of articles recently that said that it wasn't testing well at all.
There are no John wick rip offs, they’re just action movies.
Tbh it’s been like this since Taken. The retired OG seeks revenge n goes on one last mission lol.
They aren’t talking about just the story. Yes, the original John wick was utilizing the simple revenge genre. What made it special was the choreography, fluidity, and cinematography of the action. Which all of these films coming after have attempted to recreate. Hell, John Wick (2014) is the film that practically saved action films. As before hand, majority of them were horrible like the Taken films. Fast paced editing, horrible cinematography, and fights you can’t even begin to comprehend. John Wick showed that if you took the time and filmed action right. It can become its own art.
That premise has been around WAY longer than that; since at least the 80s.
Say what you will about the others, but Nobody is straight up a great movie. Honestly one of my favorites.
I agree! I adore Odenkirk.
Man, nobody is great. Literally
HEY NOW, don't you dare shit on Violent Night
It was bad, not lying
it was boring and the motivations of the villain was really forcibly childish
Watched it on a plane….it sucked
@@Hallo42059 it was a Christmas story guised as an action thriller, what did you expect ?
@@MrBoooneI found the movie entertaining, love the action and comedy, can't wait for the sequel. The movie is definitely better than whatever red one movie is coming out and it has a 250m budget and they want to make a franchise out of it.
The beekeeper is Jason being Jason that’s HIS genre
Violent Night and Atomic Blonde were both super fun. Definitely worth the watch.
You keep Violent Night outta this!!!! 😂
I liked Violent Night!! But still a clone haha
@@Nerdstalgic it's not though. It's a clone of die hard. After John wick 4, all these copy films you listed feel so much better and more enjoyable
John Wick didn't exactly reinvent the wheel. It's a pretty standard revenge thriller
In the end, if it's a good movie, who gives a fuck someone else wore it before? All that matters is somebody is wearing it well.
Absolutely!
1:28 gun fu isn’t new,it goes back to John woo movies.
It’s isn’t new, but John Wick elevated it and brought it back to Hollywood and western media. Thank god it did, because action films started to get very lazy with action. John Wick showed that you don’t need a deep story, that action can be the art form people are coming to an action movie for.
@@JoeGrizz1yJohn Wick didn't show us anything lol we already knew that
@@frantictoast3741 John Wick became a success due to its choreography and cinematography in its action. Films like The Bourne Identity and Taken showcase how awful action was becoming in the genre. Extremely lazy and fast edited to hide all the nonsense. Hollywood was forgetting what action should be in a film. Fluid and understandable. Audiences were getting tired of the bland action throughout the later 2000s and early 2010s. When John Wick hit theaters, it took everyone by surprise with its approach to filming fight choreography. Not to mention allowing its lead star to actually train and do most of the stunts himself. With the action being an art form and being a true spectacle. Ever since then, the action genre has seen a revival. With films truly starting to push the boundaries of stunts and choreography. Why do you think there is a discussion about “John wick knockoffs”. We wouldn’t be having this discussion, if it wasn’t for the franchises unique abilities and influence on western action films of the later 2010s and 2020s
Don’t John Wick, Violent Night, The Beekeeper and Nobody all have overlapping staff and teams. Makes sense they all feel so “familiar”
John Wick ripped off The Man From Nowhere.
I like JW though, it knows what it is.
It shouldn’t be "ripping off John Wick" to have good action.
You didn't understand the video, did you?
Gun Fu isn't new, Chow Yun-Fat has starred in multiple movies using that style starting from the late 80s 😂
Stop acting like John Wick was an original premise. The genre and plot has been done over and over.
It's not about the premise, but about the action without shaky cam shit, that many movies followed after John Wick's success.
Nobody isn't really a ripoff since its also produced by David Leitch.
I am amazed that with all these rip-offs we have yet to receive a Michelle Yeoh one where she fights people for 2 hours. I'd watch that!
YES! For reals!
He'll yes! Or Lucy lui!
The concept of a retired protagonist w/ a particular set of skills seeking bloody justice was reinvigorated by Taken, and John Wick incorporated a lot of worldbuilding into it. Unfortunately, the action genre has been using this concept as a crutch. Back in the 90s, there were a lot of Die Hard clones: The Rock, Con Air, Air Force One, Cliffhanger, Broken Arrow, Speed 1&2, Under Siege 1&2, Die Hard 2&3, etc... But that didn't stop film studios from heavily investing in more inventive concepts beyond that trend: Terminator 2, Face/Off, The Matrix, Total Recall, Demolition Man, Crimson Tide, Starship Troopers, The Fifth Element, True Lies, Eraser, Enemy of the State, The Mask of Zorro, The Fugitive, etc... While the martial arts aspect was supplied by the likes of Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Michelle Yeoh, etc...
No, we haven't had enough! Keep them coming!
How about this? Let's abolish comic book based superhero films first, before we start talking about how played out any other trend may or may not be. Until then, give me more Beekeeper, more Nobody, more Violent Night, and more The Killer's Game, which I'm really looking forward to.
"Hey look! It's an ordinary soft spoken NPC! Hope nothing crazy happens and he turns into a lone mercenary....."
We have also had enough John Wicks.
There's probably 1 more for hollywood to milk out for a quick buck, but they'll see the decline in profits and end it then. Probably be the lowest rated one too that's Keanu being great but a half-done plot with no real good support and a bizarre celeb cameo.
John Wick 4 was an excellent film but it is time to say, “we had a great run here and let’s not blow it”. I don’t want to see it turned into Jaws or Indiana Jones.
Exactly 💯
Yup. 2 too many
@@waverlyking6045 Nah, it was done after John Wick 2. All the movies blend together now because there's no uniqueness or anything really new.
Well just about all of those movies, minus Sisu, were either directed by or stunt/fight coordinated by members of the 8711 stunt team, which was started by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, who had directed John Wick. So the similarities would make a lot of sense.
“Nobody” is pretty popular
Tired of well directed action films that have solid stories, good actors and use a friggin tripod during action sequences so we can smoothly see what’s going on in frame? No. No I’m not.
For a second I thought you would put Bullet Train in the same bag of John Wick rip-offs, I'm glad you didn't because I love that god darn movie.
1 guy going in and kicking ass isn't a John wick thing...
This ignores the influence of Kill Bill and its resurgence of films that inspired it.
Violent Night. Thought I wouldn't can it a revenge movie. It's actually a redemption story. And as much a comedy, I think, as an action movie. Calling it a John Wick clone doesn't do it justice.
So we have come to a point where all action movies are considered John wick ripped offs??
To me Violent Night is "What if John McClane was santa".
John Wick itself is a ripoff
Bingo…..
From what?
This guy's whole channel is a rip off. Everything is.
@@07Flash11MRC I don’t like using the word “ripoff” to describe John Wick but it does borrow a lot from John Woo and Jung-Byung Gil.
Violent Night could have spawned the next Avengers if it was more successful financially 👄
We need an intentionally bad John Wick movie, then the trend should end.
Man From Nowhere comes to mind.
Like a piece of performance art?
@@TXAslingrnever heard of that movie lol
Someone should call Lana Wachewsky to direct John Whick 😂
@@Nerdstalgic Like the evil bong movies, but just one. Mock the concept of the badass character and give him a silly motive with incredibly low budgeting and a plot with countless flaws. Action sequences should be like bloopers in professional wrestling.
This feels like a nitpicking on a Genre that’s next to nonexistent…
Gun-fu. Wasn’t that used in Equilibrium? Pretty sure that was released before John Wick.
‘Sisu’ owes more to the 70s grindhouse and spaghetti westerns than ‘John Wick’.
Also ‘Violent Night’ is just Santa Claus in a ‘Die Hard’ movie.
Be original in your opinions please…
I'd say Violent Night is more Die Hard with some Home Alone thrown in than John Wick personally mate
Very impressive hard core action movie!✨ [ Leon ] - The professional came out way before!✨ The newest hard core action movies had ever arrived!✨👏
What also separates the John Wick franchise from the clones that would follow is that the franchise took great efforts to build its own world. The High Table, the chain of Continental Hotels, the gold coins, the rules everyone adheres to (except those on top, hence the driving force of the sequel films that followed). There's an interconnected network within John Wick's criminal underworld that makes it far more elaborate than a simple revenge tale. There are various players in these movies that fill out the universe, and the reverence these characters have for John Wick is partly what establishes him as a legend at the outset, so that when he backs up his legendary status with action, it feels deserved and warranted to hear him be called the "Baba Yaga". John Wick isn't just simply beating up a bunch of thugs; he's going up against those who would try to become his rivals while also fighting against the forces of those higher up on the food chain, and he's not alone in his endeavor.
A lot of these John Wick clones fail to do this level of world building, or in surrounding the action hero with characters who matter to the universe. They instead simply focus on the one-man-army trope of the action hero.
True. They went hard with lore, you could easily imagine some kind of RPG in this world. Every one of those movies has a simple plot but world building is the biggest difference.
In what world is a movie about a Santa that kills terrorist a John wick ripoff
Like the touch of Taken-alike movies all featuring Liam Neeson, he is not Qui(te) Gon(e) yet
The thing that made John Wick and the following movies so good was the worldbuilding and the lore; almost all of the ripoffs do not bother at all with worldbuilding, and that's why they don't work. Although I did enjoy Atomic Blonde and Nobody.
The others not doing the world building is what makes them so much fun. The first John wick was great, now he's not the bogeyman and it's just getting silly
I'll take a ripoff as long as we can avoid another era of shakey cam, quick edits and poor choreography.
Violent Night and Nobody were great fun
I actually loved the Nobody film but not as much as I Love the John Wick 1-4 movies!
I haven't. It brings me back to the days of the Die Hard rip offs (e.g., Under Siege and Under Siege 2).
Air Force One comes to mind for me
Sudden Death
It's funny because imo both Violent Night and Nobody are far better than any of the John Wick movies
Edit
Bullet Train too
I don’t understand why there are multiple movies with Santa doing John Wick stuff
Talk about KILL. That movie makes John wick look like tekken (the sequels)
Thank God action films nowadays are ripping off John Wick. I was sick of YEARS of shaky cam films after those goddamned Jason Bourne and Taken movies.
Some action movies getting compared to John Wick aren't that similar to John Wick, they're just very well filmed and clear with a badass lead character.
I'm surprised they haven't tried to remake Equilibrium as a John Wick clone.
That would be cool tbh.
Isn’t John Wick itself a ripoff?
I mean, it plays with tropes, for sure. Rip off? I don't know about that.
@@Nerdstalgic I feel the same can be said about the movies included in this topic, especially Nobody. But I suppose I can see the other side depending on the movie. They’re all using existing tropes and some are using them better than others.
A ripoff of what?
@@Nerdstalgicoff course it’s a rip off! It’s a retired hit man going ballistic because someone killed his dog ffs! I mean don’t get me wrong I love me some Keanu, but Taken had this number looooong before John Wick arrived. Sure it added some depth and world building , but at heart it was a simple story of a man with a particular set of skills who you don’t want to mess with getting messed with and then kicking arse. Nothing new there. A script writer once told me “there is nothing new under the sun, it’s how you distinguish it from the stuff that came before that makes it good.” JW did that with the world building, but none of it is new.
Most of those movies are not really ripoffs but created by the same exact people who created John Wick.
Ripoff is the wrong term to use. John Wick set a tone for other movies to follow. The same directors and writers then made several other movies like Atomic Blonde and Nobody and the John Wick sequels. Then others followed suit because... Audiences loved them and they made money.
I'm not tired of well shot action movies, even if the plot is a bit thin. I AM tired of poorly shot action with forced plot that doesn't hold up.
Pretty sure you mean Taken rip-offs.
Action movies starring middle-aged actors as retired badasses taking on the world alone? Yeah, that's Taken.
John Wick was just a "Taken" rip off anyway. The real question is: Have we had enough of THOSE?
The lore of this comic universe is much more detailed than the same narrative we get from these other movies.
John wick lowkey is a taken rip off. The taken series came first. Liam neeson is the og of this old man revenge movie stuff
"Nobody" AKA. Saul Goodman goes Postal - is actual GOAT.
Nobody was sick. I’ll take these fun action movies over most of the crap that’s been coming out. Eventually it will get old, but it hasn’t for me yet. It scratches a similar itch as the movies I love from the 80’s and 90’s
I'm not someone who likes to rewatch movies often, but I am always down to rewatch the first John wick. The sequels are good too but the first one is magical.
My favourite John Wick clone is Pig. I have never seen a film so incredible like that, and it stars Nicolas Cage.
We have TOO much Wick. I think variety is fine.
Violent Night is more Die Hard
I've noticed no one in the comments mentioned The Raid movies. Hell, some of the cast from that movie were in John Wick!
Acting like violent night isn’t one of the best modern Christmas movies
You have a short memory if you think John Wick invented all this.
Tbh I liked nobody more than John wick
I think calling some of these films JW "rip offs" is a little reductive. But I'll certainly take the standard JW set over what was the norm *before* 2014. The fact that more action films that came after felt the push to step it up and tighten up their choreography & camera work is great. Getting out of that shaky cam Bourne era (that was only really done well by Bourne, tbh) was a breath of fresh air.
I'm interested in seeing more movies inspired by Wick. Monkey Man and Atomic Blonde are my favs so far (I still need to watch Nobody). The key, like with any good bit of inspiration, is to have someone with a vision step in and sample these films. The same way Chad Stahelski sampled many different eras & styles of cinema to achieve what he did with JW.
Bro, Beekeeper Was Solid Ngl
So glad someone is going over this. I been wanting to hear more about this.
I greatly enjoyed Violent Night. David Harbour is amazing. I want more about mythical holiday characters.
John Wick is like the Dark Souls/Bloodborne of movies. It spawned its own subgenre
I've had enough of John Wick sequels!
I mean Keanu Reeves will forever be amongst the GOAT of action star as John Wick....but JW2 feels like a commercial for Taran Tactical and 3-gun shooting, JW3 is just bloated, and JW4? Gawd John Wick looks like he needed a walking frame on the account of how difficult it was for him to just walk, so all his opponents are set to Novice difficulty. It's a sad direction for the franchise to go, given how amazing the OG John Wick was.
John wick 4 feels like someone who wanted to copy john wick but failed
Mr Nobody is pretty awesome.
Gunpowder milkshake is a great title.
I've always called is the "Angry Guy With A Pistol" genre.
ok nerdstalgic. one of these movies u said is a ripoff of john wick is not. violent night. it is a mix of die hard and home alone. not a john wick ripoff.
the question that might have to be asked is where the hell is Jason Statham in the John Wick universe
I just think of it as different Organizations from around the world with similar yet different goals. Like a Kingsman/Statesman thing.
Come on! How was Violent Night a John Wick rip-off? I love John Wick and am a massive fan, and have watched Violent Night several times. Besides gratuitous violence these films have nothing in common. I’d say Violent Night is more a Die Hard kind of film, while John Wick is a bit of a Taken rip-off if you really want to split hairs. One is a good-guy-with-special-skills-in-the-“right”-place type of film, and the other is a “What I do have is a particular set of skills…” old-fashioned kick-@$$ revenge movie.
Exactly!
The thing about these is that a surgically well executed fight sequence will always be cool and impressive. That's whether you bring your respect for niche cinema to it or not.
Not the style of the way the movie is filmed but the revenge also thriller aspect of suspense drama four years before John Wick, there's a movie that fits well stars Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Oliver Jackson-Cohen in particular plays that John Wick type assassin and can fit perfectly into the John Wick franchise.
Keanu is 60 now !!! unbelievable
John Wick himself is a rip off??? You can literally smell the James Bond/Jason Bourne all over it
