  • After three years of being paired, maned wolves Echo and Zayda produce two new pups at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Breeding this threatened species in captivity has always been difficult, but groundbreaking new research into canid in-vitro fertilization at the Cornell-Smithsonian Joint Graduate Training Program could change that.

      They actually eat more fruit and vegetable matter than meat. There is even a fruit named after them …the Wolf Fruit…because they eat it so often,

      Highly unpopular opinion on calling them “omnivores” , it eats 99% meat. I understand it might have a couple other sources of nutrition but it’s not considered a food source. They use fruits and plants medicinally.

      In order for them to survive they HAVE to hunt and eat prey , they cannot live off of only plant matter. But they CAN only live off of meat. So you cannot call it an omnivore 😘

    I think a lot of people in the comments misunderstood what she was trying to say. She wasn't calling it an actual type of wolf, she was just saying that it's a species that not a lot of average people know much about. That's what she meant by saying that when you say the word "wolf" a maned wolf isn't the first thing that comes to mind. And to the people getting snippy because she called it a wolf, what else do you expect her to call it? The species is called a maned WOLF whether it's a wolf or a fox or a fucking alien, she can't change it. It's the National Zoo, do you really think they don't know what the animal is actually classified as?

    Why are carnivores hard to breed?

    • @catdotcom
      @catdotcom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Maned Wolves don't even are carnivores. They are omnivores,but they are very timid and anti-social with other wolves,so they get hard to breed.

    But Maned Wolves aren't wolves... (Or Foxes, for that matter). It really bothers me that she keeps calling it and comparing it to other wolves. It's its own thing, I wish she had pointed this out as it really highlights even more on why they need to be protected.

      I'm all for hunting if you need to eat (after all, tigers, lions, wolves, etc. all do that too), but it's evil to do it for a trophy! And I agree, she didn't make that pup, God did and she just facilitated the process.
