  • Patek Philippe means watchmaking at its best. Let’s take a look at the history of the brand and the most iconic watch models.
Many watch collectors spend decades studying Patek Philippe, but we’ll keep it brief for today. Patek Philippe was founded in Geneva in 1839 and quickly became a leader for its innovations in the field of complication watches like chronographs, perpetual calendars, and minute repeaters. Patek even made a custom pocket watch with 24 complications in a single timepiece called the Henry Graves Supercomplication.

I have two 5119s, one in rose gold and the other in white gold. These are among the least expensive Pateks but I bought them for their simplicity and elegance (and relatively small small size) rather than price. I don't consider myself wealthy and having spent almost $50,000 on two watches, I'm not inclined to buy anymore. I have a "been there, done that'" feeling but no regrets. I love the watches I own and in another life (with much more money), I would enjoy collecting from the Patek complications line - stunningly beautiful.

Lady watch enthusiast for 50 years... Just my take, being an engineer and a person who works with their hands, I truly appreciate fine craftsmanship. At the same time, I have never understood
the popularity of Patek. Geneva is my second home town As such, I know a great deal about the watch industry, it's firms, philosophy and the people who make these fine masterpieces.
The only two Patek models I would ever consider are the traditional Calatrava, yellow gold, white face with black roman numerals, with or without the second register, or the Golden Ellipse.
Complications I could care less... They are nice for the sake of being appreciated,, but for practical, daily use, no. I prefer simplicity and ultrathin movements. With that in mind, Piaget has
simply no equal. Unlike Patek, from its very beginning, Piaget was a movement house founded by a watchmaker that slowly evolved into a family business beginning in 1874. Published reports
indicate in the early years, Patek outsourced many movements and simply provided cases and final finishing. Historically, Piaget has been a family of watchmakers, versus Patek a family of
merchants and wise businessmen. That's okay too, I would regard VC and Piaget in the top tier and I would Patek, but Patek specializes in complications, while Piaget specializes in
the creation of ultrathins. At 2MM total case thickness, featuring the world's thinnest watch, the Ultimate Concept, Piaget's preeminence in this area is simply unsurpassed and will be so
for what I expect will be the immediate future. The bottom line, choose a fine watch carefully for it is one of the few possessions any many or woman can own that can last throughout
their lifetime, and beyond. Houses, cars, businesses, fortunes, clothes, and even spouses come and go over time, a fine watch remains.

I’ve purchased about 20-25 Patek models so far. As a brand I’d say they’re fairly uninspiring with a very vintage aesthetic. They seem to be really popular among watch enthusiasts on the internet who are constantly complaining about how difficult the basic steel Nautilus is to purchase, but of the 4-5 friends I have with watch collections in the triple digits, they’re actually a brand that we discuss very little nowadays.

The founder of the Patek Philippe company was Antoni Patek (Antoine Norbert de Patek), a Polish watchmaker. He was born on June 14, 1812, in Piaski Luterskie (modern-day Poland). After serving in the November Uprising in 1830, Patek had to leave Poland and settled in Switzerland.
In 1839, together with another Polish emigrant, Franciszek Czapek, he founded the company Patek, Czapek & Cie, which specialized in producing high-quality watches. In 1845, the partnership was dissolved, and Antoni Patek sought a new partner.
In 1845, Antoni Patek met the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, the inventor of the keyless winding mechanism, which significantly simplified the operation of watches. In 1851, they officially founded the company named Patek Philippe & Co. The company quickly gained a reputation as one of the most important manufacturers of luxury watches in the world.
To this day, Patek Philippe is synonymous with the highest quality and excellence in watchmaking craftsmanship, continuing the traditions and standards established by its founders.

I thought similarly for about 10 years, then someone showed me a disassembled Lange mechanism and a Vacheron... and I bought ... a Vacheron.
In Lange I really like 3 hz balance, but the colorful movements (a mixture of silver, yellow gold, pink jewels, and blued screws is too much for me), besides, I don't like the alpha style hands and Lange only has such in his watches, and the cases are not very different. .
Vacheron or Patek is complete, Lange has been in the industry too short, fell out of practice for 45 years of non-existence. Lange isn't at the same echelon , imo.
