Rick and Morty find themselves on a space train that's one big narrative device, filled with weird passengers telling increasingly ridiculous anthology stories.

The story train is how Dan Harmon writes episodes of Rick and Morty. It’s basically one of the most meta episodes of tv ever.
It’s how he writes in general
It's not just dan Harmon way of writing. The circle they show in the episode is how dan writes rick and morty. But more specifically it's the hero's journey a very old writing strategy. Dan him self has said he uses the hero's journey for his writing

I wish they had done this on episode 8 because I feel like this is a more spiritual successor to interdimensional cable than the vat of acid. Don't get me wrong vat of acid is probably my favorite episode of Rick and Morty I'm just saying since episode 8 has always been kind of an anthology episode I feel like this one just fits better
It ended in a similar way to how Community's finale panned out, with some extremely meta-commentary on the basic structure of the show, with the end reveal of a non-existent family's ironic existentialism in a loop inspired/fuelled by rampant capitalism.

Basically the writer was asking to themselves where should Rick & Morty be heading
And they made it an episode
"I want to see some more continuity"
This episode hit you like a train.

To summarize this whole episode:
It is an anthology of short stories, which is then made into a long story, that is turned out to be just a fabricated story, that didn't have any real impact to the story we apparently wanted to follow.
with it also making fun of the fans who got too invested in the story they wanted to follow like most toxic fandoms do eventually

I think this episode highlights dan harmons true power that no matter how much the corporate overlords or the audience demand continuity or whatever at the end of the day, whether we get what we want or not, we're gonna watch rick and morty like the bored consumers we all are. and thats why he can get away with doing whatever he wants with rick and morty
Meh, I think the fact it wasnt funny really shows the value of roiland and the networks that actually see the data for stories that most people actually like.
The virus part was added in the last few days before they had to release the episode. If you look closely the lip movements don't match completely, and the audio kinda gets a tad bit louder when Rick is talking about "nobody is out there shopping with this fucking virus".
Important to note the pandemic hit mid season. They had a large gap between episodes in the middle of the season so this was the first episode after that gap right after the start of the pandemic.
Now I really wanna know what he was supposed to say before the new line.

A lot of people hated this episode because some felt it pissed all over the fan theories(it honestly didn't)and the evil morty theory
If anything it paid tribute to them. Just because these ideas were thrown up as currently 'not in continuity', doesn't mean they couldn't (or some version of them) become part of continuity at a later time.
I think that was the whole point. To say "fuck your theories" and throw everything out the window.

It was about how fan theories are taking some ideas that could actually happen away from Dan Harmon because they don't wanna be predictable. When you make a fan theory and guess some stuff correctly, that was maybe actually what Dan Harmon was planning, it ruins it for him. Cause it's not canon anymore. But it could've been.
There’s a documentary called “6 days to air” that goes DEEP into the process of shooting, editing, and airing animation.
It’s about South Park, but I’m sure there are a lot of common threads between the two.

To me that implies all the fan theories floating about. So first episode of evil morty, there were the flashbacks to rick holding a toddler morty even though Rick took off before Summer was born in the original reality at the start of the show and didnt come back until a few months to a year before episode 1. So that lead to the fantheory that Evil Morty is Ricks original morty.. now, that makes total sense.
But because the writers didn't set that in stone and everyone has been trying to predict the flow of the show with fan theories, loads of ideas are being scraped.
If I come up with a theory and post it online, and then 3 years later it makes it into the show.. did the writers come up with it on their own? Did they plan it this way all along? Or did they "steal" my idea and now the news artcles are thigs like, "How a fan theory became cannon!"
So basically, everything in this episode regarding the battle being lead by Evil Morty and darth-butthole, summer and her friend light sabre fighting, Phoenix person fighting rick (after phoenix person was released) was in a fanmade Anime opening made long before this came out.. its pretty damn epic (there are 2 made by 2 different people, the most popular one isn't nearly as good as the other one) and this is the writers ways of saying "Shut up already, because the more you bitch and moan about how this should be a thing, or this needs to be a thing, the less likely we are to do that!"
This is pretty much what happened to Community. Dan Harmon (Guy who makes Rick and Morty as well) basically had his show highjacked by the network because he wanted to do it one way, and the network wanted to play fanservice to every single letter in a cash grab.. the result was 2 really shitty seasons not done by Harmon. Same could happen to Rick and Morty if too many people bitch about how the show needs to go back to how it was in season 1, with isolated episodes that don't have any continuity at all.

Back then, you did what you had to do, but it wasn't just about needin' someone-it was about wantin' to be close to someone who understood you better than anyone else. They say those bonds could last a lifetime, stronger than the love of any woman." Will, the youngest, looked at the two older men, a mixture of curiosity and something else in his eyes. "Maybe it's somethin' worth tryin'," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
As the night grew darker and the fire burned lower, the three men moved closer together, the weight of their conversation hanging in the air. They began to explore the intimacy they had spoken of, tentatively at first, then with growing confidence. As their bodies intertwined, the night was filled with sounds-wild, untamed noises that echoed the primal connection they were forging. In those moments, they discovered a new kind of bond, one that went beyond words and gestures, a bond that was as old as time itself. When the fire finally died down, they lay in silence, knowing that their friendship had been transformed in a way that only they could truly understand.

The beauty of it is that if they actually wanted to they could still incorporate some or all of that into the "main" show, since none of that actually happened to "our" Rick and Morty, and especially since it made it seem like they prooooobably won't, so no one would expect it haha

Continuity seems to be R&M's greatest strength AND weakness.
This is my second favourite episode in the series (behind The Ricks Must Be Crazy), but only because I'm a major fan of when a piece of media can do meta right, and for Rick and Morty I think this is exactly how meta they needed to go for a meta episode, and I think they nailed it.
The web site at the end takes you to adult swim where you can see the episodes that have aired to date.

Hello guys. Rick is talking about you😆. This is the craziest episode of the series. All those wonderful stories that are not cannon😩. I want a Story Train. Evil Morty has an army of Meeseeks, Ricks, Gazorpazorpians, and even an evil Mr Poopbuthole. But non of that is real.
As far as when the episodes are done Dan Harmon brought up on this years online Comic Con panel that Season 5 is written (he was starting Season 6 stuff) and they were editing the season finale before sending it to the animators.

They were making points and talking about people like you and people like me.you asking about them making a movie about the evil Morty scene at the end is basically what they were referring to all this episode. The continuity train ie, you asking for a continuation of certain storylines or characters from the past. They were basically telling fans to stop hoping to see certain people return or stories brought back. It might happen but then again it might not.
I think that's why this episode comes off like a big mastrubation effort by the "head" to many. They know they have created an incredibly fun and good X-files type program, they have random monster of the week episodes (that are awesome), and continuity laden episodes (also awesome), a few per season to tell some kind of greater story arc.
But this episode comes off like a temper tantrum against fan expectations cloaked in some greater "meta informed" exercise to show they are smarter than the fans who love their show and hope for cool things to happen.
I genuinely believe that the show leads don't have enough confidence in themselves to just run with it and are too stressed by fan expectations and the dump truck full of money hanging over their heads and this episode was some kind of stress relieving catharsis exercise.
I hope they work it out. I love the show, gotta say I was pissed they skipped doing commentary on the season 4 blu rays :(

It's just like people keep ranting about this short that was on twitter or something but was endorsed by the creators but wasn't made by them that gave an explanation to Rick and Morty but honestly this season tells me that isn't canon. Even though they say the same universe as Rick, the way realities would work would have many Ricks thinking they are the same reality code. Like the one from S1 that they swapped to once they died, the Rick would still think he was C137 because he was identical to him in every way except that point in time.

Its funny how you say that you want to see the big show down with evil morty as a film when the whole episode was saying a massive fuck you to all the fans who want/demand that the show go the direction that they want. The point of that scene was, here it is and we do not acknowledge it as cannon. We will show you the scene, but only so we don't have to actually make it a real thing further down the line. I admire the fact they want to keep complete creative control and they don't want to keep making what the fans/ executives want them to make. But on the other hand i like the episodes that follow continuity and i want to see more of evil morty, and i'd like to see bird person, squanchy, abradolph lincler return. So in a way it felt like a personal attack. It also made it perfectly clear that they don't want to make what i want to see, and considering i feel like this season was not just disappointing but just plain bad, mixed with them stating they want to go in a different direction to what i want to see, it just resulted in me not caring anymore. I personally hated this season and i think i'm done with the show for good. Because clearly the creators and myself has reached a crossroads.

the point of Morty's story is to show how stupid the bechdel test is. Since it technically passes but is as far from empowering women as you could get. This whole episode is a giant fuck you to everyone who tries to impose limitations on the show creators.
