There is actually some continuity here! The episode with Fart, at the end after Morty killed it and returned to Rick you could see Rick load the trunk with rocks and one of them had a small pink piece on it (which is what Rick referred to when he said that it could have gotten into the house through some fruit, underneath someones shoe or something)

    • @LJMiho
      @LJMiho 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

Yep, and in the very beginning of this episode you can actually see Rick throw away some of those same rocks in the trash and they still had one of those small pink things attached to them.
So it is quite clear who contaminated their house with the alien parasites.

Potential spoilers for anyone else reading.
The show's established canon, backed by the writers, states that we're always following C137 Rick and his Morty. The one exception was the Citadel (April Fools Atlantis joke), but even that episode started and ended with our Rick and Morty. If we ever do follow another Rick & Morty, it'll be another one-off episode and it will be made clear that they aren't the ones from our main reality. Thanks to a certain -heist- reference from a future episode, we can retroactively state that he's long time friends with Rick and it's through him that the family knows Mr PB. Seeing as how our Rick has also known him for years we can accurately infer a Mr PB has existed in every universe that C137 Rick and his Morty have lived in. Unfortunately, that includes universe c137 (their original universe wherein the earth got turned into messed up Cronenberg world) .
Also, aside from the Cronenberg episode, Rick and Morty have changed universes at least once that we know. Back in Morty's mind blowers, we learned that they had to flee the universe in order to escape the squirrels. Whether this place before or after season 3 episode 1 we don't know for sure, (it's implied to be before). Regardless, they currently reside in their 3rd universe which is identical to their replacement universe's timeline, which was in itself already a near-perfect replica of dimension C137 (pre-Cronenberg).

With regards to Rick's depression a lot of the most intelligent people tend to be that way. If they don't feel isolated because of it then usually they overanalyse to the point where they're acutely aware of the worst aspects of the world and life. Maybe that's why he "self-medicates" (drinks) so much.

I actually heard NPR talking about a social study where they asked highly intelligent people if they were happy or if they would prefer to be ignorant and unaware, and 100 percent said they would prefer not to be intelligent. The two main reason they gave were 1) exactly what you said, they were painfully aware of all the evils and flaws and corruption in our society. And 2) they hated having to deal with the rest of humanity (Stupid AF people). Even funnier they then asked a bunch of stupid people if they thought they would be happier if they were more aware of politics and economics and sciences. And most of them said they thought they would be happier if they had a higher intelligence. . . . .point is, we are all miserable and life is pain 😁😁😁 have a great day You tube!!

I absolutely love this episode. It's definitely in my top three of the series so far. The whole idea behind the memory parasites is kinda genious. The fact that they can only create pleasant memories makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint, because it would make it much more likely, that the host they're mooching off would trust them and be reluctant to exterminate them. It also makes sense, that as the infections spreads, the parasites take on increasingly outlandish forms, because they have to dig deeper and deeper into the subconcious of their victims to find new forms to take.
I especially love the scene between Jerry and Sleepy Gary. Notice, that this is the only memory that doesn't create a new parasite. Instead it is "Sleepy Gary" acting for his own self-preservation, by creating a deeper connection with one of the human hosts, to the point where even after Gary is revealed to be a parasite, the connection is strong enough to make Jerry lose his will to live.

The show does get darker. Just so you know at the end of each episode we get the claymation production sign (harmonious Claptrap) and from season one it is the creator and his wife. in the first season they are happily on the couch together... they eventually separate and divorce (season 3). Dan Harmon changed the claymation production sign to change with his mood and his life. until he is eventually just clearly giving up and just laying depressingly on the couch. it is unbelievably sad as we slowly see his emotional state as the seasons pass. we not only see it though the heavy nature of the show (love lost, nihilism, drudgery through existence, divorce, loss, death, and life) but we also see it through subtle things like that. Its not all sad as Dan has become a big activist for mental health. It really explains alot about the show and also is pretty heavy. people contest that it was a relationship that would never last but in the end it really is a dark life change so that might have been going through season 2 as we start to get some more interesting deepness.... on a lighter note, i love the fact you are going through the show. you are only scratching the surface!!.... sooooo much continuity and amazing shows ahead... sit back, take a few sips and enjoy the ride! (so happy you are enjoying the show so far).. also on a even more lighter note... the claymation production side did change for a third time, for season 4 :) no spoilers but i think you can guess why.

It's possible that MPBH is one of those "advanced" creatures that was praying on the parasites. Notice that in the opening intro, they worked MPBH into the intro, and he was the one that created the INITIAL flashback that allowed the other parasites to keep coming, after the first one that was the lead to the shows point.
Also, they said they never really plan anything out, so maybe they're just meta-retconning. :3

It's the fact that he is the smartest man in the universe and can travel between realities that makes him that way. He has no need for real personal attachment to his family because he knows there's limitless versions of his family out there and he can trade them in whenever he wants. While his unmatched intelligence isolates him by convincing him that his lack of need for personal attachment is a positive and a huge bonus in a multiverse, he is still fundamentally a human being who has to live and interact with people and therefore harbors the desire for attachment. That dichotomy/conundrum is at the heart of Rick's psychological situation. Because of the multiverse, he knows that individual lives have no grand meaning, which he intellectualizes into an "anything goes/nothing matters" philosophy that precludes one from ever being emotionally hurt. But by "returning" to his family, he is also coming to realize that there CAN be meaning to individual lives in a multiverse through relationships with others but engaging in those relationships means subjecting himself to the possibility (or inevitability) of being emotionally hurt. In other words, Rick is experiencing the great pain of loneliness and isolation because of how hard he is trying to avoid the great emotional pain that comes with forming relationships with and caring about other people.

With all the hopping between parallel dimensions going on in this series, it's possible that we're simply observing a parallel Smith family, who really _did_ have a "Mr. Poopy Butthole" living with them the entire time.
But here's the mind-blower: once you accept that as a possibility, what evidence do we have that we've *_ever_* seen the same Rick and/or Morty twice?
Sure, we've seen what _appears_ to be "continuity" between episodes - such as Morty pointing out his and Rick's graves from an earlier episode - but the very episode in which those graves were dug established that a multitude of Ricks and Mortys will have the same adventures, which is the reason why Rick could simply sift through the universes for ones that were entirely identical right up to and including the "Love Potion" disaster, then pick one of the universes where the local Rick managed to un-Cronenberg the world *_and_* happened to die right afterwards. Just because a Rick or Morty _appears_ to reference an earlier adventure, doesn't mean that they were the one we saw _having_ that adventure in the respective episode…
In other words, nothing is real; nothing can ever be certain; and anything you think you "know" about Rick or Morty can ever be assumed to be true of the Rick or Morty you are currently seeing on-screen. 🤯

I just realized, Jerry and sleepy Gary's flashback was the only one to not introduce a new character into the house, why? Was he actually in love with Jerry at that point and only wanted to escape with him before Beth shot him?

  • @JeffOf813

He knows he lives in a cartoon, he's not smart, he's just smart enough to know that he is in a show... Therefore he knows how to "invent" anything... He's afraid to die... Aka get canceled... This is an unconfirmed theory.

I really think Rick's just too intelligent.
180+ IQ is considered a disability as it almost universally lead to sever chronic depression.
I saw a documentary about a guy with some 200ish IQ and he was boarderline suicidal, had been for years and when they asked him why he responded:
“Have you ever been in a room full with 5 year olds?“
    The reporter said yes.
And he said "That's what I experience around regular people"
It's really hard for people like this to connect with others at any meaningful level, no one really 'gets them'. Could you imagine never having a meaningful or (to you) interesting conversation? Ever?
This makes them feel like outsiders and loneliness is a soul killer.
    [Edit]
I paused to make this comment *literally* a second before you went into it.
I elaborated a bit more so I'll leave the post up anyway.

A couple of my favorite lines in the series in this episode.
"Rick, I don't like glowing rocks in the kitchen trash."
"Well I don't like your unemployed genes in my grandchildren, Jerry, but life is made of little concessions."
"Dad, why does our house have blast shields?"
"Trust me, Beth, you don't want to know how many answers that question has."
