The largest island in the Portuguese Azores archipelago is São Miguel. It is well-known for the rich marine life, especially whales, and the landscape made of volcanic rocks. The capital, Ponta Delgada, is home to the 16th-century Fort of São Brás, the Gothic St. Sebastian Church, and the 18th-century City Gates. To the northwest are the green and blue Sete Cidades twin crater lakes. Furnas features hot springs and fumaroles to the east.
