I don’t know how he does it. Angus is a machine! I think the same thing of John Frusciante. He plays the snow song well he’s dancing around. I can’t even play it sitting down. It’s a rough one. Talented!
I think that the true magic of AC/DC is not only just their incredible riffs but the way they PUNCH you in the nose in every song with their use of chords, usually G, C and A. One of my all time favorite parts of any rock song is that G chord in You shook me all night long. As Brian sings " and You", the single G is struck and then the pause between "You...shook" when they strum down the rest of that G, man that is just the best! It's very simple yet SO effective!! Look at this riff, all those fast notes then suddenly Pow! Pow! Pow! they hit you with those held D, G and A chords, then fly back into the boogie part. So many of their songs use this technique and it works every single time!! Great Video Thom!

The catch is as you noted, the simplicity combined with Angus' special touch and technique, along with the emphasis and energy that only he can do, make it a whole package. There's a saying that goes something to the effect of: it's not what you have, it's how you use what you have.

Imo malcom was the heart of every acdc song. The gretsch with those heavy strings was the sound. Took me a few years to realize that malcolm's rhythm was what made me love acdc. Maybe that's why "gimme a bullet" is my favorite acdc song?

Angus was lucky that he had a hugely supportive mother, but he also had the inspiration of an older brother who was already famous as a member of The Easybeats. The high energy portion of ACDC comes from the frenetic style of the Easybeats. Angus would come home from Ashfield High School and start practicing constantly. Years of work went into his style, but growing up in a household of musicians must have helped. I was a young man in Sydney when the Easybeats were big and AC/DC was just starting. Great times. Here is a clip I love of The Easybeats in 1965 before they made it big. This was in a studio that used to exist near where I live. Within a couple of years of this clip Angus would be listening to them on the radio, and reading of their performances in Europe, and hearing stories of their wild life on tour. You were fortunate to be there at that time. Love the Easybeats. Friday is still a staple on classic rock stations in America. But Sorry is also a great song that doesn't get played enough. Wasn't George their manager after AC DC got started? Probably a key piece of their success having a trustworthy manager that also knows the ropes. Cheers.

Best version of this tracks the one on the "if you want blood" live album though. Tiny bit quicker, bon on top form that night. 1st tune in, just a load of crowd noise then "pow",, straight in your guts.

In an interview from about 10 years ago angus was asked how its like to be one of the best guitarists in the world angus laughed and simply said im not even the best in our band
Jugizet Mal makes it look easy, I mean it’s just simple chords, but just when you think you got it you have to start all over, he’s hard to duplicate. Personally I think it’s easier to pickup Angus’s licks than Mal’s rythym guitar

Nice musical historical note on the difference between the blues shuffle and the straight four. This was the birth of rock and roll and Chuck Berry was the pioneer. In his Johnny B Goode you can here the tension between the hired 50s studio band trying to play shuffle like they were used to, and Chuck Berry playing straight four over top, which arguably is what makes the song and throws off a lot of players trying to capture the groove. Love your channel.
Awesome insight! Thanks for sharing. I first saw AC/DC in concert in the 70s. High Voltage took the world by storm! Angus being carried around on someone’s shoulders was truly mesmerizing. After Sammy Hagar, Mother’s Finest and AC/DC my ears had a high pitched whistle for about 3 days! You had me up and playing this riff quickly!

They have a great sound and stuck to it. Fantastic band. I saw an interview with them and the interviewer asked Angus what he thought of the critics who say you guys have made 12 albums and they all sound the same. Angus said thats a bunch of rubbish.... we have made 14... classic.
I'm not a guitarist, but I am a lifelong AC/DC fan. Have seen heaps of riff breakdown or analysis videos on Angus, but never enjoyed as much I did this one. Great work mate, keep it up.

Great video man. I started learning about a year and a half ago and I’m trying to base my learning on the style of Angus Young and Chuck Berry. I love Angus because of his energy and blues and double stops and I just love sound man. And Chuck Berry is the real original King of Rock n Roll!
Unless there's a song-by-song breakdown of who came up with the riffs, I don't suppose we'll ever know. But Malcolm Young is generally considered the riff-master of most of AC/DC's catalog. Still, I have no doubts Angus was no slouch in the riff department as well. Be interesting to know who came up with what. And wasn't it Malcolm and Bon or Malcolm and Brian who worked up most of their song's lyrics? Well, what ever the case, great band that's made some of Rock music's all-time great tunes.
@@GuitarPilgrim, that's the thing. Unless Angus, since Malcolm's gone, were to go song by song and say who came up with what, why, I don't think we'll ever know. Bottom line, of course, is the band as a whole recorded some great music.
LOVE your vids, so interesting.. but I must clarify.. that even the recording has a lot going on.. Angus does in fact lead the riff after the 3 - A chords with the first single note "A" actually being played with an upstroke on the 2nd fret G- string. Many assumed that Angus starts this riff with the open "a" ... the mix is difficult to pick up but a clean video of Angus playing this song with Guns and Roses outside in the sunshine shows it clearly. I might assume Malcolm would change it from Angus and play the open A string to start as their parts were often subtly different. Just some interesting details.. Once again.. LOVE your vids.. loads of fun..

I can pick up pretty much anything by ear in a few minutes, so I really like how it didn't take you 20 or 30 minutes of annoying yammering to teach the riff (and also liked adding a few performance clips to help illustrate). Great job!

Helldacious video !!!!! This is my favorite group of any genre, of course Angus is my favorite guitarist. AC/DC helped us through VietNam with the best guys I will know, then and now. AC/DC will always rock.

That just sounds way off on a strat. It really misses that straight punch in the face a decent humbucker delivers. Also, the G chord has no minor or major third in it making it more suitable for distorted open chords and to Angus his solo's which brilliantly move from major to minor to dorian or mixolydian. In fact most chords they play miss that third it's just more obvious on the G because it mutes the A string.
Angus thought me how to play. I was 13 at a concert. Long story short i will like to enjoy playing again. By the way the angus brother wes very cool to me. I miss him 😭. They thought me some riffs..

Yes, you are right. You can play the notes and the chords but with AC/DC's music it's that "feel" thing. (And Bon Scott's lyrics were fantastic!).

Great video man. I started learning about a year and a half ago and I’m trying to base my learning on the style of Angus Young and Chuck Berry. I love Angus because of his energy and blues and double stops and I just love sound man. And Chuck Berry is the real original King of Rock n Roll!

Unless there's a song-by-song breakdown of who came up with the riffs, I don't suppose we'll ever know. But Malcolm Young is generally considered the riff-master of most of AC/DC's catalog. Still, I have no doubts Angus was no slouch in the riff department as well. Be interesting to know who came up with what. And wasn't it Malcolm and Bon or Malcolm and Brian who worked up most of their song's lyrics? Well, what ever the case, great band that's made some of Rock music's all-time great tunes.
I just automatically assumed it would be Angus who wrote the riff but many people seem to think it was Malcolm, is there any way to know for sure?
@@GuitarPilgrim, that's the thing. Unless Angus, since Malcolm's gone, were to go song by song and say who came up with what, why, I don't think we'll ever know. Bottom line, of course, is the band as a whole recorded some great music.
Malcolm, in all the interviews over the years, gets the credit for the structure, if you will, of the band.
Really enjoying your videos as for a beginner like me I find them easy to understand when you break them down can’t wait to pick up the SG.
LOVE your vids, so interesting.. but I must clarify.. that even the recording has a lot going on.. Angus does in fact lead the riff after the 3 - A chords with the first single note "A" actually being played with an upstroke on the 2nd fret G- string. Many assumed that Angus starts this riff with the open "a" ... the mix is difficult to pick up but a clean video of Angus playing this song with Guns and Roses outside in the sunshine shows it clearly. I might assume Malcolm would change it from Angus and play the open A string to start as their parts were often subtly different. Just some interesting details.. Once again.. LOVE your vids.. loads of fun..

I can pick up pretty much anything by ear in a few minutes, so I really like how it didn't take you 20 or 30 minutes of annoying yammering to teach the riff (and also liked adding a few performance clips to help illustrate). Great job!

Angus is my guitar hero. Pretty sure Billy Gibbons 1973 album had a big impact on him. Both are amazing blues rock guitarists.
The thing that always amazed me about how hard and heavy AC/DC sounds is that they are mostly using open chords.

Angus was definitely one the best at “communicating” but Ted Nugent was right there with him.
Angus is my hero, AC/DC is my favorite band, but, I have to say, Ted is a better guitar player, very underrated
First time I seen AC/DC was in 1976 in a small country town

That just sounds way off on a strat. It really misses that straight punch in the face a decent humbucker delivers. Also, the G chord has no minor or major third in it making it more suitable for distorted open chords and to Angus his solo's which brilliantly move from major to minor to dorian or mixolydian. In fact most chords they play miss that third it's just more obvious on the G because it mutes the A string.
People argue about Bon Brian and Axl but Angus is the show. Favorite band since the first time I heard them in 1977. 🎸❤
